Super Bowl 2015: Patriots vs. Seahawks Matchup Comparison, Head-to-Head Favorite

Brian MaziqueJan 30, 2015

Like any other football game, Super Bowl XLIX will come down to matchups. The team that is able to win the most important games within a game will be crowned champions.

According to Odds Shark, oddsmakers believe the New England Patriots will win more of the crucial matchups. The Pats are two-point favorites in the game. Let's take a closer look at the three most important battles in Sunday's game.

Patriots Offensive Line vs. Seahawks Defensive Line

It's pretty simple. If the Seattle Seahawks can get consistent pressure on Tom Brady without blitzing, the Patriots are in trouble. If Seattle can commit three linebackers and the Legion of Boom to pass coverage, even Brady won't be able to find places to throw the ball.

Also, if New England has to keep a running back in to help pass protect, it's one less weapon the Seahawks have to worry about in pass coverage.

As good as the Seahawks secondary is, their defensive line has taken pressure off its teammates all season.

Kam Chancellor vs. Rob Gronkowski

Almost no team in the NFL has an answer for Gronkowski in pass coverage. Linebackers who are big enough to match up with him don't have the speed. Almost no defensive backs have the size to cover Gronk.

However, there is at least one safety with the height and strength, and his name is Kam Chancellor. Even the Seahawks' official Twitter account is playing up the matchup.

The Seahawks fearsome strong safety is 6'3", 232 pounds, which is huge for his position.

He's also explosive and one of the most intimidating hitters in the NFL. He's not going to spook Gronk, but he at least has the length, strength and mobility to keep himself from being overpowered and outrun by the league's best tight end.

Brandon LaFell vs. Richard Sherman

LaFell is not an elite receiver, but he's got to get his respect when Sherman is covering him. If he can prove he can beat the league's best corner in spots, he'll earn the confidence of his quarterback.

Seattle might also be less likely to leave Sherman on an island to cover the lesser-known receiver. If more help is needed, it'll weaken other areas of the Seahawks' pass coverage. The Patriots have a growing history of unsuspecting wide receivers who have come up big for them.

In 2003, Troy Brown's contribution during the regular season and postseason helped push the Pats to the Super Bowl. In 2005, Deion Branch won MVP of Super Bowl XXXIX after an 11-catch performance. Could LaFell be the next under-the-radar receiver to shine?

We'll find out on Sunday.
