Georgia Football: These 5 Early Enrollees Could Make Huge Impacts in 2015
National signing day may still be four weeks away, but the Georgia Bulldogs' 2015 class is already making an impact on campus.
According to Seth Emerson of Columbus's Ledger-Enquirer, one transfer from UAB, one junior college transfer and six recent high school graduates enrolled in classes for the spring semester on Monday. And while the biggest name in this class—5-star defensive tackle Trent Thompson and 5-star athlete Terry Godwin—won't sign until the first week in February, several of the early enrollees are primed for strong debut seasons in Athens.
Here's a closer look at five early enrollees who could make huge impacts for the Bulldogs in 2015.
Natrez Patrick, Defensive End
1 of 5
Vitals
- Height: 6'3"
- Weight: 259 lbs.
- Previous School: Mays High School (Atlanta, Georgia)
- Relevant Rankings: 4-Star and No. 81 overall in the 247Sports Composite
Where He Fits
Georgia isn't exactly hurting for pass-rushers. Leonard Floyd and Jordan Jenkins, who both had NFL opportunities, have opted to return to Athens in 2015, and rising sophomore Lorenzo Carter had a phenomenal season as a freshman in 2014.
But Patrick is too talented to ignore. He's got college-ready size, and his athleticism is counterintuitive for a man his size. He boasts a quick first step and fantastic closing speed.
Much like Ray Drew, Patrick could ultimately play almost anywhere on the defensive line. At 260 pounds, he could be an extra pass-rusher from an interior spot on a clear passing down. In short-yardage situations, he could even line up as a space-eating outside linebacker used to hold the edge.
Defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt will find ways to use him in 2015.
Jonathan Ledbetter, Defensive Lineman
2 of 5
Vitals
- Height: 6'4"
- Weight: 265 lbs.
- Previous School: Tucker High School (Tucker, Georgia)
- Relevant Rankings: 4-Star and No. 59 overall in the 247Sports Composite
Where He Fits
Unlike Patrick, Jonathan Ledbetter won't ever contend for any playing time at a linebacker position. But like Patrick, he's versatile enough to move along the defensive line.
Though he plays most naturally at defensive end, his most dominant traits—his size, strength and ability to win at the point of attack—also lend themselves to the defensive tackle position. If he adds much size over the coming months, he'll likely settle on the line's interior, and given his slightly slower first step and burst, that might be the best long-term fit for him as well.
Chuks Amaechi, Inside Linebacker
3 of 5
Vitals
- Height: 6'3"
- Weight: 220 lbs.
- Previous School: Arizona Western College
- Relevant Rankings: 3-Star and No. 63 in the 247Sports Junior College Composite
Where He Fits
Amarlo Herrera and Ramik Wilson have exhausted their eligibility, and they've taken their 587 combined career tackles with them. This means middle linebacker spots are wide open in Athens.
Tim Kimbrough and Reggie Carter played well in these spots in 2014, but the Bulldogs have very little depth at the position. Ryne Rankin could step up and Detric Bing-Dukes could switch positions, but thus far, Rankin has played primarily at special teams, and Bing-Dukes has trained with the fullbacks.
Accordingly, there are snaps up for grab. Kimbrough and Carter have the inside track to starting spots, but expect Amaechi to be third in the rotation. He played very well at the junior college level, and his early enrollment will help him adjust to the speed of SEC football.
Jarvis Wilson, Defensive Back
4 of 5
Vitals
- Height: 6'2"
- Weight: 197 lbs.
- Previous School: Tupelo High School (Tupelo, Mississippi)
- Relevant Rankings: 3-Star and No. 835 in the 247Sports Composite
Where He Fits
Jarvis Wilson has flown relatively under the radar within this class. Outside of Georgia, Mississippi State was the only other SEC school to offer him a scholarship, per 247Sports. But that's kind of how Pruitt likes to do things.
In 2014, he turned Dominick Sanders, a comparable recruit, into a full-time starter as a true freshman. And like Sanders, Wilson (who's listed as a safety) may actually settle more at the cornerback position.
Rusty Mansell of 247Sports said one of his sources compared Wilson to former Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner thanks to his size. If Wilson is that good in coverage, he'll play right away.
Michael Barnett, Defensive End
5 of 5
Vitals
- Height: 6'5"
- Weight: 258 lbs.
- Previous School: Woodland High School (Dorchester, South Carolina)
- Relevant Rankings: 4-Star and No. 255 overall in the 247Sports Composite
Where He Fits
Barnett is one of the more raw prospects in Georgia's 2015 signing class. His frame is hard to ignore, but he's also not the most physical prospect. In fairness, he's been able to rely on his height and length (his arms stretch for days) for most of his career.
His first semester in Athens will be crucial to his success. If he can buy into the teaching of defensive line coach Tracy Rocker early, he could be an absolute star. He won't test off the charts at combines, but he stands to learn a lot about the use of leverage, momentum and hands.
