LSU Football Recruiting: Predicting All the Recruits Who Will Sign on NSD
LSU head coach Les Miles will bring in another top-10 recruiting class in 2015. But if some things fall positively for Miles, the Tigers could find themselves in the top five after national signing day on Wednesday.
The Tigers currently rank No. 8 in the 247Sports composite team rankings, which is good enough for fourth in the SEC. Their 19 commitments makes them the only school in the top 10 with less than 20.
Miles will have four early enrollees from the 2015 class competing in spring practice. He also has a signed letter of intent from junior college transfer safety Jeremy Cutrer.
National signing day is always a frenetic 24 hours for coaches. Hard verbal commitments could switch to another school at any time. Miles and his staff hope the 14 unsigned players in the 2015 class keep their promises.
LSU is always known for finishing strong. The Tigers have a long history of flipping players committed to other universities late in the recruiting cycle.
Here is preview of where some of the prospects might land.
Quarterback
1 of 7LSU fans are praying for answers at quarterback. Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris will both return next season, but their performances in 2014 left plenty to be desired.
The Tigers will have 3-star quarterback Justin McMillan competing in spring practice as an early enrollee. McMillan put up impressive numbers through the air and on the ground in Cedar Hill, Texas, but to expect him to challenge for playing time as a true freshman is a stretch.
The biggest hope for the Tigers is 4-star athlete Torrance Gibson to flip from Ohio State. Gibson played quarterback in high school, but some expect him to play receiver in college. Either way, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron will at least look at Gibson under center if he signs with LSU.
Cameron visited Gibson in Florida this past Thursday only days after the recruit officially visited Baton Rouge, per Hunter Paniagua of Tiger Sports Digest. This should increase the Tigers' chances of landing him, especially considering Ohio State's abundance of talent at quarterback.
Running Back/Fullback
2 of 7For the second straight season, LSU looks to have arguably the best backfield recruiting haul in the country.
The Tigers currently have commitments from Baton Rouge prep stars Derrius Guice and Nick Brossette. Guice and Brossette will team up with class of 2014 workhorses Leonard Fournette and Darrel Williams.
The LSU coaches will have to wait nervously until national signing day. Guice seems to be firm in his commitment. While Brossette has been recruited heavily by Texas, Shea Dixon of Geaux247 reports he is going to keep his promise to the Tigers.
LSU also has the No. 1 fullback prospect in the country, David Ducre, as an early enrollee this spring. He could challenge for a starting role after LSU dismissed projected starter Melvin Jones from the program this offseason.
Wide Receiver/Tight End
3 of 7LSU, for the second straight season, is bringing in an elite 5-star receiver from New Orleans.
Tyron Johnson will be following in the footsteps of Malachi Dupre of the 2014 class, who made an immediate impact with the Tigers as a true freshman. Johnson will look to do the same next year.
Johnson finished as the No. 1-rated prospect in Louisiana, and for good reason. He does not have blazing speed, but his soft hands and wide array of moves will make him a threat for SEC defenses.
LSU also has commitments from 4-star prospect Jazz Ferguson and 3-star athlete Lanard Fournette, who is the younger brother of LSU star running back Leonard. Ferguson is the more likely of the two to see the field.
The Tigers might not be done with receivers, though. Two Louisiana pass-catchers in Derek Dillon and Daylon Charlot are still on LSU's radar. Dillon, a Florida commitment, and Charlot are both projected not to sign with the Tigers.
The Tigers' 2015 class of tight ends features 3-stars Hanner Shipley and Bry'Keithon Mouton. Shipley is an early enrollee, but expect Mouton to be the better receiving threat.
Offensive Line
4 of 7LSU's offensive line haul for the 2015 class has been nothing short of spectacular.
The Tigers got a massive commitment from 6'6'', 305-pound offensive tackle Chidi Valentine-Okeke last week. Valentine-Okeke added to coup that included a pair of 3-star commitments in George Brown Jr. and Adrian Magee.
LSU's depth at guard also got a boost when Maea Teuhema committed to the Tigers on national signing day of last year. Teuhema will be joining his brother, 2014 defensive end Sione, next season.
LSU might not be done just yet. Offensive tackle Toby Weathersby, a 4-star recruit, made an official visit to Baton Rouge in mid-January. The former Texas commit is also looking at Arkansas and Ole Miss.
Even without Weathersby, second-year offensive line coach Jeff Grimes should be ecstatic with the talent he has coming in.
Defensive Line
5 of 7
LSU's defensive line coup for the 2015 class could be the worst in the Miles era. As of now, the Tigers only have a commitment from 3-star Isaiah Washington.
New defensive line coach Ed Orgeron, who is known for his legendary recruiting prowess, is looking to change that.
Orgeron has been in hot pursuit of 5-star defensive end CeCe Jefferson. His multiple visits to see Jefferson gave the Tigers extra momentum for his official visit to Baton Rouge this past weekend.
LSU is also recruiting 4-star defensive ends Arden Key and Prince Tega Wanogho Jr. With the departure of starters Jermauria Rasco and Danielle Hunter, depth at defensive end is at a premium.
All signs are pointing to LSU not getting any defensive tackles this recruiting cycle. It is never great to be blanked at any position, but the Tigers do return every player who got meaningful snaps at defensive tackle from last season.
Linebacker
6 of 7The Tigers currently have no linebacker commitments, but they got some great news when 4-star prospect Leo Lewis decommitted from Ole Miss last week.
247Sports' Steve Wiltfong reports Mississippi State is now the leader for Lewis' services. LSU, though, is at least in the running.
The 6'3'', 235-pound Lewis is the No. 1 inside linebacker prospect in the country for good reason. His size and speed would immediately boost the depth of the unit.
The Tigers return starters Kendell Beckwith and Lamar Louis. Duke Riley, Clifton Garrett and Debo Jones are other players who are expected to contribute. So missing out on Lewis would not be devastating. Nevertheless, the Tigers could miss out on a player who could play right away.
Secondary
7 of 7LSU will be bringing in one of its most talented defensive back classes ever, and that is saying something considering Baton Rouge is home of "Defensive Back University."
Kevin Toliver II is an early enrollee who is looking to crack the starting lineup this spring. The 5-star cornerback is a physical player who would jam opposite receivers relentlessly. He will, at the very least, be a special teams star who will eventually work his way on the field.
LSU also has commitments from Donte Jackson and Xavier Lewis, both of whom have the talent to be instant contributors next season. Jackson and Lewis, as South Louisiana natives, have a small chance of flipping elsewhere on national signing day.
With the addition of JUCO 4-star safety Cutrer, defensive backs coach Corey Raymond will get to coach an elite group of young players next season.
