National Signing Day 2015: 5-Star College Football Recruit Tracker
National signing day is upon us, as lengthy speculation about America's premier football prospects comes to an end. Years of talent evaluation, campus visits and big-game performances finally pay off Feb. 4, when these elite athletes finalize collegiate choices.
While many 5-star recruits committed during the early stages of this cycle, several remain undecided all the way down to the wire. Here's a look at where every 5-star player will end up next season.
Prospect order and ratings based on 247Sports' composite rankings.
35. LB Osa Masina
1 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 3 outside linebacker
High School: Brighton (Salt Lake City, Utah)
Size: 6'3.5", 230 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Osa Masina offers versatility as a rangy perimeter defender who can also provide a consistent pass-rushing threat off the edge. He tallied career highs as a senior with 97 tackles and 10 sacks, according to MaxPreps.
Masina also starred as a ball-carrier at Brighton, racking up 2,239 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns as an upperclassman.
Where He Signed: USC
It came down to a trio of Pac-12 options for Masina, who chose the Trojans over Arizona State and UCLA on Jan. 23. He kick-started what is expected to be a strong closing recruiting stretch at USC.
"The most important thing I took from my official visit to USC was how I felt around the players, recruits and coaching staff," he told Scott Schrader of 247Sports. "I also will have an opportunity for some early playing time, and that is something else that was important to me."
34. LB Justin Hilliard
2 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 2 outside linebacker
High School: St. Xavier (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Size: 6'0", 225 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Justin Hilliard may lack ideal length, but he's an every-down linebacker who doesn't back down. His aggressiveness shines, and his advanced strength allows him to bowl through blockers in pursuit of the ball.
He earned first-team All-American honors from USA Today in 2014 after tallying 107 tackles and eight sacks, per the Telegraph-Forum (Bucyrus, Ohio).
Where He Signed: Ohio State
Hilliard helped set the tone for another impressive Ohio State class in early July. He committed to the Buckeyes within minutes of 4-star Minnesota defensive end Jashon Cornell doing the same.
Iowa was the only other team to host Hilliard for an official visit. His older brother plays for the Hawkeyes.
"Ohio State is just the right fit from every standpoint," he told me last summer. "I'm ready to get to work for Coach [Urban] Meyer."
33. QB Kyler Murray
3 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 dual-threat quarterback
High School: Allen (Allen, Texas)
Size: 5'10", 180 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Kyler Murray solidified his spot among high school legends in the Lone Star State, winning all 42 games he started at Allen en route to three Texas titles. His athleticism and mental fortitude shined throughout, highlighted by a pair of double-digit-deficit comebacks during the 2014 playoffs.
Murray's statistics speak for themselves, as he amassed 10,000 passing yards, 4,000 rushing yards and 186 touchdowns in three seasons. He was named the 2014 Gatorade National Player of the Year and could potentially be selected in the first round of Major League Baseball's upcoming draft as a highly regarded middle infielder.
Where He Signed: Texas A&M
His verbal commitment to the Aggies appeared to be on the brink of vanishing during the final week leading up to national signing day. Murray visited Texas, and rumors circulated he was ready to become a Longhorn.
He quelled the fears of Texas A&M fans across the country on Jan. 29, posting a tweet that simply stated, "Following my heart... #GigEm." His father, Kevin Murray, was a star Aggies quarterback during the mid-1980s.
32. RB Soso Jamabo
4 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 2 running back
High School: Plano West (Plano, Texas)
Size: 6'2.5", 210 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Soso Jamabo brings a blend of skills to the backfield that enables offenses to exploit opponents by air or on the ground. He displayed excellent receiving technique last summer at The Opening and has flashed those soft hands for Plano West, hauling in 51 passes for 959 yards and seven touchdowns since 2012.
Of course, Jamabo does his best work off handoffs. He rushed for a career-best 2,279 yards and 44 scores as a senior.
Where He Signed: UCLA
Texas and UCLA were the front-runners for his services down the final stretch, despite persistent flirtations with Notre Dame and Texas A&M. Jamabo has an established relationship with Longhorns quarterback commit Matthew Merrick, but the allure of joining top-rated passer Josh Rosen and fellow Texas prospect Ryan Newsome in a young, revitalized Bruins offense was too enticing to ignore.
He could see time at running back and wide receiver in Los Angeles.
31. RB Damien Harris
5 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 running back
High School: Madison Southern (Berea, Kentucky)
Size: 5'11", 205 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Despite seeing action in just seven games due to injury, Damien Harris rumbled for 1,576 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior. He averaged an astounding 16.2 yards per carry during his final campaign at Madison Southern.
Harris isn't the extremely rare talent that top 2014 running back Leonard Fournette was last cycle, but exceptional downfield vision and anticipation push him atop this pack of rushers. He finished his high school career with 6,717 yards and 111 touchdowns.
Where He Signed: Alabama
Kentucky fought valiantly to keep its top in-state target on home turf, but the Wildcats will instead deal with Harris as a conference rival. Despite strong efforts from Mark Stoops and his staff—including a helicopter trip to one of the coveted recruit's games—he becomes the latest in a long line of heralded Alabama running back prospects.
"At the end of the day, I just got a feeling that Alabama was the best fit for me to develop academically, physically and as an athlete," Harris said during his commitment announcement, per Drew Champlin of AL.com. "The feeling stuck with me for a while."
30. DB Minkah Fitzpatrick
6 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 5 cornerback
High School: St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, New Jersey)
Size: 6'1", 198 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Minkah Fitzpatrick doubled as a shutdown defensive back and top receiving target in 2014 throughout St. Peter's run to a state title. He averaged 28 yards per catch and snared six touchdown passes from Notre Dame-bound quarterback Brandon Wimbush, per MaxPreps, while setting career highs in tackles (66) and interceptions (three).
His strength and ability to aid run defense make him a candidate to transition into a safety role depending on team roster needs.
Where He Signed: Alabama
Fitzpatrick committed to the Crimson Tide in April while attending spring game festivities in Tuscaloosa. Nick Saban appears primed to pry away one of the Northeast's top talents despite strong pursuit from Florida State.
The Seminoles hosted Fitzpatrick on campus in October and recently sent several members of the staff to visit him. Still, he resisted the temptation for a career in Crimson.
"It's a great opportunity to go down there and play for a prestigious program and great coaches and it's a blessing," Fitzpatrick told Duane Rankin of the Montgomery Adviser. "I appreciate it and I'm going to do the most I can with the opportunity."
Saban identified him as one of the elite prospects in the 2015 cycle early in the process, and his diligence in recruiting the New Jersey native paid off.
29. DT Daron Payne
7 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 7 defensive tackle
High School: Shades Valley (Birmingham, Alabama)
Size: 6'2", 325 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Daron Payne has the makings of a dominant 0-technique tackle at the next level. Taking on double-teams with ferocity and clearing space for linebackers to clean up plays is a strong suit.
He overpowers opponents in one-on-one settings and should become more of a penetrative presence as his footwork sharpens.
Where He Signed: Alabama
Alabama and Auburn battled it out for this top in-state talent, as he spent significant time visiting and communicating with both coaching staffs. He ultimately chose the Crimson Tide over the Tigers—and fellow finalist Mississippi State—at the Under Armour All-America Game.
28. ATH Terry Godwin
8 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 athlete
High School: Callaway High School (Hogansville, Georgia)
Size: 6'0", 168 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Terry Godwin is considered the top-rated athlete for a reason. He's smooth on both sides of the ball, exhibiting elite hip fluidity and impressive burst at defensive back and wide receiver.
Godwin warranted first-team USA Today All-American honors at cornerback, though he's expected to immediately contribute on offense at the next level. He could certainly be a rare two-way playmaker in college.
Where He Signed: Georgia
The Bulldogs landed a pledge from Godwin during his junior year, but that didn't slow down his recruitment. He invited interest from other programs and wasn't shy about it, visiting Alabama and Auburn.
"I'm open to all possibilities," Godwin told me before his senior season.
Some anticipated Auburn was in position to secure a last-second flip, but instead he heads to Athens.
27. WR Tyron Johnson
9 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 5 wide receiver
High School: Warren Easton (New Orleans, Louisiana)
Size: 6'1", 191 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Tyron Johnson's first crack at collegiate stardom could come as a kick returner, as he took four back to the house as a senior. He's a smooth route-runner who led his team to the state title game in 2014, catching 94 passes for 1,589 yards and 17 touchdowns on the season.
His success as an upperclassman—181 receptions for 3,022 yards and 34 scores—sets the stage for instant opportunities to insert himself in an SEC receiving rotation.
Where He Signed: LSU
The Tigers weren't always the favorite for Johnson, but LSU remained in the mix throughout. Despite heavily considering Texas Tech, Auburn, Georgia and Texas Tech, he committed to Les Miles at the Under Armour All-America Game.
26. OL Chuma Edoga
10 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 offensive guard
High School: McEachern (Powder Springs, Georgia)
Size: 6'3", 280 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Chuma Edoga is still in need of significant strength development, but he's already steamrolling defensive linemen as a nasty downhill run-blocker. His athleticism shines when he's tasked with pull duties, and he quickly builds momentum to warrant consideration as the most explosive offensive lineman on this list.
Versatility allows him to compete at guard or tackle on a talented, young USC front line.
Where He Signed: USC
The Trojans landed a cross-country commitment from the big fella last spring. He chose USC over Georgia, though he did spend an official visit with the Bulldogs during his senior season.
Steve Sarkisian and company managed to keep tight grips on Edoga until he enrolled early.
25. WR Christian Kirk
11 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 4 wide receiver
High School: Saguaro (Scottsdale, Arizona)
Size: 5'10", 191 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
If it weren't for some measurable deficiencies, Christian Kirk could very well top this class' crop of receivers. A lack of ideal height didn't hurt him in high school, as he led Saguaro to consecutive state titles as an upperclassman.
His stat line was simply sensational during that span. Kirk racked up 126 receptions for 2,370 yards, rushed for 2,522 yards and scored 79 total touchdowns. He's an immediate jack-of-all-trades threat in college.
"I just want an offensive coordinator who is open to me playing every wide receiver position on the field," Kirk told me this summer.
Where He Signed: Texas A&M
Kirk spurned Pac-12 contenders UCLA and Arizona State, along with Auburn, when he elected to join the Aggies after his senior season. He enrolled early and will be joined on campus by friend and 5-star quarterback Kyler Murray.
The future Texas A&M duo teamed up at The Opening last summer and made a lot of noise together.
24. DT Christian Wilkins
12 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 6 defensive tackle
High School: Suffield Academy (Suffield, Connecticut)
Size: 6'4", 290 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Extremely athletic for a young man of his physical stature, Christian Wilkins overcame some of the negative stigma that comes with his in-state high school competition by using camps as a proving ground. He came up big against elite offensive linemen from across the country during All-American practice sessions and looks like a player who could shine in any region.
Wilkins tallied 71 tackles, including 22 for loss, and eight sacks as a senior, per TigerNet.com.
Where He Signed: Clemson
Many considered Wilkins a lean to remain north at Notre Dame, Penn State or Ohio State. However, he provided a mild surprise by picking the Tigers during an early January announcement ceremony.
23. DT Rasheem Green
13 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 5 defensive tackle
High School: Junipero Serra (Gardena, California)
Size: 6'5", 275 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Rasheem Green is a scheme-diverse defender who ultimately projects as a top-tier 3-technique. He can slide outside given his pass-rushing prowess and spent plenty of time lined up along the edge in high school.
His upperclassman campaigns included 103 tackles, including 47 for loss, and 20 sacks.
Where He Signed: USC
He and high school teammate John Houston, a 4-star outside linebacker, become a proverbial "package deal" for the Trojans. Green also weighed offers from Miami, Oregon and Arizona State, but he'll follow in the footsteps of former Junipero Serra standouts Adoree' Jackson, Robert Woods and Marqise Lee by staying home.
22. OL Mitch Hyatt
14 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 2 offensive tackle
High School: North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Georgia)
Size: 6'5", 272 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Mitch Hyatt is one of just a few offensive tackles in this class who carry plug-and-play potential in 2015. He graded out as my top pass protector at the position, due in large part to rapid foot movement and a sturdy frame.
Where He Signed: Clemson
Hyatt made last signing day extra special for Clemson by committing to the Tigers. A year later, he's already enrolled on campus and preparing to push for immediate playing time.
21. QB Blake Barnett
15 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 2 pro-style quarterback
High School: Santiago (Corona, California)
Size: 6'4.5", 200 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Underestimate Blake Barnett's dual-threat capabilities at your own risk. He flashes incredible athleticism at his height and can pick up yards in a hurry with long strides, resulting in 1,174 rushing yards as an upperclassman.
"Coach [Lane] Kiffin and Coach [Nick] Saban were very fond about the idea of their quarterback being able to run the ball several times in each game," Barnett told me last summer. "It's something they were looking for and it made sense as a fit for me."
Though Barnett wasn't surrounded by the star-studded lineups some of his California quarterback contemporaries enjoyed this season, he still threw for a career-high 3,392 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Where He Signed: Alabama
Barnett initially committed to Notre Dame during his junior year, but he backed off that verbal pact last spring. After following up the decision with a visit to Oregon, most had him pegged as an eventual Ducks pledge.
Instead, Barnett bought in to what Saban and Kiffin can offer at Alabama. He served as a leader of this Crimson Tide class, enrolled early and has an outside shot to earn reps as a true freshman.
20. DB Kendall Sheffield
16 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 4 cornerback
High School: Fort Bend Marshall (Missouri City, Texas)
Size: 6'0", 181 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
The Lone Star State speedster brings top-end acceleration to the defensive secondary, and Kendall Sheffield isn't afraid to mix things up in run support either. USA Today named him a first-team All-American after he totaled 39 tackles, two interceptions and three blocked field goals.
Where He Signed: Alabama
Despite aggressive recruitments from in-state coaching staffs at Texas and Texas A&M, Sheffield chose the Crimson Tide while competing at the Under Armour All-America Game. He followed up that decision with an official visit to Tuscaloosa.
19. WR Deon Cain
17 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 3 wide receiver
High School: Tampa Bay Tech (Tampa, Florida)
Size: 6'1.5", 194 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Much like top 2014 wide receiver Speedy Noil (Texas A&M), Deon Cain spent the majority of high school snaps at quarterback. Regularly the best athlete on the field in a hotbed recruiting area, he torched opponents for 1,892 rushing yards and 24 total touchdowns in 2014, per MaxPreps.
His stock rose at receiver after powerful seven-on-seven performances during the summer. He validated the hype for his transition by catching and throwing touchdowns in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
"It's big because I'm showing what I can do at receiver in pads instead of just shorts and a T-shirt," Cain told me. "Even though I didn't play the position for my high school team, I can become the guy at Clemson and be one of the nation's best receivers."
Where He Signed: Clemson
Cain committed to Clemson in May and stayed on track to join a program that has produced several standout NFL receivers under Dabo Swinney. Visits to Auburn, LSU and Miami didn't change his mind.
18. WR George Campbell
18 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 2 wide receiver
High School: East Lake (Tarpon Springs, Florida)
Size: 6'3", 184 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
George Campbell is a true freak athlete, consistently clocking an absurd sub-4.4 in the 40-yard dash at his size. Length and quickness combine to create a dynamic downfield playmaker who is still learning the nuances of receiver.
He exhibited improvements in technique as a senior, and those efforts netted big results. Campbell posted career highs with 62 catches for 880 yards and 12 touchdowns, per MaxPreps.
Where He Signed: Florida State
Campbell is already on campus as an early enrollee, adding to an impressive stockpile of young Seminoles pass targets. He committed to Michigan in 2013 but ultimately became one of several star players to decommit during Brady Hoke's final year with the Wolverines.
17. DE Keisean Lucier-South
19 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 2 weak-side defensive end
High School: Orange Lutheran (Orange, California)
Size: 6'4", 208 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Keisean Lucier-South continues to make strides as an all-around defender, already coming a long way from the lanky speed-rusher we scouted in 2013. He's still working to establish himself as a player who can consistently establish the edge against rushing efforts, but developing technique and an expanded physical frame help.
Lucier-South secured 85 tackles, including 18 for loss, and 17 sacks as an upperclassman, per MaxPreps.
Where He Signed: UCLA
UCLA was the first FBS program to extend an offer in early 2013, and it ultimately paid off with a big-time Bruins commitment. He spent official visits at Oregon, Oklahoma and Michigan before announcing his decision.
"They've been recruiting me for two years now, and we've built a relationship that I'm comfortable with," Lucier-South told me. "I'm excited to be a Bruin."
16. DE Canton Kaumatule
20 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 3 strong-side defensive end
High School: Punahou (Honolulu, Hawaii)
Size: 6'7", 290 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Take a moment to scroll up and reread those physical measurements. Canton Kaumatule is a massive force along the defensive front who dominated during Under Armour All-America training sessions, proving he's ready to produce in the Pac-12.
His raw strength and ridiculous wingspan challenge offensive tackles to seal outside gaps against him. However, he'll have a hard time topping the accomplishments of fellow Punahou graduate Barack Obama.
Where He Signed: Oregon
Kaumatule has an older brother who plays at Stanford, so many expected the Cardinal to play a factor in his recruitment. However, he visited Oregon in late October and committed while on campus, and he recently arrived in Eugene as an early enrollee.
15. CB Tarvarus McFadden
21 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 3 cornerback
High School: American Heritage (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)
Size: 6'2", 198 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Tarvarus McFadden anchored the back end of an American Heritage defense that helped claim consecutive state titles in 2013 and 2014. Built more like a lanky linebacker, he flashes top-end speed, while his length and height are indicative of a position trending toward larger players these days.
McFadden cemented his status as an elite ball hawk in 2014, tallying career highs in tackles (40) and interceptions (five).
Where He Signed: Florida State
This was a fluid recruitment throughout much of the process, leading to a Halloween commitment announcement. McFadden chose the Seminoles over fellow finalists LSU and Georgia.
Jimbo Fisher and his staff maintained and strengthened this relationship, ensuring he ended up in garnet and gold.
14. DT Daylon Mack
22 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 4 defensive tackle
High School: Gladewater (Gladewater, Texas)
Size: 6'0", 330 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Though short in stature, Daylon Mack looked like a man among boys against competition in Texas and beyond. He was named defensive MVP of the Under Armour All-America Game, displaying a penetrative style of play that commands constant double-team blocking schemes inside.
Mack mauled opponents during the past three seasons, securing 241 tackles—89 for loss—and 17 sacks.
Where He Signed: Texas A&M
The longtime Aggies commit abruptly decommitted from Texas A&M in December and followed that announcement by naming two favorites—LSU and TCU. That outlook changed when Tigers defensive coordinator John Chavis arrived in College Station, putting the Aggies back in top consideration.
Texas A&M battled with TCU and Texas for his commitment, ultimately winning him over again.
13. DT Terry Beckner Jr.
23 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 3 defensive tackle
High School: East St. Louis (East St. Louis, Illinois)
Size: 6'4", 293 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Terry Beckner Jr. has been billed as a prospect who can make an impact across the defensive front. He was previously scouted as a top strong-side defensive end and now sits near the top of the tackle rankings.
He was undoubtedly among the top five performers last summer at The Opening among linemen on either side of the ball. A first-team All-American selection by USA Today, Beckner bullied his way to 235 tackles as an upperclassman.
Where He Signed: Missouri
This was one of the toughest recruitments to get a read on at late stages. Official visits to Ohio State, Auburn and Florida State threatened the nearby Tigers, but he ultimately made a heartfelt commitment to Missouri on national television.
12. QB Josh Rosen
24 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 pro-style quarterback
High School: St. John Bosco (Bellflower, California)
Size: 6'4", 205 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Josh Rosen is the latest golden-haired, golden-armed quarterback to emerge in Southern California. He led St. John Bosco to an unbeaten season and state title in 2013 and warranted several scholarships as an underclassman.
Rosen threw for 8,473 yards and 90 touchdowns during three seasons as a high school starter. From a fundamental and physical standpoint, he's the most complete quarterback in this class.
Where He Signed: UCLA
The Bruins bagged a commitment from Rosen last spring shortly after he took a high-profile campus visit to Michigan. He enrolled early at UCLA and could quickly become the cornerstone of Jim Mora's program.
"I'd love to take snaps on opening day," he told me. "I'm going to work as hard as I can to make that happen."
11. WR Calvin Ridley
25 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 wide receiver
High School: Monarch (Pompano Beach, Florida)
Size: 6'0", 170 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
First things first: Calvin Ridley arrives at the college level at 20 years old. He was limited to just three games as a senior due to Florida's high school athletics age restrictions (19 years, nine months), but he managed to make a statement with 18 receptions for 420 yards and six touchdowns.
He was clearly a cut above other elite pass-catchers last summer at The Opening, earning overall MVP honors. Ridley teamed up with future Crimson Tide teammate Blake Barnett to capture the seven-on-seven tournament title.
"Calvin is pretty incredible, isn't he?" the 5-star quarterback said afterward. "He's such a talented receiver. ... I can't wait to get to work with him in Tuscaloosa."
Where He Signed: Alabama
Ridley committed to Nick Saban along with high school teammate Shawn Burgess-Becker while both attended Alabama's spring game. Florida State and Miami attempted to gain ground with the in-state recruit, but all roads lead to Tuscaloosa for the talented receiver.
10. LB Malik Jefferson
26 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 outside linebacker
High School: Poteet (Mesquite, Texas)
Size: 6'2.5", 215 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Malik Jefferson posted a mind-blowing 40-yard dash time (4.38 seconds) at The Opening. He combined quickness with physicality and a mean streak to become one of the most feared defenders in Texas.
Jefferson received the 2014 Butkus Award as America's top linebacker. He tallied 83 tackles and 12 sacks in 2014, displaying elite effectiveness in all phases of the game.
"I think I'm a balanced linebacker, and coaches can count on me to get the job done whatever we need to do," Jefferson told me prior to his senior campaign. "I like stuffing the run, but I have no problem dropping back to cover passes."
Where He Signed: Texas
A commitment from Jefferson is Charlie Strong's most significant in-state recruiting victory so far. He pledged to the Longhorns along with high school teammate DeAndre McNeal during a December announcement ceremony.
Jefferson arrived on campus in January as an early enrollee.
9. DE Josh Sweat
27 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 weak-side defensive end
High School: Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Virginia)
Size: 6'5", 240 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Josh Sweat jumped to No. 1 in national rankings this summer after outclassing elite competition at The Opening. However, an early season-ending knee injury dropped him to ninth on the final list.
You'll be hard-pressed to find a more impressive overall physical specimen in this class than Sweat, who has deservedly drawn comparisons to the top 2014 NFL draft pick, Jadeveon Clowney. He racked up 94 tackles and 22 sacks as a junior, his final full high school campaign.
"You have to be perfect against Sweat," 5-star offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt told me. "Otherwise, you're done."
Where He Signed: Florida State
The Seminoles edged out fellow finalists Ohio State, Georgia, Oregon and Virginia Tech. Sweat enrolled early and now has the luxury of rehabilitating with a collegiate training staff.
8. DB Kevin Toliver II
28 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 2 cornerback
High School: Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, Florida)
Size: 6'2", 185 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Kevin Toliver served as a two-way stalwart during a state title run in 2014, starring on a squad that included double-digit FBS recruits. His length and anticipation skills were really apparent at The Opening, where he manned up top-tier receivers and made many appear overwhelmed.
He intercepted three passes and rushed for eight touchdowns as a senior, earning first-team All-American status from USA Today.
Where He Signed: LSU
Toliver provided a catalyst for Les Miles' latest recruiting class by committing as a sophomore. The early pledge didn't prevent him from exploring other opportunities. Toliver took official visits to Auburn, Ohio State, Florida State and UCLA but ultimately landed on campus as an early enrollee.
7. DE CeCe Jefferson
29 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 2 strong-side defensive end
High School: Baker County (Glen Saint Mary, Florida)
Size: 6'2", 275 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
CeCe Jefferson brings brute force and a nice arsenal of power/finesse pass-rushing moves off the edge. He compiled 40.5 sacks through his first three seasons of high school, per USA Today, though a shoulder injury cost him most of the 2014 campaign.
Jefferson landed on the U.S. Army All-American Bowl roster.
Where He Signed: Florida
Florida made him a top priority through two coaching regimes, competing with campus visits to Auburn, Ole Miss, Alabama, Cincinnati and LSU. He eventually made Gator Nation happy by staying in his home state.
6. DT Kahlil McKenzie
30 of 35
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 2 defensive tackle
High School: Clayton Valley (Concord, California)
Size: 6'3", 354 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
His measurements may indicate a "lane-clogger," but Kahlil McKenzie is so much more than that. His power is already at a collegiate level, and impressive footwork should put him in position to punish off-balance blockers.
"I'm versatile at the defensive tackle position," McKenzie told me last July. "I can get to the quarterback, take on double-teams and stop the run. It's important to be able to do all those things in order to be successful at the next level."
The U.S. Army All-American Bowl participant is the son of Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie.
Where He Signed: Tennessee
He follows in his father's footsteps to Knoxville, providing a sturdy foundation for another tremendous talent haul for head coach Butch Jones. McKenzie committed to the Volunteers in July while competing at The Opening.
5. DB Derwin James
31 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 safety
High School: Haines City (Auburndale, Florida)
Size: 6'2", 201 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Derwin James landed on the national recruiting radar at a young age, pledging to Florida State before the end of his freshman year. The hard-hitting defensive back pulverizes running backs and receivers alike, tracking down ball-carriers with relentless pursuit.
He also excels in pass coverage, proving to be a highly aware downfield defender who provides his defense with an insurance policy. James produced four interceptions, 90 tackles and seven defensive touchdowns despite missing three games as a senior, per BigCountyPreps.com.
Where He Signed: Florida State
James maintained his commitment to the Seminoles for nearly three full years and spent a lot of time serving as an extension of the program's recruiting department while dealing with fellow Florida State targets. He finally arrived on campus in January as an early enrollee.
4. DB Iman Marshall
32 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 cornerback
High School: Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, California)
Size: 6'1", 190 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Iman Marshall has the perfect combination of physicality, smarts and swagger you look for in a top cornerback. The young man they call "Biggie" brings it on every play, aggressively attacking opponents at the line of scrimmage in press coverage and maintaining stride-for-stride coverage with fluid hips downfield.
He didn't allow a single pass completion in league play as a junior. Marshall followed up that effort with USA Today first-team All-American honors, securing 79 tackles and 16 pass breakups.
His success is based on far more than natural athletic gifts. He is a student of the game.
"Preparation is so important because it helps you react as quickly as possible, and that's what playing defensive back is all about," Marshall told me. "When you study something over and over again, nothing is a surprise anymore. You understand what's coming—the formations, the schemes, everything."
Where He Signed: USC
It's came down to the wire with six teams still in the mix for Marshall's commitment. He announced his finalists—USC, UCLA, LSU, Notre Dame, Michigan and Florida State—via an epic Bleacher Report video.
Marshall announced his decision in an exclusive Bleacher Report music video.
3. DE Byron Cowart
33 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 strong-side defensive end
High School: Armwood (Seffner, Florida)
Size: 6'4", 250 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Byron Cowart is a man-child who already blended in quite well with the NFL players who coached drills at The Opening. He provides a dynamic presence off the edge, offering a skill set that can be utilized in a stand-up or hand-down role.
Cowart collected 140 tackles and 24 sacks as an upperclassman. He secured a first-team spot on USA Today's All-American team following a senior campaign that included five forced fumbles and three blocked punts.
Where He Signed: Auburn
This set up as a battle between the Tigers and Florida, his final two official visits. He may ultimately have felt more comfortable with a role in Will Muschamp's defensive attack, punctuating his recruitment with a twist of irony after years of being pursued by him in Gainesville.
2. OL Martez Ivey
34 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 offensive tackle
High School: Apopka (Apopka, Florida)
Size: 6'5.5", 275 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Based on his high school development, Martez Ivey may have the highest "ceiling" of any prospect in this class. He's rapidly evolved from an unpolished freak athlete into a fundamentally sound first-day college starter.
His athleticism matches up against elite edge-rushers, and he proved it by holding his own against Josh Sweat (my top-rated 2015 pass-rusher) at The Opening. The U.S. Army All-American has the makings of a three-year collegiate contributor and early NFL draft pick.
Where He Signed: Florida
This is another premier prospect who pitted Florida and Auburn against each other. Those were his top two schools for much of the past year, though he ultimately elected to stay in his home state and provide Jim McElwain with a building block in Gainesville.
1. DT Trent Thompson
35 of 35247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 defensive tackle
High School: Westover (Albany, Georgia)
Size: 6'2.5", 313 lbs
Why He's a 5-Star
Trent Thompson tops this list, though it's never easy to call someone a clear-cut No. 1 overall prospect. We'll settle, at least, for best defensive tackle.
He shoots into the offensive backfield with agility and motor skills typically found at linebacker but does so with a 313-pound frame. Thompson unloads on running backs, racking up 74 tackles behind the line of scrimmage as an upperclassman.
Beyond the impressive measurables and statistics, his tenacity is simply inspiring to witness. Unless, of course, you're lined up across from him.
Where He Signed: Georgia
Mark Richt's diligence paid off in the pursuit of his top in-state target. Thompson considered several universities, including Auburn, Alabama and USC, but he found his home in Athens and committed last summer.
"I'm glad I committed before my senior year, because I wanted to be someone who helps build a class instead of waiting a while and joining late," Thompson told me. "That was important, and it allowed me to focus on my senior season rather than always dealing with recruiting stuff. It also gives me a chance to help bring other good players to Georgia."
The Bulldogs will look to unleash him early and often in 2015.
