Texas A&M Recruiting: Why Kyler Murray Should Sign with the Aggies

Michael TaglientiJan 27, 2015

The Texas A&M Aggies need to sign a quarterback in their 2015 recruiting class. Kyler Murray is currently committed to A&M and should sign with the program on Feb. 4 for a variety of reasons.

Murray is the most important recruit in the class. He would walk onto campus in August and immediately be the backup quarterback.

The Aggies only have one scholarship quarterback on campus right now, incumbent starter Kyle Allen, so Murray might even play in 2015—although the Aggies would prefer to redshirt him.

In the right system, Murray could be a Heisman-level performer. This is a look at why he should sign with Texas A&M on national signing day.

The Right Offense

Texas A&M runs the perfect offense for Kyler Murray's skills.

Murray won three consecutive state titles at Allen High School, where he ran the spread offense. As a senior, he passed for 4,713 yards and rushed for 1,495 while accounting for 79 total touchdowns. He is one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the history of Texas high school football.

At A&M, Murray will operate in an offense similar to what he ran in high school. Allen runs a spread offense with some zone-read aspects in the running game. The Aggies do the same thing.

Murray played at the highest classification of football in Texas; Johnny Manziel played at the same level, and he passed for 3,609 yards, rushed for 1,674 yards and scored 75 total touchdowns during his senior year.

Manziel won the Heisman Trophy in Kevin Sumlin's offense in 2012. Murray is a more polished passer than Manziel was coming out of high school and could have a similar impact in the Aggies offense.

Time to Develop

If Murray comes to A&M, he will not have to be the man right away. He will be able to sit back and learn the nuances of the offense from starting quarterback Kyle Allen.

Few quarterbacks are ready to play major college football as true freshmen. The ones who typically have the most success enroll in college early and spend the spring semester of their senior year in high school working out with the team.

Murray is likely going to play baseball during the spring. He will not have the luxury of going through spring practice and learning the offense.

At Texas A&M he will likely play as a true freshman as the backup quarterback. He will not be asked to carry the load as the starter right away. He will not be thrown to the wolves in a sink-or-swim situation.

Great Supporting Cast

3 of 4

If Murray decides to sign with Texas A&M, he will join a program bursting at the seams with offensive talent at the skill positions. The Aggies return nine receivers who saw significant playing time in 2014 as freshmen or sophomores.

They return three offensive linemen, four receivers who caught 30 or more passes in 2014 and their leading rusher. The Aggies should have one of the most explosive offenses in college football in 2015, and Murray can be a part of that.

The Aggies program is on the way up. The 2014 season was a transitional year where the Aggies had some growing pains with some younger players. The recruiting efforts of Kevin Sumlin and his staff during the past couple of seasons should start to come to fruition on the field.

With John Chavis running the defense, the Aggies should be improved on both sides of the ball in 2015. They will have the talent and coaching in place to legitimately compete for a national title for the next few years.

He Is a Legacy

4 of 4

Kyler Murray is the son of former Texas A&M quarterback Kevin Murray, who broke most of the school's passing records during his time as the starting quarterback from 1983-1986.

The elder Murray was revered for his ability to lead A&M to comeback wins and became a legend in Aggies football lore.

Kyler Murray has the potential to exceed his father's play on the field. He has a chance to play at his father's alma mater with a talented team around him in the top football conference in the country. Kyler Murray grew up an Aggies fans, and now he can play on the same field where his father starred three decades ago.
