Texas A&M Football: 5 Bold Predictions for the Aggies' Bowl Game
The Texas A&M football team will play the West Virginia Mountaineers in the 2014 Liberty Bowl. The Aggies will have a number of players who will surprise with their strong play in Memphis.
The Aggies and Mountaineers have a lot of crossover between the two coaching staffs. West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen was an assistant under Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin when the two coached at Houston.
Texas A&M offensive coordinator Jake Spavital coached quarterbacks under Holgorsen at West Virginia. Both teams should be very familiar which the other's offense.
The Texas A&M defense plays against the West Virginia offense every day in practice. The Liberty Bowl should come down to which team executes its defense best.
This is a look at a few bold predictions for the 2014 Liberty Bowl.
Myles Garrett Will Have 3 Sacks
1 of 5
If Texas A&M is going to beat WVU, it will need to put consistent pressure on Mountaineer quarterback Clint Trickett. The Aggies pass rush has been led by true freshman defensive end Myles Garrett.
Trickett is completing 67.1 percent of his passes for 3,285 yards and 18 touchdowns. He has thrown 10 interceptions on the year, so he can be pressured into making mistakes.
Garrett has set an SEC record for freshmen with 11 sacks in 2014. The West Virginia offensive line has allowed 28 sacks in 12 games.
The WVU offensive line will not be able to handle the speed and strength combination that Garrett presents. He will dominate in Memphis and register three sacks in the game.
Trey Williams Will Rush for 100 Yards
2 of 5
Texas A&M junior running back Trey Williams has been sorely underutilized in 2014. He is leading the Aggies in rushing yards with 474 and rushing touchdowns with six.
He has done that in 11 games while only carrying the ball 70 times. Williams is averaging 6.8 yards per carry. After doing some self-scouting during the break before the bowl game, the Aggie coaches will realize they need to get the ball in Williams' hands more.
Williams will get 15 carries against WVU and rush for over 100 yards with two touchdowns.
Deshazor Everett Will Get a Pick-Six
3 of 5
Texas A&M senior cornerback Deshazor Everett has played the last three games of the regular season with a torn elbow tendon. He has been a warrior for the team and displayed the kind of courage you would expect from a senior.
Everett has struggled a little in coverage as a senior, but every so often he makes plays that remind everyone why he is considered an NFL prospect. Do not be surprised to see Everett make a big play in his last collegiate game.
He will intercept a pass and return it for a touchdown to help put an exclamation point on a solid career in Aggieland.
Ricky Seals-Jones Will Lead the Aggies in Receiving
4 of 5
Ricky Seals-Jones led the Aggies in receptions in the regular season with 48. Unfortunately, because of the way he has been used in the offense, the 6'5", 235-pound redshirt freshman has only averaged 9.2 yards per reception.
The Aggie coaches will make a more concerted effort to get Seals-Jones the ball down the middle of the field against WVU. Seals-Jones has a major height advantage against the Mountaineers safeties, Dravon Henry and Karl Joseph.
The Aggies offense excels when the coaches get the ball to Seals-Jones on intermediate routes. Expect the Aggies to go to him early and often in order to exploit these size mismatches.
Seals-Jones will lead the Aggies in receptions and receiving yards in the Liberty Bowl.
The Aggie Defense Will Force 3 Turnovers
5 of 5
The Texas A&M defense has been a punchline all season. The unit played so poorly that defensive coordinator Mark Snyder was fired after the LSU game.
The bowl game has given the defense a new lease on life. With the kind of pressure Myles Garrett and his teammates will be able to apply to Clint Trickett, the Aggies will be able to force multiple turnovers in this game.
The defense should be comfortable facing an offense it sees every day in practice. Look for the Aggie defense to earn back a little bit of respect by forcing three turnovers against the Mountaineers.
