College Football Rankings 2014: Twitter Reacts to AP and Amway Week 14 Polls

Tyler ConwayNov 23, 2014

Those hoping the college football playoff picture would be clearer after Week 13 were sorely disappointed. A week filled with few Top 25 matchups finished largely as expected, with the nation's elite keeping themselves in the title picture.

Florida State did its weekly escape act against Boston College, while Alabama, Oregon and Mississippi State each blew out cupcakes. The College Football Playoff poll won't be released until Tuesday, but the Associated Press and Coaches outlooks are a solid enough representation of what should be an inert few days.

Here is a look at both Top 25s:

Florida State, like it is many Sundays, is most worthy of a postmortem. The Seminoles were again the recipient of good luck, as Alex Howell's 42-yard field goal missed wide right and helped set up yet another Jameis Winston last-minute drive. Winston and Dalvin Cook spearheaded a 12-play, 66-yard drive to give Roberto Aguayo a chance to hit a game-winning 26-yard field goal.

"Honestly, I didn't feel the butterflies," Aguayo told reporters. "It was just kick whatever of my career, kick 100 and whatever. Yeah, it was to win the game but you can't think of it like that because that's when things will start going through your head, like, 'Oh, this is a game winner I have to make it.'"

Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports commented on Florida State's habit of coming back from the dead:

ESPN's Peter Burns said he'd take Arkansas, which defeated Ole Miss on Saturday, over the Seminoles:

Everyone left the weekend focused on Florida State because so few other results were worth mentioning. Oregon avoided giving Colorado its first Pac-12 win in a 44-10 romp. Marcus Mariota threw for 323 yards, added 73 on the ground and accounted for four total touchdowns. Those scores helped the Heisman favorite break the single-season Pac-12 record for total touchdowns.

"I couldn't have done it without all those guys in the locker room," Mariota told reporters. "To me, it is what it is—a number. I'm sure another guy will come around in the next couple of years and break it."

Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports highlighted Mariota's two-year run of excellence:

SB Nation's Ryan Nanni threw credit Mariota's way for validating his entire division:

Alabama and Mississippi State also earned uneventful victories against cupcake opponents. The Crimson Tide overcame a surprisingly spry first two quarters against Western Carolina en route to a 48-14 blowout of the FCS school. Lane Kiffin's offense accounted for more than 600 total yards and scored the game's final 31 points.

Someone should probably tell Jesse Spector of the Sporting News about that:

Mississippi State's 51-0 victory over Vanderbilt was never in question. Dak Prescott threw three touchdowns and the Bulldogs rushed for 283 yards in the relatively relaxing blowout.

"We cleaned up a lot from last week and made some plays," Prescott told reporters. "We won 51-0. If you don't think we controlled that game, then I don't know what you're looking for."

In-state rival Ole Miss awaits next week. As noted by Bleacher Report's Barrett Sallee, though, the Bulldogs' resume might not look especially great if they pull off that victory:

Ohio State will also have some work to do on its resume after Saturday. The Buckeyes trailed lowly Indiana deep into the third quarter before going on four-touchdown run to put the game away. Ohio State's 42-27 victory will have more people questioning the Big Ten outfit, which came into Week 13 already needing help to get into the CFP.

ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit is nonetheless a believer, ranking the Buckeyes fourth in his poll:

"We're conference division champions, we've won a bunch of games (nine) in a row," Ohio State coach Urban Meyer told reporters. "We have some work to do. Sometimes in college football, things don't go exactly as scripted."

While Meyer is correct, the only game that didn't go as "scripted" this week was Arkansas' 30-0 blowout of Ole Miss. Higher-ranked teams won all but one other game, which was then-No. 25 Minnesota's win over then-No. 23 Nebraska—not exactly a shocking upset. The result created a poll that looks largely like the one that came before, leaving a smaller margin for error than ever.

The biggest deviation from the playoff committee and the standard pollsters remains Marshall, which continues bathing in the undefeated waters in anonymity. The Thundering Herd had their first close call of the season in their 23-18 win over UAB, which will do little to help bring the committee around on their resume.

ESPN's Joe Schad created a neat #advancedstat for Marshall's season:

Undefeated record aside, it's unlikely that Marshall gets any recognition from the committee this season. The Herd's strength of schedule isn't good enough to stack up against power-five teams, and it'll be interesting to see how they're treated when it comes to bowl selections.

For now, though, Marshall's best argument is how flawed the other teams at the top look.
