Super Bowl National Anthem 2015: Singer Info, Start Time and Prop Bet Lines

Kenny DeJohnJan 26, 2015

The national anthem can make or break the early stages of the Super Bowl from a fan's standpoint.

It sets the tone for the game from the start. A powerful performance that brings down the house gets the crowd and players amped up and ready for the opening kickoff. A lousy, forgettable performance results in droning and anxiety from everyone in the stadium.

Under what category will this year's rendition fall? Broadway star Idina Menzel is tasked with starting the night off right. Below, you can learn a little more about her before she grabs the mic and hits the high notes at Super Bowl XLIX.

Menzel has big shoes to fill given the history of the national anthem at the Super Bowl. She broke the news herself that she'd be performing, showing her knowledge of the honor she had been bestowed:

A famous performer, Menzel has been in the news frequently with both positive and negative headlines.

The accolades began pouring in as a result of Disney's movie Frozen. She sang the song you've probably heard six million times if you have a child aged two to 12, "Let It Go."

She won the Behind the Voice Actors People's Choice Award for Best Female Lead Vocal Performance in a Feature Film for the role, receiving nominations from several other organizations too. Naturally, this made her agent busy during award season, as she was called upon to serenade audiences with her most famous hit to date.

Here is where some of the negativity comes in.

Menzel made headlines—and not because of her own misstep—when John Travolta didn't even come close to pronouncing her name correctly at the 2014 Oscars:

She proceeded to give a rendition of "Let It Go" at the Oscars that Rolling Stone did not care for in the least: "The Wicked star turned the whole song into one long yell, working both the sustained high notes and the tamer parts of the verses with the exact same lets-put-on-show gusto. This is what trying way to hard looks like."

After a few quieter months from Menzel, she hit the big stage again on New Year's Eve 2014. She was in Times Square to perform "Let It Go," but she couldn't hit the high note correctly, and it left a sour taste (and sound) in the mouths (and ears) of listeners:

All this adds up to the national anthem being an enormous hit-or-miss for the NFL.

Menzel has the chops to bring the crowd to tears. Her experience on Broadway and singing chart-toppers proves that she has the stage presence to stay composed. Conversely, her faults in other big-time events seems to indicate that she cracks under pressure.

Sorry, Oscars, but there's no bigger pressure than having 63,400 crazed football fans waiting for you to slip up.

Perhaps it's safe to bet that she'll omit a word or mess up altogether.

Similarly, bet the over on how long her performance will last. She is used to Broadway and Disney. It's all about drawing out high notes and emphasizing certain words or phrases along the way. She doesn't seem capable of flying through the anthem.

It's safe to say that the national anthem will be a memorable one, for better or for worse. But if you think Menzel is going to back down from the challenge, you should just let that thought go immediately.
