Chelsea Transfer News: Double Summer Swoop Tipped in Deadline Day Rumours

Rob BlanchetteFeb 2, 2015

Chelsea are preparing themselves for a big summer push to sign Real Madrid starlet Raphael Varane as Gary Cahill's replacement at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are also being linked with Brazilian teenager Malcom from South American club Corinthians.

Neil Ashton of the Mail Online says England international Cahill has fallen out favour with manager Jose Mourinho and has lost his place in the starting XI to Kurt Zouma.

Much of Chelsea's success this season has been built on the John Terry/Cahill axis, but it seems the Special One is looking towards his former club for a long-term solution in defence.

Varane has found it difficult to start games for Madrid in recent times, and a move to Chelsea to be reunited with his former Madrid coach at a major European power could appeal to him.

Ashton says Mourinho is "constantly monitoring" the 21-year-old French international at Los Blancos, and desperately wants to purchase the centre-back.

Varane has started just eight La Liga games for the Galacticos this term, per WhoScored.com, and life on the Bernabeu bench could easily stunt the player's growth.

Mourinho has seen the youthful exuberance of Thibaut Courtois thrive at Stamford Bridge this season, and although the Portuguese manager does not have a great track record with younger players, Varane surely has the class to feature for Chelsea.

But Madrid assistant coach Paul Clement says Varane will be going nowhere, as reported by Amar Singh and Ashish Sharma of the London Evening Standard.

They quote manager Carlo Ancelotti's No. 2 reaffirming Los Blancos' faith in Varane, whether he is in the starting XI or not: "He plays, he doesn't play. Big clubs are looking at him. The club really see him as the future. He's 21 years old and a fantastic central defender. That’s the nature of this game and at a big club like this with such talented players."

In other transfer news, Chelsea are tracking 17-year-old wonderkid Malcom, who has recently broken into Corinthians' first team setup.

The Guardian's Ed Aarons says he has been informed Mourinho is trying to seal a deal for the Brazil under-20 international, with Barcelona willing to challenge Chelsea for his signature:

In December, John Cross of the Daily Mirror reported the Blues' interest in the striker, saying the player "is seen as the country’s next big prospect," and "Europe’s top clubs are now circling" to capture him.

Varane is certainly one of the most talented centre-backs plying his trade in Europe, and it is a shame he is rooted to the Real Madrid bench.

He would thrive under Mourinho's wing in England, and Ancelotti will not be able to hold the Frenchman back for much longer.

Cahill is a solid player, but his depth of quality is questionable. He is your typical English centre-back who relies on power, but he also possess good feet and technique.

But he is not in Varane's class, even with the Madrid player still being so young. Varane will grow into a world-class entity, and if Mourinho gets the chance to replace Cahill with him, he certainly will.
