Overview
South Africa were tested by the West Indies for the first time during the course of the five-match ODI series on Sunday. With Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander both rested for the match, it was up to second-string bowlers Wayne Parnell and Kyle Abbott to lead the attack. For the most part, they applied themselves aptly, but Andre Russell blew South Africa away toward the end to help his team to a one-wicket win.
AB de Villiers admitted afterward that a little bit of pressure got to the team, but these are exactly the kind of situations South Africa need before the World Cup. Also encouraging for South Africa is that David Miller finally scored a ton, and it couldn’t have been more important with Hashim Amla rested, and the usual key players stuttering.
For the fifth and final match, Amla will return, while De Villiers will be rested. The South African brain trust are hopeful of young Quinton de Kock making his comeback in the final match, way head of the projected schedule.
For both teams, this is the final opportunity go get their match intensity up before they head to the World Cup. While South Africa have won the series already, it is important to keep their momentum going. The Windies, meanwhile, could do with any confidence they can get after enduring a treacherous time on the pitch in the last few months.
Key players
South Africa
Quinton de Kock’s return will be watched with a beady eye. His opening partnership with Hashim Amla has been blossoming over the last few months, and it will be crucial that these two pick up where they left off.
West Indies
Andre Russell showed why he is so valuable for the West Indies when his blitz in the fourth ODI helped his team to a thrilling one-wicket win. If the Windies box clever and use him correctly, he could have a massive impact on their chances.
