Georgia Football: 5 New Year's Resolutions for the Bulldogs

Brian JonesJan 1, 2015

2014 has come to an end, and the Georgia Bulldogs were able to go out in style with a 37-14 victory over Louisville in the Belk Bowl. The Bulldogs finished the 2014 season with a 10-3 record and have a chance to finish in the Top 10 of the polls.

Now it’s on to 2015, and like every offseason, the expectations for the Bulldogs will be high. Based on the players that are coming back for next season, they will have a chance to win over 10 games in 2015.

But they will need some things to go their way. Here’s a look at five New Year’s resolutions for the Bulldogs.

Find an Offensive Coordinator

1 of 5

One of the first things Georgia needs to do is find an offensive coordinator since Mike Bobo has left to be the head coach at Colorado State.

John Lilly called the plays during the Belk Bowl, and the Bulldogs scored 27 points. He’s a strong candidate, especially considering that he's been on the coaching staff since 2008.

Another candidate who is on the Bulldogs coaching staff is Bryan McClendon. He’s the running backs coach and has been the recruiting coordinator this past year.

Other candidates are Billy Napier (Alabama receivers coach), Kurt Roper (Florida offensive coordinator) and Eddie Gran (Cincinnati offensive coordinator). Whoever the Bulldogs choose, the weapons will be there for that person to be successful in a hurry.

Keep the Recruits

As of right now, the Bulldogs have 25 recruits committed to their 2015 class, and they are looking for a few more to be set for national signing day on Feb. 4.

But what’s more important is that they don’t lose the commits they already have, especially with Bobo gone.

The recruiting class features defensive tackle Trent Thompson and athlete Terry Godwin. Both players are the best at their position according to 247Sports, and both have flirted with other schools.

Because both players are longtime commits, odds are they won’t jump ship by signing day. But the Bulldogs need to show both players and the rest of the class that they are still the same team even without Bobo and nothing will change when it comes to scheme.

Find an Elite Receiver

Justin Scott-Wesley

A healthy Malcolm Mitchell and Justin Scott-Wesley will help bolster the receiving corps in 2015, but Georgia needs an elite receiver that can get separation from defenders and be able to go deep.

The best candidate is Godwin. He has great hands and has the speed to go deep, but he’s also a great defensive back, as he was named to Georgia's all-state team by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Van Jefferson and Darius Slayton are two more committed players who could see some action right away.

When it’s all said and done, Mitchell and Scott-Wesley need to be the players they were in 2012. If that happens, then the passing game will be much improved, and that will make the offense more dangerous.

Find Two Inside Linebackers

Ramik Wilson

The linebackers were the strength of the Bulldogs defense this past season, but for next season the team will have to find two linebackers to man the middle as Ramik Wilson and Amarlo Herrera will graduate this year.

The two leading candidates are Reggie Carter and Tim Kimbrough. Both saw a good amount of action this past season, and both were able hold their own.

But the coaches could always move Jordan Jenkins to inside linebacker and have Lorenzo Carter and Leonard Floyd play outside linebacker. Jenkins could match up with either Kimbrough or Carter.

The Bulldogs also got a commitment from UAB transfer Jake Ganus, who led the Blazers with 93 tackles in 2014. But he can also play safety, which will be the likely spot for him because of his size (6'2", 225).

Georgia has options at inside linebacker, but matching the production Herrera and Wilson had the last couple of years will be difficult.

Win the SEC

This is an obvious resolution, but in order for the Bulldogs to get to where they want to be at the end of the season, they have to get to SEC Championship Game and win it.

They were one game away from reaching the title game this past season, and they were five yards away from winning it in 2012. It’s time for Georgia to take the next step and be on top of the conference.

The Bulldogs will lose key players like Wilson, Herrera, Hutson Mason and Damian Swann, but the core group of Jenkins, Floyd, Nick Chubb and Sony Michel that helped them get to 10 wins will return. There is no reason the Bulldogs can’t be a favorite to win the SEC East, especially when they will have one of the better rushing attacks in the country.
