Super Bowl 2015: Opening Odds for Patriots vs. Seahawks, Top Prop Bets History

R. Cory SmithJan 19, 2015

Let the betting begin.

The 2015 Super Bowl is officially set after a riveting NFC championship and lackluster AFC title game. Given the unpredictability of the two teams involved in the illustrious game, there's no telling how the odds will eventually shake out.

Due to their play down the stretch, the spread for the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks is extremely tight. In a game that might wind up being a defensive showdown, the over-under line is under 50 points, as well.

Prop Bets History

The Super Bowl is a special event for several different reasons, but the prop bets are always entertaining. This year will likely be no different with two teams very familiar to this stage.

But before the prop bets are released, taking a look at some of the most common bets can be done early on. Bets on the coin flip, national anthem and overall MVP are a regular occurrence and have plenty of history to look back on.

For those who like to take a bet that literally has 50-50 odds, the coin flip is for you. In order to simply make it to the Super Bowl, a win during the coin flip was crucial for the Seahawks. Bryan Fischer of NFL.com noted the group that was sent up for the overtime process:

That's not to say that Tarvaris Jackson and Co. will head back up, but the Seahawks do have a lucky streak going in.

Outside of selecting which team will win the flip, choosing between heads and tails is equally as unknown. In the first 48 Super Bowls, it has literally been a dead heat with both sides winning 24 times. Heads has been the correct call in five of the last six seasons, but tails was the winner last year.

Now for something a little more dicey with the timing of the national anthem. This year, Idina Menzel of Disney's Frozen and Broadway fame will be performing the timeless song. As Darren Rovell of ESPN notes, an early line was set by one betting website:

If the mark is over two minutes, it will be a rarity from the last nine seasons in the NFL. Just three times since Super Bowl XL has a performer or performers gone over two minutes, with Alicia Keys setting the longest mark at 2:35 back in 2013.

The final prop bet of the night is also one to watch, as the winner of the MVP Trophy is also a common betting line. Malcolm Smith won last year, but a quarterback has taken the award in 10 of the last 16 Super Bowls.

Bettors placing their money on Seattle might be hesitant to go with Russell Wilson after his performance in the NFC Championship Game. But with Tom Brady on the other side, the three-time champion might be looking to add a second Super Bowl MVP to his collection.
