Galatasaray vs. Arsenal: Arsene Wenger and Hamza Hamzaoglu Post-Match Reaction

Rob BlanchetteDec 9, 2014

Arsene Wenger was happy with his team's strong work in Turkey on Tuesday night, as Arsenal defeated Galatasaray 4-1.

Two goals apiece by experienced German Lukas Podolski and star midfielder Aaron Ramsey was enough for the Emirates club as they comfortably dismantled their opponents.

Wenger was in a reflective mood post-match but said he and his side felt slightly "frustrated" with the way things had gone for them, per Luke Reddy of BBC Sport:

"

There's a little bit of frustration, but we knew at half-time we needed to score six without conceding. Fortunately, it wasn't enough, we finished with 13 points and did the job tonight.

We came out strong and that's what I wanted from these players. When he [Ramsey] took the shot I thought that was maybe not the best idea, but the way he took it, it flew in.

"

Wenger also spoke about Ramsey's improved form on the night and the way both Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund qualified with ease from the group:

"

It's linked to his [Ramsey] performance at the moment and that certainly helps him score the goals he is.

We had two favourites responding to the fact they were favourites. We won four games and had one draw, we can maybe regret that point at home to Anderlecht. There's some great teams in there and we need to wait and see who we get.

"

Galatasaray boss Hamza Hamzaoglu said in his post-match press conference, per YouTube, that despite his side having such a poor beginning to the night, they controlled the second half:

"

Unfortunately we had a very bad start and the goal came very early and we lost control of the game, but during the second half we dominated and created positions—but could not score.

"

Arsenal started the night in fine fashion with Podolski hitting a thunderbolt into the top corner in just the third minute.

The Gunners doubled their advantage just eight minutes later as Ramsey ran through to calmly slot past the goalkeeper into the opposite corner with a cute and composed finish.

And then the Welsh midfielder completed the perfect half for Wenger with a wonder strike from outside of the area, scoring on 29 minutes to put his team 3-0 at the break.

Galatasaray struck back in the second half with their feverish crowd driving the team on.

Their cries were answered with a spectacular strike from Dutch master Wesley Sneijder, who hit a beautiful free-kick from range in the dying moments.

But Arsenal ended the night how they began it—with Podolski grabbing his second of the game with almost the final kick of the match, giving the North London team a 4-1 win on the night.

Bleacher Report's Arsenal expert, James McNicholas, gave his reaction immediate after the match—saying he was pleased with the fringe players who had got their opportunity to feature in the tie:

Arsenal will be disappointed that they ended the group stages in second position after Dortmund drew their final match of the proceedings. However, 13 points is an excellent return for Wenger's men and has fully tested the Gunners' resolve.

Wenger will want to concentrate on his Premier League status now as we temporarily put the Champions League to bed. If Arsenal cannot sort their domestic form out, they might not get a chance to participate in Europe's biggest club competition next season.
