Super Bowl Halftime Show 2015: Katy Perry Prop Bets and Expectations

Nate LoopJan 26, 2015

It was a rumor long before it became objective reality, but surreal pop star Katy Perry will indeed take the stage at halftime of the 2015 Super Bowl.

She's a fairly obvious choice considering her ubiquity on the pop charts and should have no problem handling the glaring spotlight of a global audience. Here's to hoping her performance is more Prince than it is Black Eyed Peas.

Football purists may see the gaudy halftime shows as an unwelcome distraction, but the entertainment does seem purposeful to a wide range of people.

Fans of Perry herself will no doubt be tuning in, while others might see the show as the perfect time for a food or bathroom break. Perry's show will no doubt be part of what makes the Super Bowl such a special entertainment spectacle, and gamblers will of course rejoice with the number of prop bets revolving around Perry.

That's right, the exotic bets aren't restricted to the on-field action, the national anthem, commercials, the coin toss or what's said in the announcer's booth. Nothing is off limits when it comes to Super Bowl wagers, and Perry's performance is no exception.

Here is a look at the Perry props one may partake in, along with a look at the expectations for the performance as a whole.

What color will Katy Perry's hair be when she begins the halftime show?Black/Brown 2-1, Pink/Red 3-1, Blue/Green 3-1, Blonde 4-1, Purple 5-1

Perry's prepped the nation for her foray into football entertainment, perhaps most notably when she interjected herself into the college football fan's consciousness during an October edition of ESPN's College GameDay and actually did a fine job of picking games. Now, she's set to dominate the Super Bowl with her familiar tunes and bombastic stage persona.

Of course, that bizarre appearance on College GameDay came before it was confirmed she would be the Super Bowl halftime entertainment and, as Grantland's Molly Lambert suggested, was perhaps calling attention to the process by which acts secure the coveted performance slot:

"

The real reason Perry may have appeared on the show was to shoot down the rumor that she might be the Super Bowl halftime show act this year, which she turned down due to the new policy that acts must pay to play the gig. Perry said, “We had some conversations, and I would be honored, of course, but … I have let them know that I’m not the type of girl that would pay to play the Super Bowl, so … the ball is in their field.” The NFL apparently thinks artists will pay for the exposure offered by the gig, which maybe makes sense to them in theory, but in reality means every A-list group is going to turn down the gig and they will get stuck with whoever can afford it. The NFL’s director of corporate communications, Joanna Hunter, pleaded the fifth when asked about her knowledge of the offer to Perry.

"

This media play probably made Perry's eventual confirmation as the halftime act a bit surprising to some observers, but it shouldn't take away from the festivities once the show begins.

As for the prop bets, the hair one seems a bit dicey, from both the house and the bettor's standpoint. What if Perry has pink/red and blue in her hair? What if she adds a few faux petals to this giant floral hat and completely obscures her hair color? The question seems a bit open-ended, and there are just too many variables on this one. With Perry, anything is possible.

The over/under on the number of times Perry's name is mentioned in the first half seems like a more logical bet to play. The number is low (1.5), and it's actually possible to do research on this one if you have a buddy who never clears the TiVo/DVR cache and enough time to rewatch a past Super Bowl and listen to the number of times the halftime act has been mentioned in years past. The over seems like a solid play here.

As for songs, I just hope Perry throws the ultimate nonsensical curveball and plays "Last Friday Night" first on Super Bowl Sunday.
