Premier League Table: Updated 2014 EPL Standings Following Matchday 19 Results
The Premier League was back in action again on Sunday just two days after the 10 Boxing Day games with the top four all failing to win as the packed Christmas period took its toll.
Manchester United were held 0-0 by Tottenham in the day's early game before Chelsea and Southampton shared the spoils and Manchester City were pegged back from 2-0 up to draw 2-2 with Burnley at home.
The big winners in terms of league position were Arsenal on Sunday as they beat West Ham 2-1 to move into fifth and tied on points with fourth-placed Saints, while bottom-of-the-table Leicester picked up the first win since September with a 1-0 away victory over Hull.

Monday Update

Liverpool produced a confident performance in the final Premier League match of the year, beating Swansea City 4-1. Two goals from Adam Lallana, an Alberto Moreno opener and an own goal from Jonjoe Shelvey were enough to give the Reds victory; Gylfi Sigurdsson bagged for the visitors.
In truth, it looked abundantly clear from the off the way this game was going to go. Liverpool began the match with much more purpose and they were rewarded for some prolonged pressure as Moreno tucked home Jordan Henderson’s cross.
As we can see here per Match Zone, it was a fine team move from Liverpool:
Swansea’s defending did leave much to be desired however, and having got plenty on the Spaniard’s shot, Lukasz Fabianski will have been disappointed not to have kept it out. But things were to get even worse for the Polish goalkeeper after the break.
Under minimal pressure, Fabianski kicked the ball straight into Lallana, who knew nothing about it as the ball ricocheted off him and into the unguarded net. Sky Sports MNF gives us an indication of how just how embarrassing a blunder it was by the goalkeeper:
To their credit, Swansea came back into the match almost immediately as Sigurdsson tucked home from close range. But it was only temporary reprieve for the Welsh outfit as Lallana scored a goal of real class.

The former Southampton man finished off a fine team move by shimmying past two Swansea defenders on the edge of the box and finishing low past Fabianski. Bleacher Report’s Karl Matchett paid tribute to the goal that restored Liverpool’s two-goal cushion:
Shelvey was enduring a very difficult evening at the home of his former employers and was lucky not to see red for an elbow on Emre Can in the first period. And his miserable game was capped off midway through the second half when he was unable to prevent himself putting Henderson’s corner beyond Fabianski and into his own net.

Daniel Storey of Football 365 was unashamed in his assessment of the midfielder’s performance:
From a Liverpool perspective it was a long overdue fine performance, as noted here by Squawka Football:
Indeed, the Red finally look as though they’re getting back into some kind of groove. The performances of Lallana and Philippe Coutinho were particularly impressive, and Rodgers will be hoping this burgeoning crop of young players will continue to blossom as the team looks ahead to a bright 2015.
Sunday Update

Second-placed City looked to be well on their way to closing the gap to table-topping Chelsea to just a single point as they went in at half-time at the Etihad 2-0 up on Burnley and seemingly cruising.
David Silva's opener and a stunning Fernandinho strike had put Manuel Pellegrini's side in front as the Sky Blues looked to take advantage of Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Southampton earlier in the day, but George Boyd's goal early in the second half changed the game completely.
While Boyd was offside as he tapped in Danny Ings' shot-cum-cross, Joe Hart was at fault for Burnley's goal as he allowed the ball to squeeze under him and City's entire team were culpable for starting the second half slowly, per BBC Sport's Steve Wilson:
Sean Dyche's men took great momentum from Boyd's tap-in and fully deserved Ashley Barnes' 81st-minute equaliser—a crashing strike from inside the box into the top corner—and the point that came with it.
Although Burnley still sit in 19th, on the evidence of Sunday's performance, they have enough about them to fight relegation, while City should have closed the gap on Jose Mourinho's men and could pay the price for not doing so further down the line.
For Chelsea's part, they went 1-0 down early on to a Sadio Mane goal but Eden Hazard equalised on the stroke of half-time after excellent individual work.

Chelsea dominated second-half proceedings but couldn't find a way past a terrific Southampton defence, even when Morgan Schneiderlin was sent off late on.
It was never going to be easy making the trip to St Mary's, and City's draw means Chelsea have not lost any ground at the top, not even to third-placed United, who stay 10 points back after drawing at White Hart Lane.
Louis van Gaal's men definitely had the best of the chances, especially in the first half, but they were eventually hanging on in the face of a late Spurs flurry, The Independent's Sam Wallace summing things up nicely:
United now have Arsenal—along with Saints—breathing down their neck, as the Gunners were able to claim all three points away at West Ham, Sam Allardyce's side dropping to sixth as a result.
A Santi Cazorla penalty and Dany Welbeck's goal put Arsene Wenger's side 2-0 up before the break, and although Cheikhou Kouyate's header gave the hosts hope at the Boleyn Ground, Arsenal hung on for the win.
Sunday's later game provided bags of goals and a win for Newcastle as the Magpies beat Everton 3-2 at St James' Park, condemning the Toffees to a third consecutive defeat.

Leicester finally ended their nightmare run of 13 matches without a win as Riyad Mahrez's first-half goal was enough for the Foxes to beat Hull, but they still sit three points adrift of safety in 20th.
Meanwhile, Stoke's 2-0 win over West Brom was their second victory in as many matches, and QPR leapfrogged the Baggies into 15th with a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace, Villa's game with Sunderland also finishing goalless.
Monday sees Liverpool host Swansea at Anfield, the Welsh side potentially able to move up to sixth with a convincing win.
