Overview

India are coming off a narrow loss; England are coming off a hiding. For both, the immediate response is vital.

In the series opener in Sydney on Friday, Eoin Morgan's reign endured a rough beginning as England were hammered at the SCG as the hosts claimed a bonus-point victory with ease. Two wickets were lost in the first over, three were down inside four and, despite the captain's fine hundred, a total of 234 was never enough—not against this Australian team, anyway. David Warner propelled the home side to victory with more than 10 overs to spare.

Two days later, Mitchell Starc produced a case of deja vu when he captured another opener in the first over, this time Shikhar Dhawan at the MCG in Melbourne. And like Morgan, Rohit Sharma valiantly resisted the tide and reached a memorable hundred. But like Morgan's, it wasn't enough; Australia chased down the required 268 with six balls up their sleeve.

If England and India are to challenge the hosts in this series, the equation is simple: They need more runs.

For MS Dhoni's team, of course, that's an easier task, with his side's batting stocks full of explosive power and dynamism. While only two of Dhoni's batsmen passed 20 against Australia, it was an occurrence you wouldn't expect to repeat itself on Tuesday.

Morgan and England, meanwhile, face an array of challenges. In the series opener, the team's batting lineup looked limited and incapable of setting the pace that's demanded in modern 50-over cricket. And with the ball, the four-man seam attack of Stuart Broad, Steven Finn, Chris Woakes and Chris Jordan looked one-dimensional and rather toothless.

The return of James Anderson to the XI should help that, but how this team can post a winning total with the bat based on Friday's performance is sure to pose some headaches.

Ian Bell came into this tour of Australia insisting he and his team would be more aggressive than they'd previously been in one-day cricket.

In the warm-up game that preceded the series opener, Bell made good on that promise and thumped a stunning 187. But Starc and a first-ball duck quickly put a halt to that in Sydney on Friday.

Now staring at a possibly quick exit from this tri-series, Bell stands as the key figure in the England top-order and is the player who can help his team post a total that could push India.

If he gets going, England are capable of getting the score of 300 they desperately need.

India

Virat Kohli has enjoyed a breathtaking summer in Australia, but Tuesday's clash pits the Indian superstar against the team who got the better of him in 2014.

Indeed, Kohli's tour of England last year was a miserable one, with Anderson in particular exposing a weakness to the moving ball outside off-stump.

This match in Brisbane, of course, will take place in vastly different conditions to those seen in England, but it will be interesting to see whether Kohli has addressed his problems against the England attack or whether Anderson and Co. still have his measure.
