WWE NXT Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from January 28

Erik BeastonJan 29, 2015

The march toward NXT Takeover on February 11 continued this week on the WWE Network, as heavyweight champion Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens met inside the squared circle for the contract signing that would make their much-anticipated match at the live event special official.

Adrian Neville defeated longtime rival Tyson Kidd while Baron Corbin dismantled Bull Dempsey in No. 1 contender's tournament matches, setting up a battle between the unstoppable Corbin and "The Man That Gravity Forgot" in the semifinals.

In the night's most newsworthy moment, new NXT Tag Team champions were crowned, as the upstart duo of Buddy Murphy and Wesley Blake defeated Sin Cara and Kalisto, otherwise known as the Lucha Dragons, to capture the gold.

As the brand gears up for another of its critically acclaimed, pay-per-view-quality broadcasts, NXT delivered another strong episode of its weekly television.

Who emerged as winners, riding a wave of momentum on the road to Takeover, and who is in desperate need of a tide-turning performance?

Find out now.

Winners: Buddy Murphy and Wesley Blake

The young tandem of Murphy and Blake got their start on NXT as enhancement talent, victims of The Ascension and the Lucha Dragons as those two teams climbed the ranks of tag wrestling on the brand.

The more television exposure they enjoyed, however, the more it became clear that the team was comprised of two immensely talented individuals hellbent on doing whatever it took to become stars—even if that meant they had to put personal aspirations for singles glory aside and conquer the world of tag wrestling first.

That is exactly what they did Wednesday night when they seized an opportunity and defeated Sin Cara and Kalisto to capture the gold.

It was a huge victory for the team and one that immediately sets them atop NXT as its premier team.

Now, it will be up to them to continue to learn, grow and develop as workers if they are to build upon the considerable momentum they are enjoying this early in 2015.

Loser: Bull Dempsey

Remember when the big man Dempsey was treated like a worldbeater, when he was tearing through competition and destroying it with diving headbutts to add to his undefeated streak?

After two decisive, fast losses to Corbin in three weeks, the throwback competitor has hit a speed bump on his journey to the top of the industry.

Completely outclassed by Corbin in every way imaginable, Dempsey was exposed throughout the rivalry and will need some serious rebuilding if he is to make an impact going forward.

Winner: Kevin Owens

Despite being a completely despicable heel whose attacks on Sami Zayn seemingly turned the NXT audience against him, Owens has a way of making audiences begrudgingly like him.

During Wednesday's broadcast, he cited the fact that the NXT Championship would bring him more money and, as a result, make the lives of his family easier. There is no more understandable reason for anyone doing anything than that.

As much as fans may hate that he betrayed his career-long friend the way he did, he has valid reasoning for doing so, something that may actually turn some of the audience in his favor.

Of course, it could all be a lie to justify his actions—in which case, he is the most evil of villains. Whatever the case may be, Owens is a compelling villain whom fans are actually intrigued by and interested in, something the company has not produced in quite some time.
