Sunday Recap

The top forwards in La Liga didn't disappoint on Sunday, as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Carlos Bacca and Mario Mandzukic all found the back of the net in their respective Week 19 fixtures.

Gareth Bale added a third in Real Madrid's 3-0 win over Getafe, and top scorer Ronaldo scored twice, setting yet another record as he became the player to reach the 28-goal mark the fastest, via RonaldoStats:

Los Blancos hadn't started 2015 the way they ended the previous year, but Sunday's comfortable win should at least silence the critics momentarily. The team looked every bit as dominant as they did during their win streak, not giving Getafe an inch of space in midfield.

As shared by Goal, manager Carlo Ancelotti saw the same thing from his squad:

Not to be outdone by his eternal rival, Messi bagged himself a hat-trick in Barcelona's 4-0 rout of Deportivo La Coruna, including a headed effort. According to WhoScored.com, he and Ronaldo have dominated that category in the past few seasons:

Barcelona ran all over the Galicians, with Sidnei putting the ball in his own net to complete the trashing.

The Catalans move back to within a point of the La Liga lead, although Real still hold a match in hand.

Mandzukic and Raul Garcia both scored in Atletico Madrid's 2-0 win over Granada, ensuring last year's champions remain right on the heels of the two Spanish giants.

The Atleti didn't look their best but came through when they needed to, ensuring the three points stayed at the Calderon. They'll have to be at their best for their next fixture, however, via Barcastuff:

Bacca also got in on the fun in Sevilla's 2-0 win over Malaga, while Elche booked a crucial 1-0 win over Levante, moving out of the relegation zone following the result.

Saturday Recap

Valencia needed a late winner from Alvaro Negredo to get past Almeria on Saturday, winning 3-2 at home to keep the pressure on La Liga's top three teams, who will all play on Sunday.

Tomer Hemed had scored twice for the visitors to equalise going into the final stages of the match, but the hosts battled and pressured until they finally found the opening, and the match-winner told Valencia's official Twitter channel how happy he was the team got to end the first half of the season on a high note:

Daniel Parejo had given the hosts an early lead before Hemed struck a first time, and the Israel international was on point to wipe out Rodrigo's 28th-minute goal as well.

The second half saw play go up and down the pitch for a couple of minutes before Valencia increased the pressure, but they had to wait until the 83rd minute to find a winner.

The former Manchester City ace came off the bench to guide a bullet header past Almeria goalkeeper Julian, sparking wild celebrations at the Mestalla. BeIN Sports USA's David Cartlidge noted the fans couldn't have been excited about the team's performance:

David Moyes and Real Sociedad suffered a home defeat against Rayo Vallecano, with Manucho scoring the only goal of the match inside the final 10 minutes.

Real Madrid TV's Phil Kitromilides did not like what he saw from the Basques and noted the appointment of the former Manchester United boss hasn't brought along much change at the Anoeta:

The home fans—deservedly—booed the players off the pitch, and Sociedad's lead over the relegation-threatened teams has now sunk to just three points.

The Basques had a bad day all around, as Athletic Bilbao suffered a 2-0 defeat at Villarreal. Like their neighbours, Athletic are going through a rough campaign, and while both don't look like likely relegation candidates, the current losing trend is worrying.

Espanyol beat Celta Vigo 1-0 in the final match of the day.

Sunday will see Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid take to the pitch just hours apart, as the La Liga title race is quickly turning into a tight battle set to last until the end of the season.

Friday Recap

Cordoba and Eibar played out a 1-1 draw during Friday's lone match, an eventful affair that ultimately fizzled out in the final 10 minutes.

Florin Andone shot himself into the record books by scoring within the opening 10 seconds of the match, taking full advantage of a defensive miscue and prodding the ball home from close range.

According to MisterChip (English), the Romanian scored the fourth-fastest goal in la Liga history:

It was also the second-fastest goal of the season among all European top leagues, via OptaJose:

Eibar came into the match as slight favourites, chasing La Liga's top teams in the hunt for a Europa League ticket, but they failed to muster more than a handful of chances in the first half.

The action was physical and mainly played out in the centre of the pitch, with the hosts content to defend their lead in search of a third straight win.

After 45 minutes, they appeared to be well on their way, per AS English:

The visitors came out with more attacking intentions in the second half and were given a lifeline when Eduard Campabadal was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

Their hopes were short-lived, however, as their man-advantage was wiped out within 60 seconds, courtesy of a red card for Federico Piovaccari. La Liga Time couldn't believe what they were seeing:

Eibar eventually managed a deserved equaliser through Mikel Arruabarrena, but fans hoping for a wild final 10 minutes were left empty-handed, as neither team was able to push their opponents against the wall. A 1-1 draw was the logical conclusion.

Manager Gaizka Garitano saw Cordoba as a direct rival coming into the match, as his side went looking for "more than three points," via Inside Spanish Football's Jamie Kemp. One has to assume he will be utterly disappointed with the final result:

"

A good deal of our success comes through people that have been left out of contention, but continue to do a great job during the week. The game at Córdoba will be a difficult one though, as they are in a good moment in the grand scheme of their season.

They are confident and they’ve brought in a few new faces. They represent a direct rival in our aims to stay in this league, so it means that more than three points are at stake. We are hungry to finish the first round of the season with 29 points.

"

Instead, Eibar will finish with 28, still far more than anyone would have guessed at the start of the campaign. The Basques look like a safe bet to survive the drop at the midway point of the campaign, an incredible performance for such a small club.

Cordoba's battle against relegation remains ongoing, and Friday's result means they now have a two-point buffer over Levante and Almeria.
