5 Most Important College Football Recruiting Visits of Week
Less than two months separates us from national signing day, making every piece of the recruiting process impactful at this point. Many of America's premier prospects remain uncommitted and could leave their collegiate fate undetermined into February.
Aside from a small selection of states still competing for titles, the final high school season has ended for 2015 recruits. As their full focus shifts toward finding the right college fit, here's our latest look at key campus visits to watch this weekend.
Notre Dame: 5-Star DB Iman Marshall (Long Beach, California)
1 of 5247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 3 overall, No. 1 among cornerbacks
High School Success
Long Beach Poly High School standout Iman Marshall is known as "Biggie" by his peers, and few 2015 prospects are as well respected. He is the top-rated uncommitted defender remaining in 247Sports' composite rankings and captured MVP honors as a junior in the competitive Mission League when he didn't surrender a single pass completion against league opponents.
The 6'1", 190-pound playmaker tallied a career-high 85 tackles in 2014 and caught eight touchdown passes on offense, per MaxPreps. Marshall managed to disrupt 16 pass attempts this season, despite the fact that he had limited targets.
"He definitely challenges you," 5-star UCLA quarterback commit Josh Rosen told me this summer. "It forces you to bring your best on each and every play. You can't afford to make a mistake."
Recruitment Status
Marshall determined his five official visits prior to the start of his senior season, but he didn't put the focus on recruiting until after the campaign concluded. Now he'll look to cram in several campus trips with limited time until signing day.
Marshall is also expected to spend official visits at Oklahoma, LSU and Florida State as signing day approaches. Aside from those potential landing spots, he considers in-state institutions Stanford, UCLA and USC to be viable contenders.
He's looked forward to this visit for months.
"I think a degree from Notre Dame could really set me up well for a post-football career," he told me in August. "The tradition there is also pretty amazing, and that certainly caught my interest. Coach [Brian] Kelly is one of the best, so I'm looking forward to that one."
Miami: 3-Star ATH Javarius Davis (Jacksonville, Florida)
2 of 5
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 461 overall, No. 37 among running backs
High School Success
The 5'9.5", 173-pound speedster is among the most explosive Sunshine State players in this class. Javarius Davis, the younger brother of former Georgia defensive back Bryan Evans, could ultimately play on either side of the ball.
The dynamic athlete emerged as a key weapon in all three phases of the game at Ed White High School, serving as a running back, cornerback and special-teams ace. He averaged nearly 14 yards per carry in limited action in the offensive backfield during the regular season before erupting for 270 rushing yards and three scores in a regional semifinal win last month, per Justin Barney of Jacksonville.com.
Davis, the 2014 state runner-up in the 100-meter dash, could do damage in multiple roles when he arrives on a college campus.
Recruitment Status
It remains a mystery where Miami would utilize Davis.
"They are recruiting me at athlete, but we'll go over that when I'm down there," he told Kynon Codrington of Bleacher Report.
Regardless of position, the Hurricanes covet his skill set.
"They told me they don't have anybody with my speed," Davis told Codrington. "The coaches say I could come in early and make a big impact. Plus I love the old 'U,' and I think they could get back to that with a few pieces."
Florida and Louisville are among other programs giving chase.
Texas: 4-Star RB Chris Warren (Rockwall, Texas)
3 of 5
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 82 overall, No. 9 among running backs
High School Success
The dominant Rockwall High School rusher registered his first 2,000-yard season in 2014. Chris Warren carried the ball 248 times for 2,329 yards and 35 scores, adding 178 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
He burst onto the scene with a 1,000-yard, 13-score season as a sophomore but never looked more elite than this fall. The 6'2", 232-pound playmaker has no problem doing damage between the tackles and showed enough versatility in the passing game to prove he has three-down potential.
Recruitment Status
This is the first of four official visits for Warren before national signing day. He also plans to spend time at Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Washington during the next six weeks.
He initially received a scholarship from the Longhorns when Mack Brown was in charge. Now he aims to see how the program has progressed with Charlie Strong at the helm.
"I know the Texas staff very well," he told me earlier this week. "My goal during the visit is to see what coach Strong is doing differently than coach Brown did to set the team up for more success on and off the field."
Alabama: 4-Star OL Chidi Valentine-Okeke (Ludowici, Georgia)
4 of 5
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 119 overall, No. 10 offensive tackle
High School Success
The 6'6", 305-pound prospect earned U.S. Army All-American Bowl honors this year. The Nigeria native overcame early obstacles as he learned the game and quickly became one of the Southeast's top prospects.
Chidi Valentine-Okeke spearheaded the offensive attack at Faith Baptist Christian Academy. He exhibits elite reach and length but still has significant strides to make in terms of fundamentals.
Among the top group of offensive tackle prospects, Valentine-Okeke appears to be the proverbial "high-ceiling" prospect.
Recruitment Status
Valentine-Okeke, who plans to announce his collegiate choice January 3 at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, is narrowing down his options. Earlier this month, he listed Alabama, Georgia and Auburn as top contenders, per Keith Niehbur of 247Sports (subscription required).
"I'm still neutral," Valentine-Okeke said. "I'm just praying to God he can lead me."
The mammoth talent may not be an immediate-impact player at the next level, but his aggressiveness and athleticism suggest he can become an anchor along the offensive front for multiple seasons.
USC: 4-Star ATH Ykili Ross (Riverside, California)
5 of 5
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 131 overall, No. 12 among wide receivers
High School Success
Polytechnic High School senior Ykili Ross is a versatile playmaker who may see action on either side of the ball in college. Though he is rated as a receiver, several squads eye the 6'2", 185-pound prospect as a cornerback.
He helped lead his squad to a 12-win campaign in 2014, contributing in the secondary and downfield on offense. Ross has the ability to add bulk to his frame and become even more of a force along the defensive perimeter, where he already displays impressive physicality against the run.
Recruitment Status
Ross spent an official visit at Notre Dame in November. It was his second visit to South Bend since this summer, and the Fighting Irish are viewed as a realistic threat to swipe him away from the West Coast.
This is the second time USC has hosted Ross on campus since late October. Other teams in the mix include Oregon, Oklahoma and Texas A&M.
