Most Dramatic Moments of the Week

Garrett BakerJan 30, 2015

This past snow-filled week plunged us further into the depths of winter, but there has still been plenty of action around the world of sports.

On top of the snow, we also survived the first week and weekend without football since last summer, but hoops, hockey and soccer kept the schedules full.

Here are the most dramatic moments in sports from the past week.

Chelsea vs. Liverpool

1 of 8

Chelsea and Liverpool had played to a 1-1 draw in their first game of this Capital One Cup semifinal matchup, and the second leg would be even better than the first.

The two teams played an incredibly spirited first 90 minutes, with multiple close calls and great chances wasted as regulation finished goalless.

Yet a mere three minutes into extra time, Branislav Ivanovic ripped a shot into the back of the net to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead.

They would struggle to hold on to the victory but came out ahead after 120 minutes to advance to the final.

Rose Wins It in OT

2 of 8

The Golden State Warriors had won 19 in a row heading into Tuesday's contest with the Chicago Bulls and were up seven points heading into the fourth quarter.

But Pau Gasol and Derrick Rose helped the Bulls climb back into it, and Kirk Hinrich knocked down a three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining to put them up two.

Draymond Green notched a putback shot with 1.4 seconds remaining to send it into overtime. That's when the fun started.

The two teams traded buckets while playing stingy defense before Rose hit a beautiful step-back jumper with seven seconds left to put Chicago up 113-111. It would be the game-winning shot.

Notre Dame Stuffs NC State in OT

3 of 8

This should have been a relatively easy win for the eighth-ranked Fighting Irish, but it turned out to be anything but a cakewalk against NC State.

Notre Dame actually found itself reeling in the second half and were down by four points with under 25 seconds to go.

A quick basket followed by an NC State turnover on the inbounds pass opened up the door for Notre Dame to send the game into overtime.

The two teams fought back and forth until Notre Dame established a three-point lead and then came up with a clutch block with just a couple of seconds on the clock.

Notre Dame Comes Back Against Duke

4 of 8

It's rare for a team to make it onto this list twice in one week, but Notre Dame had a couple of incredible games in the past few days.

After their thrilling late-game heroics against NC State, the Fighting Irish hosted the Duke Blue Devils in South Bend for a top-10 showdown.

They were down at halftime and found themselves down by as much as 10 in the second half, but they rallied for the comeback behind Jerian Grant's outstanding performance.

Gray outdueled fellow star Jahlil Okafor, registering 23 points and 12 assists to fuel a 77-73 victory.

Pacquiao and Mayweather Meet

5 of 8

It seems almost impossible that Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather had never met in person, doesn't it?

But that was somehow true until Tuesday night, when the two legendary boxers sat courtside across from each other at the Miami Heat game.

The two then got up and talked at halftime while the entire stadium looked on and the rest of the world followed via social media.

They apparently exchanged numbers and will now be able to personally discuss setting up a fight themselves, according to ESPN.com's Dan Rafael. Regardless, it was still a cool moment to see these two come together for the first time in such a public arena.

Berdych Shocks Nadal

6 of 8

Rafael Nadal doesn't lose often, and he had beaten Tomas Berdych 17 consecutive times before Monday.

But in the Australian Open quarterfinals, Berdych looked unbeatable, as Nadal faltered at numerous key moments.

Nadal surged late in the match, but it was too little, too late for the Spaniard. Berdych took the victory 6-2, 6-0, 7-6 and moved on to the semifinals in the most surprising result of 2015 thus far.

Kings Rally to Beat Blackhawks

7 of 8

The Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks have established a heck of a rivalry over the past few years as they've battled for Western Conference supremacy.

On Wednesday night, that rivalry culminated in a sensational game that had all the intensity and passion of a playoff matchup.

L.A. found themselves down 2-1 going into the second period but were able to tie it up with a nice Jeff Carter goal. Chicago took another lead in the third, but the Kings battled back yet again.

With less than seven minutes to go, the Kings staged a furious rally with Tyler Toffoli tying it up on a wicked wrist shot. Then with only 3:37 left to play, Jake Muzzin took a shot from the blue line that beat Corey Crawford for the win.

Irving Scores 55

8 of 8

With LeBron James out for the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night, somebody needed to step up against the dangerous Portland Trail Blazers.

Kyrie Irving did just that, playing arguably the best game of his young career. He outscored the rest of the Cavaliers team, helping stave off a Portland comeback in the third quarter to keep Cleveland ahead.

This high-energy game came down to the wire, and who else but Irving stepped up to drain a three-pointer to break a 94-94 tie with the clock winding down.

Irving then sealed the game with a defensive rebound and two free throws with 2.1 seconds left, giving the Cavs a thrilling 99-94 win sans LeBron.
