Bell Capital Cup 2015: Score and Twitter Reaction from Russell vs. West End
The Bell Capital Cup ending in spectacular fashion Friday in Ottawa as The West End Firebirds defeated the Russell Warriors 1-0 to capture the Atom House A championship.
Friday's title game for nine- and 10-year-old players took place at Ottawa's Canadian Tire Centre, which is the home of the NHL's Ottawa Senators. The final championship encounter of the tournament was certainly fitting for such a marquee venue.
According to the Bell Capital Cup's official Twitter account, it took double overtime before the Atom House A division could be decided:
In the end, it was Bruno Lemire who beat Russell goaltender Tanner Smith after a feed from Braden Faulds, per PointStreak.com.
Smith and West End backstop Jett Holden were unbeatable for much of the contest; however, an eventual breakthrough was inevitable.
The game-winning goal was Lemire's third of the tournament, according to PointStreak.com, and it was undoubtedly the biggest. Faulds had previously scored five goals of his own, but it was his first assist that loomed largest.
Although they were the final 2015 Bell Capital Cup champions to be crowned, the Firebirds were far from the first, as pointed out by the Canadian Tire Centre's official Twitter account:
In addition to that, the Bell Capital Cup was grateful for the 260 teams from across the globe that decided to make the trip and participate:
Senators mascot, Spartacat, also chimed in and praised those who made the fantastic event possible:
While West End went out on a high note by winning its division, each and every team that took part gained great memories. According to Tim Baines of The Ottawa Sun, that was the goal of the Bell Capital Cup in the eyes of tournament general manager Scott Lawryk.
"Being a kid and having played minor hockey, you remember going to the tournaments. As a kid, you don't see what goes on in the background, what the volunteers and organizers are doing. This is an opportunity for us to give back to the hockey community. It's come full circle where we enjoyed those events as kids; now we can help kids enjoy the events.
"
Every indication is that the participants immensely enjoyed the event, so the organizers certainly accomplished their mission.
The Bell Capital Cup has played host to many future NHL stars during its 16 years of existence including John Tavares of the New York Islanders and Matt Duchene of the Colorado Avalanche, per Baines.
It is impossible to say if any of the players who competed in the Atom House A championship or any other divisions will reach that level, but they are clearly on the right track.
The Bell Capital Cup is the premier Canadian hockey tournament for young players, and they put on an excellent show Friday.
