Breaking Down Patriots vs. Seahawks
The Super Bowl is all about the matchup between the New England offensive unit and the Seattle defense. While there is no doubt the Patriots defense and Seahawks offensive unit will play a role in the outcome of the game, the battle will be won or lost on the other side of the ball.
For New England, the game will be depicted by the play of quarterback Tom Brady. After racking up 593 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions in his first two postseason games this season, there is no doubt that the team will lean on him again.
Despite Seattle boasting the league’s top ranked pass defense (allowing just 185.6 yards per game), Brady and the entire passing attack should be able to rack up solid numbers. Here are the predicted offensive stats for the Patriots:
| Tom Brady | 25/35 | 250 | 2 | 1 |
| LeGarrette Blount | 25 | 120 | 1 | 0 |
| Shane Vereen | 5 | 25 | 0 | 0 |
| Rob Gronkowski | 11 | 100 | 1 | 0 |
| Julian Edelman | 7 | 90 | 1 | 0 |
| Brandon LaFell | 4 | 30 | 0 | 0 |
| Shane Vereen | 3 | 30 | 0 | 0 |
On the other hand, the Seahawks offense looked terrible at times against Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game, and quarterback Russell Wilson could have another tough day following his four-interception performance. Here are the Seattle offense’s predicted stats:
| Russell Wilson | 18/28 | 250 | 2 | 2 |
| Marshawn Lynch | 18 | 80 | 1 | 0 |
| Russell Wilson | 10 | 20 | 0 | 1 |
| Doug Baldwin | 6 | 90 | 1 | 0 |
| Jermaine Kearse | 5 | 60 | 0 | 0 |
| Marshawn Lynch | 3 | 40 | 1 | 0 |
| Luke Willson | 2 | 30 | 0 | 0 |
| Paul Richardson | 2 | 30 | 0 | 0 |
Finding the MVP of the Super Bowl is always the toughest prediction. Players from both sides of the ball on each team are fighting harder than they ever have before, and there are players who rise to the occasion. In this year’s game, look for a surprise winner like New England running back LeGarrette Blount.
While the Patriots abandoned the run against Baltimore in the divisional round (Blount racked up one yard on three carries), the team was committed to a ground attack against Indianapolis, feeding Blount 30 times for 148 yards and three touchdowns.
Seattle finished the regular season ranked third against the run (allowing 81.5 yards per game), but gave up 135 yards on 30 carries to the Packers last weekend. If Brady plays well early and forces the defense to play more coverage, Blount should be able to wear down the Seahawks front seven with his physical running style.
If Blount finds a rhythm, Brady and the Patriots will be able to seal the victory. Look for Blount to walk away as Super Bowl MVP just a few weeks removed from being released by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Predicted Final Score: New England 27, Seattle 24
