Sox Get Martinez, Kotchman. Starters Still In Question.

Brad BunickJul 31, 2009

The Boston Red Sox acquired catcher and first baseman Victor Martinez from the Cleveland Indians on Friday for pitchers Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone and David Price.

Atlanta Braves first baseman Kasey Kotchman will also be coming to Boston for last weeks acquisition first baseman Adam LaRoche.

Clay Bucholtz, Daniel Bard, Michael Bowden, and other's futures remain with the organization, the lineup gets a much needed bat, and the division rival Yankees didn't make a strong enough run at Toronto ace Roy Halladay. Sounds like a good day.

The bad news? Finding playing time for the three-time All-Star in Martinez. Jason Varitek, David Ortiz, Mike Lowell, and the smaller acquisition Kotchman all share Martinez's repertoire of positions. It will be interesting to see how manager Terry Francona deals with the situation, and how the players respond to his daily decisions.

The next concern has to do with the current starting pitching staff. Behind Josh Becket and lefty Jon Lester, the Sox have a lot of question marks still lurking after today. Veteran John Smoltz and the known second-half-disaster that is Brad Penny sure don't look to be the answer. Current All-Star Tim Wakefield isn't exactly a second-half lock either. Will Bucholtz grow into the No. 3 spot? Only time will tell, but you have to ask if the price for Halladay really was too high.

At the end of the day the Red Sox were winners, and general manager Theo Epstein & Co. showed once again they could make an impact midway through the season, something Yankee's fans will be wondering about with their general manager, Brian Cashman.
