Tottenham vs. Newcastle: Winners and Losers from Capital One Cup Game

Jerrad PetersDec 17, 2014

Tottenham Hotspur are into the semi-final round of the Capital One Cup after beating Newcastle United 4-0 on Wednesday.

Nabil Bentaleb, Nacer Chadli, Harry Kane and Roberto Soldado scored the goals for the hosts, who benefited from a lackadaisical Newcastle performance and a pair of mistakes from Magpies goalkeeper Jak Alnwick.

Overall, there were a handful of standout performances at White Hart Lane, as well as some that were rather less impressive.

Here are the individual winners and losers from this quarter-final encounter.

Winner: Nabil Bentaleb, Who Scored His First Spurs Goal

1 of 6

Nabil Bentaleb has become an important contributor at Tottenham Hotspur—so much so that during Wednesday's match, Jack Pitt-Brooke, a writer for The Independent, tweeted that the Algerian international was the club's "best central midfielder now, no question."

In the 18th minute, Bentaleb was in good position to take advantage of Newcastle goalkeeper Jak Alnwick's mistake following a Spurs corner. His resulting goal represented his first senior tally for the Premier League outfit.

"I'm delighted for [Bentaleb]. He's one of the hardest workers in the squad," remarked teammate Jan Vertonghen after the match, as tweeted by Spurs' official account.

Loser: Jak Alnwick, Who Was at Fault for at Least Two Goals

In the 18th minute, and with Newcastle having made a decent start to the match, Magpies goalkeeper Jak Alnwick spilled Christian Eriksen's corner kick into the path of Nabil Bentaleb, who proceeded to open the scoring.

Alnwick might also have done better in attempting to stop Nacer Chadli's goal-bound shot just after the restart, but in the 70th minute his whopper of a rebound allowed substitute striker Roberto Soldado to give Tottenham a commanding 4-0 lead.

The Mirror's Simon Bird referred to the 'keeper's first error as a "major mistake" on Twitter, and the Northern Echo's Scott Wilson labelled the second as "embarrassing."

Winner: Harry Kane, Who Is Enjoying a Fine Run of Goals

3 of 6

Harry Kane scored in Tottenham's 2-1 win away to Swansea at the weekend, and he also found the back of the net at home to Newcastle on Wednesday.

His goal, which brought his seasonal tally to 11, was created by a sublime Andros Townsend through ball but still required a fine finish to the far corner.

Since becoming a regular contributor in this Spurs side, Kane, according to the Daily Mail's Simon Bird, has become "increasingly impressive."

Loser: Emmanuel Riviere, Who Was a Non-Factor

4 of 6

Emmanuel Riviere scored 10 Ligue 1 goals for Monaco last term, but he has yet to find the back of the net in nine Premier League appearances for Newcastle.

Since joining the Magpies, the 24-year-old has saved some of his best football for the Capital One Cup, but on Wednesday he was a non-factor as his side meekly went out of the competition.

Riviere didn't put a single shot on target before being withdrawn in the 60th minute—and shortly before coming off, he horribly mishit a well-placed cross from Ayoze Perez that should have represented Newcastle's first goal.

Winner: Christian Eriksen, Who Continues to Thrive in the Middle

5 of 6

Christian Eriksen is playing some of his best football since moving to North London from Ajax, and his switch from the wing to a No. 10 role explains at least part of his uptick in form.

The Denmark international is better able to impose himself on a match from a central position, and his Spurs teammates have recently benefited from the range and accuracy of his passing.

Following a terrific performance against Swansea the last time out, he once again ran the show for Spurs against Newcastle. Late in the match, Opta contributor Raj Bains tweeted that he had been "substantially more involved" as a No. 10, which he referred to as the 22-year-old's "natural position."

Loser: The Traveling Fans, Who Didn't Deserve the Performance They Got

6 of 6

Newcastle took 4,200 supporters with them to North London—a fact confirmed by the club's official twitter feed.

But while the traveling contingent made for a good atmosphere in the early going at White Hart Lane, their enthusiasm was somewhat dampened by an abysmal showing from their team.

Other than a few half-chances, Newcastle rarely threatened to score against Tottenham, and the mistakes that led to at least two of the Spurs goals only heightened the embarrassment of the evening.

That said, the dedication they showed was impressive and should send a message to the players.

"The relentless noise, funny chants and passion coming from [the] away end, at 4-0 down, is remarkable," tweeted the Daily Mirror's Simon Bird.
