Cowboys vs. Packers: Final Odds, Spread Predictions for 2015 NFC Divisional Game

Brian MaziqueJan 11, 2015

Despite questions about the status of Aaron Rodgers' calf, the Green Bay Packers are 6.5-point favorites over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night, per Odds Shark. The two teams will meet at Lambeau Field in the NFC divisional round.

Per Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, Rodgers has a slight tear in his left calf muscle. To gain deeper perspective, Mortensen and Schefter quoted a doctor familiar with the injury.

"There's no question he will play, but there's also no question he will not be 100 percent. The question is whether he'll be 95 percent or 50 percent."

The injury forced Rodgers to miss a portion of the Packers' last regular-season game. He is listed as probable per Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

While it seems certain he will play, it is unclear how effective Rodgers will be. Obviously the way he plays will greatly impact the Packers' chances of advancing to the NFC Championship Game.

Something's Got to Give

GREEN BAY, WI - DECEMBER 28: Quarterback Aaron Rodgers #12 of the Green Bay Packers looks on during the NFL game against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field on December 28, 2014 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Green Bay Packers defeat the Detroit Lions 30-20

During the regular season, the Packers were a perfect 8-0 at home. On the flip side, the Cowboys put up a spotless record away from Cowboys Stadium.

One team's "0" must go.

Part of the reason Green Bay has been so good at home is because of Rodgers' play. The 31-year-old completed 67 percent of his passes at Lambeau Field. He's thrown 25 touchdowns there with no interceptions.

Dallas would do well to flush Rodgers from the pocket. If it can get him on the move, it could test Rodgers' mobility. How his lower-body responds will be the key to the contest. Because of the competition, Green Bay can't afford to miss a beat. The Packers will need to put points on the board and remain an offensive threat throughout.

Dallas may have the NFL's most balanced offense with the league's leading rusher DeMarco Murray, quarterback Tony Romo, wide receiver Dez Bryant and arguably the best offensive line in the league.

Shutting down the Boys isn't realistic for Green Bay, thus Rodgers will have to handle the pressure of leading his offense to match his counterpart's production.

Will the Packers Cover?

To put it plain: the answer is no.

Not only will the Packers fail to cover, they will also lose this game. This is not the normal Dallas team that underachieves. It's led by a dominant offensive line, an excellent running game and Romo.

The latter has learned how to play under control and to allow his plethora of weapons to work for him. Romo is perhaps Rodgers' stiffest competition for NFL MVP.

Romo threw just nine interceptions in 15 games to go with 34 touchdown passes. With a potentially gimpy Rodgers on the field, the Packers will struggle to keep pace offensively as Dallas' offense puts its stamp on the game.

I'm going with Dallas, 35-19.
