Most Dramatic Moments of the Week
The NFL may have dominated headlines this past weekend, but action around the NBA and NHL also provided plenty of drama in the sports world.
Between the NFL playoffs, the College Football Playoff National Championship, the NBA and NHL regular seasons, college hoops inching toward March Madness, and more, many different things are going on right now.
Let's take a look at the most dramatic moments from the past week in sports.
Kentucky Survives...Again
1 of 9Kentucky's basketball team is indisputably the best in the nation, and its undefeated record is a testament to that.
They have had two scares against inferior teams in the past couple of weeks, most notably a double-overtime thriller against Texas A&M.
Kentucky's starters shot an abysmal 11-of-44 from the field, letting a mediocre Texas A&M stay in the game and push it into overtime.
In the first overtime, neither team could pull away, as defenses stifled and shots would not fall. Finally, Kentucky pulled ahead and squeaked out a 70-64 win.
Green Bay Outlasts Dallas
2 of 9
This game had so much buildup that it seemed almost impossible for the contest to live up to the hype.
But each quarter was more riveting than the last, and the ending was absolutely sensational. Green Bay and Dallas are arguably the two most notorious NFL franchises, and with the game taking place at the iconic Lambeau Field, the stage was set for a classic.
Aaron Rodgers' injured calf was another major storyline, and although he did appear a bit hobbled, the veteran got the job done with 316 passing yards and three touchdowns.
The ending was spectacular and controversial and everything a fan could ever want from a drama standpoint. It deserves its own slide.
Dez Bryant's Catch Overturned
3 of 9On fourth down, with the clock winding down and the Cowboys trailing by five points, Tony Romo chucked the ball toward the left sideline.
Dez Bryant, one of the league's best receivers, went up and seemed to make one of the best catches in recent memory to keep Dallas' hopes alive.
But then the officials reviewed the catch and ruled that the ground had dislodged the ball and that the ball had moved during the course of the catch, meaning it was incomplete.
This turned out to be the deciding play of the game, as Green Bay hung on for an incredible playoff victory.
Real Defeats Atletico
4 of 9
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have one of the best rivalries in all of soccer right now, with Atletico's recent resurgence making it a formidable contender.
In the Copa del Rey round-of-16 matchup between the cross-city rivals, Atletico won the first match last week by a score of 2-0, meaning it had a two-goal aggregate advantage heading into Thursday's contest.
The aggregate score made the game less dramatic, as Atletico needed just a tie or a minor loss, but the intensity was sensational for all 90 minutes.
Fernando Torres scored against his old team at the beginning of the game, and the two sides fought to a heated 2-2 tie. Atletico is advancing to the Copa del Rey quarterfinals.
Ohio State Runs Over Oregon
5 of 9
This game did not have the down-to-the-wire, last-second drama some fans (including myself) may have been hoping for, but it was far closer than the 42-20 final score indicates.
The teams traded scores in the first half, but the Buckeyes pulled ahead 21-10 before Oregon closed the gap to 28-20 heading into the fourth quarter.
But then Urban Meyer's team simply took over, and it was amazing to watch the Buckeyes finish off a talented Oregon squad.
Ezekiel Elliott was simply dominant, rushing for four touchdowns to lead Ohio State to victory, while Meyer's defense shut down Marcus Mariota and the rest of the Ducks' potent offense.
Canadiens Come Back in Style
6 of 9The Montreal Canadiens are one of the NHL's best squads this season, but they needed a lot of late-game magic to take down the meddling Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night.
Columbus scored once in the first period to go up and then added another goal roughly halfway through the third to seemingly put Montreal away.
But then some costly penalties and remarkable work by Montreal's power play led to the Canadiens scoring an incredible three power-play goals in less than four minutes.
Max Pacioretty scored the game-winner, his second goal of the night, with just under five minutes remaining to silence the Columbus crowd and get his team the win.
NFL Coaching Carousel Winds Down
7 of 9
The biggest drama in sports over the past few days has arguably taken place off the playing field and in the front offices of a number of NFL franchises.
It has been a whirlwind of firings, hirings and speculation, and only some of the dust has settled thus far, with Rex Ryan's move to Buffalo being the headliner.
The New York Jets have replaced Ryan with former Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. The Oakland Raiders landed Jack Del Rio, Jim Tomsula was promoted to head coach in San Francisco, and the entire Denver Broncos coaching staff was shockingly released after their playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
This leaves a number of vacancies, and it's impossible to predict who is going to end up where at this stage. But there will be no shortage of drama.
Clippers Rally Late
8 of 9
The Los Angeles Clippers and the Portland Trail Blazers are two of the best teams in the Western Conference, and their battle Wednesday night looked like a conference championship game.
The intensity throughout the game was palpable. A mere point separated the two teams at halftime, and they started the fourth quarter all tied up.
The Blazers began to pull away and had a six-point lead at one point. But the Clippers rallied late behind Jamal Crawford's sharpshooting and sealed the deal with a DeAndre Jordan block with barely over a minute left on the clock.
Patriots Hold Off Ravens
9 of 9
Tom Brady proved why he is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time this past weekend, and the New England Patriots showed their resiliency in an incredible comeback win against the Baltimore Ravens.
Brady and the Pats found themselves down by 14 points twice during the game and came back to erase the deficit each time.
They eventually pulled ahead with a little over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and then held on to complete the come-from-behind win.
Brady was unbelievable, throwing 50 total passes and completing 33 of them for 367 yards and three touchdowns.
