Wednesday Update

Manchester City booked their ticket to the round of 16 with a 2-0 win over AS Roma, while Barcelona beat Paris Saint-Germain in the clash of titans at the Camp Nou and Chelsea did their sporting duty, helping Schalke 04 qualify with a 3-1 win over Sporting.

The Citizens had to beat Roma and rely on Bayern Munich to get past CSKA Moscow, and both scenarios came to fruition on Wednesday. Samir Nasri opened the score at the Olimpico with a stunning blast from distance in the second half, as shared by Paddy Power:

Pablo Zabaleta added a second late in the match to secure the win, as City finally overcame their European demons on their way to the round of 16.

As shared by BBC Sport, manager Manuel Pellegrini always believed his squad could do it:

Bayern Munich took an early lead against CSKA thanks to a Thomas Muller penalty, and the 25-year-old became the Bavarians' leading scorer in Champions League history with said goal, per Squawka:

Sebastian Rode and Mario Gotze put the final score of 3-0 on the board with two goals inside the final minutes, sending the Russians out of Europe and the Giallorossi to the Europa League.

Barcelona faced an early deficit after Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the score at the Nou Camp, but goals from Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez turned the situation around, giving the Blaugrana a 3-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain and the top spot in Group C

According to Squawka, it marks the eighth consecutive year the Catalans progress to the knockout stages as the top seed:

Ajax needed to avoid a loss against APOEL Nicosia to qualify for the Europa League, and the Dutch champions ended their Champions League adventure in style with a 4-0 win.

Max Meyer scored the only goal in Schalke 04's win over Maribor, and the Germans booked their spot in Monday's draw thanks to Chelsea's 3-1 win against Sporting Lisbon. Cesc Fabregas opened the score from the penalty spot, and Andre Schurrle and John Obi Mikel secured the three points.

The latter isn't known as much of a scoring threat, which led to much hilarity on social media. Former England international Gary Lineker used it to take a little dig at Chelsea's easy group:

FC Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk had already qualified for the next round, and they played out a 1-1 draw to close out Group H. Athletic Bilbao's 2-0 win over BATE Borisov sees the Basques continue their European adventure in the Europa League.

Here's the full list of clubs moving down to the second tier of European football, courtesy of Squawka:

The remaining 16 clubs will enter the draw for the round of 16 on Monday, split together into two groups: top seeds and runners-up. The top seeds will be away on the first matchday of the knockout stages.

Teams from the same association can't be drawn together, and opponents from the group stages also won't be playing each other in the round of 16.

Tuesday Recap

No match provided more drama and controversial moments than Liverpool's 1-1 draw against FC Basel, which saw Lazar Markovic dismissed early in the second half and the Reds denied multiple penalty claims.

Fabian Frei had given the Swiss outfit a deserved lead in the first half, and the situation looked hopeless when Markovic received a straight red card for swiping at Behrang Safari's face. Bleacher Report UK shared the Vine:

The Serb appeared to hardly make any contact with Safari, who spent minutes withering in pain on the pitch. Markovic did eye Safari the entire way and didn't give the official much choice by actually swinging his arm, but the decision was heavily scrutinised on social media nonetheless.

Most appeared to agree with BT Sport's Ian Darke:

Anfield nearly exploded when official Bjorn Kuipers didn't put the ball on the penalty spot after Steven Gerrard was brought down inside the box by goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik, but replays showed the stopper just managed to get a hand on the ball before making contact with the Reds' legend.

Gerrard tied things up with a phenomenal free-kick inside the final 10 minutes, leading to a spectacular finish. The Vine, courtesy of KICK TV:

Both teams had chances to win in the final 10 minutes, but ultimately the score remained unchanged, sending Basel to the round of 16 and Liverpool to the Europa League.

As shared by Bleacher Report UK's Karl Matchett, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believed the Swiss outfit were deserving of qualifying:

In the other match in Group B, defending champions Real Madrid pushed their winning streak to 19 matches with a 4-0 thrashing of Ludogorets Razgrad.

Juventus held Atletico Madrid to a 0-0 draw in Turin to secure their spot in the next round, despite Olympiakos' 4-2 win over Malmo.

Arsenal ended their group-stage campaign on a high note, winning 3-1 against Galatasaray. Given a rare start, Lukas Podolski was excellent against the Turks, opening the score inside the first few minutes.

Aaron Ramsey then stole the show with a pair of fine goals, including this fantastic volley, a strong candidate for the goal of the year award:

Wesley Sneijder decided he wouldn't be outdone late in the second half, via Crazy Football Vines:

The result had no influence on the standings in Group D, where everything had already been decided. Arsenal could have jumped over Dortmund for the top seed, but the Gunners would have needed a small miracle. The Germans played out a 1-1 draw at home against Anderlecht.

Bayer Leverkusen missed a unique opportunity to grab the top seed in Group C but will still qualify for the round of 16 after their 0-0 draw against Benfica Lisbon. AS Monaco booked their ticket with a 2-0 win over Zenit St. Petersburg, relegating the Russians to the Europa League.

Just two more spots in the next round are up for grabs, and all eyes will be on AS Roma and Manchester City on Wednesday, as the two giants go head-to-head for the chance to progress from Group E.
