Georgia Football: 5 Players Poised to Break Out in 2015

Brian JonesJan 12, 2015

In eight months, the Georgia Bulldogs kick off the 2015 season against Louisiana-Monroe at Sanford Stadium. That may seem like a long time from now, but there’s no doubt the upcoming season will be here before we can blink.

That means the Bulldogs will have new expectations and challenges to meet and overcome. This also means some players will have breakout seasons that will help the Bulldogs achieve their goals in 2015.

In 2014, Nick Chubb, Damian Swann and Quincy Mauger were a few of the guys who had breakout seasons. So which guys will break out in 2015?

Let’s take a look at five guys who are capable of doing just that.

QB Brice Ramsey

1 of 5

Chances are that Brice Ramsey will be the starting quarterback in 2015 unless Faton Bauta or Jacob Park has a great run in the spring and fall camp.

With a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in Brian Schottenheimer, Ramsey has a chance to learn from a guy who has played football in the SEC and has a lot of coaching experience in the NFL.

In limited action in 2014, Ramsey threw for 333 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He showed he has a strong arm and good pocket presence.

Schottenheimer will play to Ramsey's strengths, and the signal-caller should be able to put up bigger passing numbers than Hutson Mason did last season. And having Nick Chubb and Sony Michel in the backfield will help Ramsey see even more success, especially when it comes to play action.

RB Sony Michel

Speaking of Michel, he had a solid freshman campaign with 410 yards on 64 carries and six total touchdowns. However, due to a shoulder injury, he missed five games, so those numbers could have been better.

Michel will be 100 percent healthy at the start of the 2015 season, and there is no reason he can’t get close to 1,000 rushing yards. He has speed and elusiveness and is a good receiver in the backfield. He and Chubb could make up the best running tandem in the country if they can both stay healthy.

TE Jeb Blazevich

3 of 5

Many thought that Jay Rome was going to have a breakout season in 2014. That was not the case because Jeb Blazevich was able to produce at the tight end position, catching 18 passes for 269 yards.

With a new quarterback and a new offensive coordinator, Blazevich should double, possibly triple, those numbers because he has great size (6'5", 232 lbs) and hands and knows how to get open. A quarterback’s best friend is the tight end, especially in a pro-style offense. If Ramsey is the starter next year, he will look for Blazevich a lot, and there will no disappointment from both parties.

Lorenzo Carter

4 of 5

Lorenzo Carter was a key contributor on defense this past season, notching 4.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss in limited action.

And while those are great numbers for a true freshman, he has a chance to vastly improve them, especially with having a year under Jeremy Pruitt’s scheme.

The only problem is Jordan Jenkins and Leonard Floyd will return next season, and they are the two starting outside linebackers. So Carter will have to rotate with both players, which won’t be an issue. Based on the way he played last season, the coaches will be sure to put him in as much as they can.

Carter has a good chance to be what Jarvis Jones was in 2011 and 2012. He has great speed off the edge and has enough size (6'6", 237 lbs) to take on any offensive tackle in the SEC.

CB Aaron Davis

5 of 5

One of the players who struggled this past season was Aaron Davis. At the start of the season, the freshman cornerback had trouble maintaining coverage with opposing receivers and did not make the impact plays that Swann, Mauger and Dominick Sanders did.

However, before the 2014 season, Davis had not played football in two years, and he started to come on as the season winded down. So 2015 sets up to be a great season for him.

He plays with great discipline, works hard and learns from his mistakes. No other player on the roster has had a tougher road to get to Athens, and Davis has no intention of failing.
