Liverpool Left to Rue Lack of Cutting Edge in Chelsea League Cup Exit

Matt LadsonJan 27, 2015

Liverpool bowed out of the League Cup after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in the second leg of the semi-final at Stamford Bridge.

Branislav Ivanovic's unmarked header five minutes into extra time proved the only goal of the game, sending Jose Mourinho's side through to the final 2-1 on aggregate—the first time the Portuguese has beat Liverpool in a semi-final at the fourth attempt.

The result, though, keeps Brendan Rodgers' unwanted run of not having beat a Mourinho side and denied him the chance to get his first final as Liverpool boss.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Rodgers said: "Over the two legs we were the better side but their goalkeeper has got them to the final.

"The players gave everything. We created chances to win the game but unfortunately weren't quite clinical enough.

"That final pass or final finish that was lacking."

And there you have the story of Liverpool's 2014/15 season. The problem that has beset them since September.

It is the story of Liverpool's season. From the departure of Luis Suarez in the summer, to Daniel Sturridge missing over half the campaign through injury, to Mario Balotelli's much-documented problems, to exiling then bringing back in Fabio Borini and finally to resorting to playing Raheem Sterling as a centre-forward.

Liverpool's lack of a clinical forward has completely derailed their season, and it has been compounded by the fact the whole of the rest of the side lack composure to add goals either.

Time and again chances have gone begging, and the Chelsea game summed it up. Liverpool could have played for longer than the 120 minutes, all night, and they still wouldn't have scored.

Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho, Steven Gerrard, Sterling and Alberto Moreno were all guilty of failing to take good chances.

Substitutions

Meanwhile, the introduction of Balotelli threatened spectators in the upper tier more than the net Thibaut Courtois was defending. Balotelli's most meaningful contribution to the game was his slack pass, which gave the ball away for the free-kick leading to Ivanovic's goal.

The Italian was then arguably at fault for Ivanovic's header from the resulting free-kick. It was another occasion in which Rodgers' words will come back to haunt him, having said this of Balotelli shortly after his arrival in August (via The Independent):

"We were doing corners [in training] and I said to him, ‘I’m putting you on [a man] at [defensive] corners. He said: 'I don't mark at corners.' I said: ‘You do now!’ He went in and he had a great header from a corner. Treat him like an adult with responsibility …"

Liverpool supporters will have been bemused to see Balotelli brought on instead of Adam Lallana midway through the second half, and it's a substitution that looks even worse with hindsight. Balotelli's lazy attitude was apparent again, giving the ball away far too carelessly and firing over from distance when the team had numbers forward in a good position.

Two things that have trademarked his Liverpool career. There was also a failure to make a near-post run when Moreno crossed from the left.

"

Easy to look for scapegoats at this stage but, in hindsight, Balotelli and Lambert were wrong choices today.

Hindsight is wonderful in football, but the introduction of Balotelli instead of Lallana shaped the game and saw Liverpool struggle to retain possession from that point on. Chelsea began to boss proceedings, and Liverpool lacked control, especially in the final third.

Rodgers then opted to bring on Rickie Lambert at half-time in extra time, leaving Lallana as an unused sub. The former Southampton man, Rodgers' No.1 priority in the summer and signed for £23 million, will be disappointed to have not been involved on such an occasion. From a supporter's perspective it was disappointing too.

It's an alarming statistic, but Lallana is Liverpool's third top goalscorer this season—with four goals.

That in itself goes a long way in explaining Liverpool's problems over the season; not enough goals and not enough players contributing goals.

The chances have been there, but the quality and conviction of shooting have been consistently poor. Clinical is not a word associated with Liverpool this season—a stark contrast to 12 months ago.

The return of Sturridge could not come quicker and thankfully it looks to be imminent, but much is relied upon him—too much perhaps?
