Barcelona Announce They Will Hold Club President Elections at Season's End

Tom SunderlandJan 7, 2015

Barcelona have confirmed that following Andoni Zubizarreta's sacking as director of football, the club will hold elections for a new president in 2015, a year ahead of schedule.

The club's official Twitter account quoted current president Josep Maria Bartomeu in announcing the election will take place at the end of the 2014-15 campaign, with the board set to undergo further change:

Barcelona also posted a release on their official website:

"

President Jose Maria Bartomeu has announced that he will be calling Presidential elections at the end of this season. Bartomeu explained he’d taken the decision 'to lower the tension at the Club right now' – a tension which is 'disproportionate and doesn’t reflect the reality of the Club'. The President reminded the media at his press conference of the Club’s buoyant economic situation and the Espain Barça project, approved by members in a referendum last year.

Bartomeu also announced that he will be a candidate for the post and called on all other future aspirants to respect 'fair play' and get behind the team for what is left of this season.

"

Zubizarreta's departure from the club was quickly followed by Carles Puyol resigning from his role as assistant director, with all apparently not well among the Blaugrana hierarchy.

Guillem Balague attests to this notion, describing the current tension surrounding those in control as "unbearable" and asserting that change is certainly needed:

The indecision would appear to have trickled onto the pitch as well, with Luis Enrique's maiden campaign as Camp Nou helmsman not going as seamlessly as hoped, already suffering three La Liga defeats this term.

With that lull in morale, it appears 2015 may signal a revolution among the club's ranks from top to bottom.

Although, Barca's transfer ban stands to disrupt any marked transition among the playing staff.
