5 Questions Chelsea Fans Would Love to Ask Roman Abramovich

Garry HayesJan 25, 2015

Roman Abramovich has been the Chelsea owner for over a decade now.

Since 2003 he has invested significantly in the club to propel the Blues among European football's elite, ushering in an era of unprecedented success.

Chelsea have won three Premier League titles under his reign, alongside the Champions League, four FA Cups, the Europa League and two League Cups.

For all that he has delivered, Chelsea fans still know very little about Abramovich, however. His background has been well covered in the media, but what of Abramovich the man?

The Russian remains extremely private and has never given an interview in the 12 years he has been Chelsea owner.

If Chelsea fans could sit down with him, what would they ask Abramovich?

Bleacher Report has thought of five questions of our own.

What's Your Biggest Regret as Chelsea Owner?

1 of 5

For all the positives Roman Abramovich has brought to Chelsea, there have been some notable occasions when things have gone awry.

First there was the departure of Jose Mourinho in September 2007 when Chelsea looked set to dominate English football for some time.

Then followed a glut of managerial appointments, starting with Avram Grant, finishing with Rafa Benitez in 2013 before Mourinho eventually returned.

Those six years saw Chelsea hire eight different managers, either permanently or on an interim basis.

It cost Abramovich a lot of money in severence cheques, not to mention stalling progress on the pitch.

There have been some catastrophic failures in the transfer market, too.

Shaun Wright-Phillips was a £24 million flop from Manchester City, and Andrey Shevchenko was even more costly when he signed for £30 million from AC Milan.

Fernando Torres never lived up to his £50 million price tag, either.

So Roman, what's your biggest regret as Chelsea owner?

After Your First Decade in Charge, What's Planned for the Next 10 Years?

2 of 5

As we've already discussed, Roman Abramovich's arrival at Chelsea in 2003 has brought about unprecedented levels of success in west London.

Now that we're well into the second decade of Abramovich's reign, what's the plan?

In the first 10 years it was about establishing Chelsea as a global name, winning trophies and snapping up the finest talent in the process.

Chelsea are looking far more savvy with their business model these days, however. In these days of Financial Fair Play, they are balancing the books and looking somewhat shrewd.

While we can speculate as to how the club is operating, what does it say about the upcoming years?

Success is built on continued progress and making the right investments, not resting on your laurels.

What are Chelsea doing to ensure they will not become the next Liverpool—a club that enjoyed a glorious 20 years of success in the 1970s and 1980s before going 25 years and counting without a league title?

The decisions Abramovich makes now are more important than anything he has helped Chelsea achieve in the past 12 years.

Will Jose Mourinho Be Given Time to Build a Chelsea Dynasty?

3 of 5

After his European tour of Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, the impression we get from Jose Mourinho these days is that he is finally ready to settle at one club and create a dynasty akin to other great managers throughout the history of football.

Now back in the Premier League, it seems that dynasty will be at Chelsea.

But will it?

All seems fine at Stamford Bridge right now. Chelsea have a settled structure throughout the club that Mourinho has bought into, the transfer policy seems to be working and the Academy is producing talented players.

As we saw last season when Chelsea didn't win anything for the first time since 2011, there are often hiccups along the way, however.

Mourinho is building something special at Chelsea, but what happens if the trophies aren't forthcoming immediately? Will he be given time? Does Abramovich have the patience to wait?

One thing is clear, stability is needed at Stamford Bridge if Chelsea are to go on and achieve greatness.

Are Chelsea Becoming a Selling Club?

4 of 5

As we have seen in the past 18 months or so, Chelsea aren't afraid to let big-name players leave if the price is right.

Last January Juan Mata—twice named Chelsea's Player of the Year—was sold to Manchester United for £37.1 million. Six months later he was followed out the door by David Luiz, who joined Paris Saint-Germain for £50 million.

In those instances, both players were beginning to look peripheral figures. Mata had been dropped in favour of Oscar in the No. 10 role, and Gary Cahill had pushed David Luiz to the bench.

Despite their profile, it was no surprise they left the club.

That said, it's a major change in the club's policy, especially with Mata joining rivals Manchester United.

Never before had Chelsea allowed players to leave in their prime, but the way the club operates, they are making decisions based on financial means, not just football.

So what if Real Madrid offered a considerable fee for Eden Hazard? Or Paris Saint-Germain came calling for Diego Costa?

Would Chelsea sell then?

Does Chelsea Belong to the Abramovichs Now?

5 of 5

Throughout the history of football we've seen families own clubs for generations.

In Italy, for instance, the Morattis owned Inter Milan since the 1960s before the recent sale to Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir. And at Chelsea, the Mears family who founded the club in 1905 owned it for over 70 years.

Are we now going to see a similar family dynasty at Chelsea with the Abramovichs?

This is a big factor to consider for Chelsea fans. While they appreciate everything Abramovich has done for the club, they are equally eager to know what the future holds.

Abramovich has been excellent for Chelsea and English football in general. He has injected vast sums into the club and the transfer market, the excitement of it all bringing added focus from across the globe.

If Chelsea's future isn't secure, it would have been for nothing, though.

Does Abramovich plan to sell in the long term? Or does he intend to pass the ownership down to future generations?
