Could Jim Tressel Be Thinking About Retirement?
Let's try and make something out of nothing.
Last week, a Columbus Dispatch reporter attempted to dissect some comments made by Jim Tressel. That happens just about every time the coach opens his mouth. Usually, everything that he says is carefully planned and well thought-out. It also rarely has any real meaning.
Coach Tressel is a master of saying a whole lot of nothing. He will rave about the potent offense of Youngstown State. He will express great concern about the smothering defense of Troy.
In a world where coaches, athletes and public figures make fools of themselves on a daily basis, Tressel is always in complete control when the cameras start rolling.
During the interview session, Tressel was reminded that Joe Paterno was entering his 60th year of coaching. Would that be an important milestone for Tressel?
Tressel responded, "Not that I don't want to get to 40, and I'm already at 35. I don't know if I'm sitting out there thinking I've got 25 more good years in me."
His current contract runs through 2012. However, I would certainly think Tressel can coach at Ohio State as long as he wants.
Are people making something out of nothing? Could Tressel really be thinking about retirement?
Tressel also cited one of Shakespeare's sonnets during the interview.
"It talks about being consumed with activity and goals and moving on, but really that ends up consuming you, that ended up aging you."
One of two things is going on:
- Tressel is considering retirement once his contract is up.
- He is sitting in his easy chair with a grin on his face, knowing he got the best of the media...again.
