Atletico vs. Real: Winners and Losers from Madrid Derby
Atletico Madrid will take a 2-0 advantage to Estadio Santiago Bernabeu for the second leg of the Copa del Rey round-of-16 tie with Real, following Wednesday's victory over their local rivals.
Raul Garcia opened the scoring from a penalty won off Sergio Ramos in the 58th minute, and Jose Gimenez rose to meet Gabi's corner-kick in the 76th to round out the scoring.
The match also marked Fernando Torres' return to his old club while, perhaps surprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo started on the bench for the guests.
Overall, the derby featured several standout performances, as well as one or two that were rather less impressive.
Following are the individual winners and losers from Wednesday's contest at Estadio Vicente Calderon.
Winner: Jan Oblak, Who Kept an Important Clean Sheet for Atletico
1 of 6
Real Madrid went on the front-foot from the opening whistle and inside the first minute had the game's first goalscoring chance when Sergio Ramos rose to meet a corner-kick in the Atletico goalmouth.
Had he succeeded, it would have been the type of goal the Spain international has scored time and again over the course of his career, but on this occasion he was denied by goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Oblak, who was deputising for Miguel Angel Moya, also made important saves on Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos, but his stop on Ramos was easily his best of the night.
"Super save from Oblak as Ramos almost powers in header from a corner," analysed ESPNFC's Dermot Corrigan via Twitter.
Loser: Gareth Bale, Who Was Sloppy in Possession and Shot Selection
2 of 6
Gareth Bale won't have won any new Real Madrid fans on Wednesday.
Over the course of the 90 minutes, the Welshman touched the ball just 37 times, according to WhoScored, and conceded possession cheaply far too frequently.
In the 31st minute, for example, his giveaway to Fernando Torres led directly to Sami Khedira's yellow card, as the Germany international was forced to bring down the Atletico forward.
Then, on the cusp of half-time, he dropped deep to hit a speculative shot from distance that sailed well wide of the near post and rather summed up his night.
Winner: Lucas Hernandez, Who Acquitted Himself Well
3 of 6
Lucas Hernandez came into Wednesday's match with exactly two minutes of Primera Division experience.
An 18-year-old graduate of Atletico Madrid's academy, he was nevertheless entrusted with a starting role against Real Madrid.
He ended up acquitting himself extremely well.
It's telling that Madrid winger Gareth Bale eventually tried his luck down the opposite flank after failing to get any joy against the young left-back, who also tended to outplay Alvaro Arbeloa throughout the night.
No doubt Lucas, based on this performance, is one to watch for the future.
Winner: Raul Garcia, Who Drew a Penalty and Scored from the Spot
4 of 6
Raul Garcia put in an all-action display on Wednesday that went some distance toward securing Atletico Madrid's derby victory.
In the 57th minute, he drew a foul off Sergio Ramos inside the Real Madrid box and proceeded, despite Ramos' and Alvaro Arbeloa's best attempts to distract him, to convert from 12 yards.
The versatile 28-year-old also threw himself into four tackles, according to WhoScored, and easily outmuscled the likes of Toni Kroos and Isco when the occasion required.
Loser: Sergio Ramos, Who Had a Rare Off Night
5 of 6
Uncharacteristically, Sergio Ramos failed to score from an unmarked header and also conceded a potentially catastrophic penalty.
Less than a minute had ticked off the clock when his headed attempt from a corner was stopped nicely by Jan Oblak, but throughout the remainder of the first half he continued to press high up the pitch as Real Madrid searched for the opening goal.
It didn't come. As it turned out, it was Ramos who allowed Atletico Madrid the chance to open the scoring just shy of the hour-mark when, inside his own area, he brought Raul Garcia to ground.
The latter made no mistake from 12 yards, and Ramos was booked for the foul.
Ramos was quoted by George Ankers of Goal.com from an interview with AS as saying, "I'm not going to talk about controversial issues and certainly not that incident. The only thing I will say is that, with every passing day, I prefer the English Premier League."
He added, "What am I talking about? Obviously not about the ball-boys...the style of play, refereeing. People enjoy watching that competition. When one loses, it’s easy to focus on the refereeing decisions."
Winner: Jose Gimenez, Who Headed Atletico into a 2-0 Lead
6 of 6
Lucas Hernandez wasn't Atletico's only teenager to start Wednesday's match.
Lining up alongside Diego Godin was fellow Uruguay international Jose Gimenez, who just happened to emulate the former when he scored his side's second goal of the night.
Putting himself in position to receive Gabi's corner-kick in the 76th minute, the 19-year-old headed a well-placed effort into the back of the net that doubled Atletico's aggregate advantage.
"Cracking Gimenez header," tweeted Zonal Marking's Michael Cox. "Godin would be proud of that one."
