Man Dies in Fight Between Atletico and Deportivo Fans
In a tragic case of footballing loyalties being taken too far, a man was killed after a fight broke out between supporters of Atletico Madrid and Deportivo on Sunday.
AS English verified the tragic result of the brawl on Twitter:
According to a Eurosport report, 11 people were injured, three people were stabbed and one police officer suffered a fractured finger in the fracas.
The two clubs were reportedly unable to contact the Spanish Federation before the match to determine if the contest should be postponed due to the incident, so they proceeded with the game. Atletico Madrid won 2-0 in an outcome that feels trivial after the events of the morning.
Dermot Corrigan of ESPN heard from Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo after the match:
He also had this from Deportivo president Tino Fernandez:
According to The Guardian, "The 43-year-old fan, who was not identified by name, had to be fished out of the freezing Manzanares river near Atletico's Vicente Calderon stadium."
