Super Bowl 2015 Halftime Show: Katy Perry Spoilers, Performer Rumors and More

Scott PolacekJan 21, 2015

The first half of Super Bowl XLIX is not a bad opening act for the real show on Sunday, Feb. 1 in University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona—the Super Bowl halftime show starring Katy Perry.

Of course, this being the Super Bowl halftime show, Perry will not be the only performer, as the NFL noted:

In other Super Bowl music news, Idina Menzel will perform the national anthem and likely get the Frozen song stuck in everyone’s head in the process.

Perry hinted that her performance will be a 12-minute show featuring a number of her greatest hits and even a couple of costume changes.

Perry is an international pop sensation thanks to three multiplatinum studio albums. Her debut album was One of the Boys in 2008, but she really hit it big in 2010 when she released Teenage Dream. Teenage Dream was the album that made Perry the only female artist to feature five No. 1 singles from one album on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Her most recent album was titled Prism.

Those chart-topping singles from Teenage Dream were "Teenage Dream", "Firework", "E.T.", "Last Friday Night" and "California Gurls." It’s safe to say that Perry will perform a number of those hits at halftime.

Perry suggested that there could be more collaborations during the halftime performance outside of just Lenny Kravitz, which naturally piques the curiosity of music fans across the country like any good rumor would.

Perry has featured a number of fellow superstars on songs, including Snoop Dogg on "California Gurls" and Kanye West on "E.T.", so hip-hop fans would be advised to tune in just in case of a surprise performance.

While the Super Bowl halftime performance is intended as a lighthearted spectacle in the middle of the biggest football game of the year, the NFL is coming off a season that was marred by highly-publicized domestic assault issues, including the one involving Ray Rice.

Perry talked about her performance in the context of some of those incidents, according to The Associated Press (via Billboard.com):

"

It wasn't an image problem, it was a problem. We were all watching and asking ourselves questions about what this year would mean. But I think that the problem that the NFL is dealing with is a global problem ... we need to work out -- or educate people on.

I'm all about female empowerment and uplifting people's spirits, and people finding their own voice with songs like 'Roar' and 'Firework,' so maybe there is no better person. Hopefully I can bring that incredible strength and empowerment to people through the performance.

"

It is hard to fault Perry for taking that attitude about her halftime performance, and if her past shows are any indication, she will likely deliver in a grand way.

She is still touring on her Prismatic World Tour that has already sold out 17 arenas in the United Kingdom, 25 in Australia and New Zealand and 66 in North America. The tour will continue in 2015 in a number of different venues across the world.

Joshua Zucker of the San Francisco Chronicle offered a review of one of Perry's shows:

"

In the end, the program spanned two hours and eight costume changes and comprised 21 songs, drawing heavily from the most recent release, “Prism,” but representing all three studio albums. With 'Prism,' Perry now has enough material to pack a two-hour concert with hits without having to resort to filler material.

The banter between songs was clearly scripted and felt a bit forced at times, but the audience hung on every word. Perry dresses up well, but underneath it you sense an ordinary person who’s just happy to be there hanging out with you. Just good fun. To pick it apart any further would be missing the point.

"

While someone with a tour schedule like that won’t likely be fazed by the spotlight, last season’s halftime show was the most-watched musical event in history with more than 115 million viewers.

Don’t be surprised if Perry’s performance draws in even more spectators.
