Crazy Sports Quotes and Sound Bite Fails
As hard as we always try to choose our words carefully and say the right things, there's no denying that a slip of the tongue happens every once in awhile.
And, while you or I could get away with it without feeling like a complete dummy, people in sports aren't always so lucky.
With microphones shoved in their faces and questions asked each and every day, it's only common for a few of them to say something wrong—which is always pretty funny to see.
Here are some of the best sports quotes and sound bite fails.
Honorable Mention: Barack Obama Loves James Flacco
1 of 13Normally a pretty cool character, President Barack Obama had a moment where his street cred might have taken a hit—or, at the very least, his movie knowledge.
While talking about the movie The Interview during a press conference last month, Obama thought he would mention how humorous it was to him that North Korea would feel threatened by a film that starred comedic actors Seth Rogen and James Flacco.
Oops.
Instead of correctly saying the actor's name, James Franco, Obama must have had his eye on the Baltimore Ravens' upcoming game, as he used the last name of the team's quarterback, Joe Flacco.
As one would imagine, the slip-up had quite the reaction from the signal-caller.
Don't Pull off Kids If They Can't Handle It
2 of 13As sports fans, we've heard plenty of analogies and sayings that bring a quick smirk to our faces because of their weird similarities to inappropriate things.
And here's one more to add to the list.
While talking about Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's handling of younger players, Sky Sports analyst Gary Neville used some words that caused some childish reactions from his colleagues, with studio hosts chuckling as soon as he said it.
Even after Neville's slip of the young happening early in this video, the guys are still giggling a minute or so after.
It's Not His Play, but His Smile We'll Remember
3 of 13I know that this, technically, might not count as a total sound-bite fail, but it has to go down as one of the worst quotes from an athlete ever, right?
Talking to ESPN's Linda Cohn last year during a promotional interview for Upper Deck, former big-leaguer Ken Griffey Jr. didn't appear he wanted to answer questions.
Showing little enthusiasm from the beginning by blankly staring into the camera, Junior ends the awkward interview by mocking, well, the entire conversation, saying that it was his smile that fans would remember the most from his playing days.
Uh, did the dude forget that he was the most dominating player during his heyday, winning an AL MVP Award, leading the league in homers four times and, when eligible, will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer?
For a guy who accomplished so much—and showed no personality whatsoever in this instance—he sure doesn't seem like he enjoys smiling.
To his credit, Griffey did apologize to Cohn.
Gary Andersen Needs to Get His Beavers in a Row
4 of 13
New Oregon State University head football coach Gary Andersen might want to take a few tips from another guy who coaches at a school with the letters OSU, Urban Meyer, and not reference a university's No. 1 rival.
Unfortunately, Andersen got a little scared by having a quick slip of the tongue, though.
During his introductory press conference as the team's new leader, Andersen said that to build a program, one needs to "get their ducks in a row," which caused a few gasps from the crowd and an explanation from the guy after saying it.
Rivalries run deep in sports, and Andersen found out just how bitter the one between the Beavers and the Ducks really is.
Boom Goes the Dynamite
5 of 13It's just too good—or bad, depending on who you are.
In an effort to prove that he had what it took to be the next, great sportscaster, former Ball State University student Brian Collins blew it up during this on-camera performance.
Blew it up like dynamite, baby!
Stumbling over his words and struggling to keep up with the highlights, Collins had one saying that is forever remembered—"boom goes the dynamite."
While it might be considered the worst sportscast ever, his catch phrase is absolutely brilliant, with fans and, yes, even other announcers referencing the broadcast as a joke.
Joe Namath Wants a Smooch
6 of 13He'll forever be known for the bold guarantee prior to his New York Jets upsetting the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, but Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath is remembered for something he would rather forget to younger generations—"I want to kiss you."
Saying the words on live television during an interview with Suzy Kolber during a Jets preseason game in 2003, Broadway Joe turned things awkward, weird and uncomfortable in a hurry.
The guy was known as being a flamboyant playboy during his football days, but seeing him mack on Kolber probably reminded us all of the weird uncle who shows up during the holidays.
Namath would later apologize, saying he was "full of some Christmas cheer, certainly too much."
Metta World Peace Is Too Sexy for His Cat
7 of 13I know there are charismatic players in the NBA today, but none of them have the personality that one-time All-Star Metta World Peace had while he laced 'em up during his 15 years in the league.
Considered one of the best defenders—and loose cannons—of his generation, World Peace used that to his advantage on the court by intimidating opposing players, yet proved he was quite the humorist during multiple interviews after games.
Following a reporter asking MWP how he was able to come back from injury in just 12 days, the player paused, thought what he should say, and actually replied with the words, "I'm just too sexy for my cat" after all of that.
Silence.
It made absolutely no sense, did get a few awkward laughs from reporters and proved that World Peace is about as unpredictable as everyone thought he was—referencing a Right Said Fred song during an interview.
Yo Soy Fiesta
8 of 13I don't care what your opinion is of the guy or how you feel about his team, because New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is, hands down, the king of sound bites.
And, as most of us know, one of his most famous came following the team's victory in the AFC Championship Game back in 2012, as Gronk became a Spanglish version of himself during an interview with ESPN Deportes.
Gronkowski is known for entertaining, so seeing his responses by lightening the mood here is what makes him so damn fun to pay attention to—even if us fans would prefer he just sticks to English.
Joey Barton Will Do What?!?
9 of 13Poor Philippe Senderos.
The Swiss national and Aston Villa club team defender had no idea that his description of a rough opponent, Joey Barton, would turn into a laugh fest at his expense.
I mean, anyone who has watched Barton play knows that he is aggressive and relentless in his tackling, but I'm not sure anyone knew he would do this (please see video) when he was going up against an opponent.
John Elway Thanks Himself
10 of 13As bad as it was to watch his Denver Broncos lose to the Indianapolis Colts at home in the divisional round of the playoffs—who were previously undefeated in Mile High—it was a little worse the following day.
That's when the team's general manager and executive vice president, John Elway, stepped to the podium to address the media following his decision to can head coach John Fox, planning to answer any questions from reporters.
Stepping up confidently, Elway brashly thanked John Elway, though, having a major slip of the tongue that caused a few chuckles among media members in the audience.
So much for being sincere, huh?
Carlton Bragg Confuses UK for KU
11 of 13I'll go ahead and say this—whether top-20 recruit Carlton Bragg decided on the University of Kentucky or Kansas University, he was going to make a good choice.
After all, those two schools are both blue-blood programs that are constantly competing for national titles and sending their players to the NBA.
Still, it had to be a bit embarrassing when he got UK confused for KU, pronouncing the words, "University of Kentucky," yet pulling out a Kansas hat.
Bragg immediately recognized his mistake and covered his face with his hands, but it looks like the kid's decision was, literally, down to the last second.
Allen Iverson's Just Talkin' Bout Practice
12 of 13One of the craziest sound bites in the history of sports, when former baller Allen Iverson was, "just talkin' 'bout practice," to reporters back in 2002, he probably didn't imagine that we would still be talking about it 13 years later.
Yet, here it is, on full display.
With the former All-Star saying the word "practice" more than 20 times over the course of the video, it's clear that the answer to The Answer's game wasn't practice makes perfect—which, I think, he makes pretty clear.
Blake Griffin Likes Potty Humor
13 of 13Thank you, Blake Griffin.
You've proven that, after teammate Chris Paul accidentally said the word "dick" during a press conference that, no matter how old you are or how professional you're supposed to act, potty humor is always funny.
Just as media members and Griffin think things are running smoothly during a postgame press conference in a game earlier this year, the two players lose their composure, showing that boys will always be boys.
It looks like we all have something in common with an NBA All-Star—our dirty minds.
