Copa Del Rey Hat-Trick Proves Pedro Has More to Offer Barcelona

Rik SharmaDec 17, 2014

Pedro continues to show that he is one of the most inconsistent players in Barcelona's squad, with his brilliant hat-trick against Huesca coming in stark contrast to his lifeless showing against Getafe, just three days before.

The Canary Islander has been in the Barcelona squad for around seven years, after making his debut in the 2007-08 season, passing through the club's youth system like the ideal prototype for a Blaugrana academy prospect.

Against Huesca he only played the first 45 minutes before being replaced at half-time, but he had done enough by then.

Pedro opened the scoring, in acres of space in the box, contorting his body to head home Munir El Haddadi's beautiful sliced cross.

Before long he had another, this time breaking into the area and fooling the goalkeeper with his eyes before lifting the ball inside the near post with his left foot.

And then, at the end of the first half, he scored Barcelona's fifth of the night, in a game which eventually ended up resulting in an 8-1 win for his side.

This was the best of the lot. Receiving the ball from Adriano on the left-hand side of the box, he moved forward before blazing a right-footed strike into the top right corner, leaving the poor Huesca goalkeeper Jimenez Lopez with no chance.

That was enough for Enrique. He took Pedro off at half-time to keep him fresh for the visit of Cordoba on Saturday, Barcelona's last game of 2014.

Some are saying that Pedro is starting to come into form, after scoring only one goal in his first 16 games of the season for the club in all competitions.

He now has five goals in his last five games, although it should be noted that four of these goals were against Segunda B's Huesca, hardly the toughest of opponents.

However, the technique he has shown both here and in previous seasons, means that Luis Enrique will know there is more to come from Pedro, he just needs to coax it out.

With Neymar injured for Barcelona's visit to Getafe last weekend, Pedro played poorly in his stead. Barcelona not scoring wasn't just his fault; Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were also on the pitch and should have been able to change the game themselves.

Pedro had earned the chance to start ahead of Munir El Haddadi for his cameo against Sevilla.

The forward came on from the bench and not only scored an excellent goal, plucking Jordi Alba's ball out of the sky to drill home, but he also set up Messi to complete his record-breaking hat-trick.

While at 27 it's pretty clear that Pedro is never going to be one of Barcelona's main men, it's undeniable that having him around will continue to offer some benefits.

He's a patient man and never kicks and screams for a place in the team. However, Enrique will want him doing that in a footballing form.

If there's an injury to any of his main stars, Pedro is ahead of youngster Munir El Haddadi to fill in. What Enrique needs is Pedro to be close to peak form when that moment arrives.
