5 Most Important College Football Recruiting Visits of Week 13
The college football season has reached its final stretch. Aside from pivotal postseason ramifications, there is increased emphasis on rounding out recruiting classes during this time of year.
Those efforts include campus visits that could determine the final decisions of several high-profile recruits. Here's our latest look at top prospects who will be on the move in upcoming days.
Oregon: 5-Star DE Byron Cowart (Seffner, Florida)
1 of 5
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 5 overall; No. 1 among strong-side defensive ends
High School Success
Byron Cowart is a feared pass-rusher who presents versatile options for defensive coordinators looking to mix things up along the front. The 6'4", 250-pound defender is capable of lining up at outside linebacker or defensive end, with enough athleticism to command respect along the perimeter in either role.
He collected 13 sacks and 72 tackles in 2013, emerging as one of Florida's premier prospects. Cowart, who stars at Armwood High School, starred at The Opening and already displays the natural strength of an impact college player.
Recruitment Status
This trip presents a major opportunity for Oregon to flex its muscles on the recruiting trail. The Ducks have steadily established increased prowess across the country with on-field success and a key connection to Nike.
Now the team is attracting top prospects from the other side of America. Cowart, once viewed as a Florida lean, is now considering several schools.
With Will Muschamp out of the equation, his relationship with the Gators has frayed, and teams like Florida State and Alabama are making inroads. Oregon may not ultimately land Cowart, but it speaks volumes for the team to get him on campus at this point in the recruiting cycle.
Auburn: 4-Star DT Neville Gallimore (Ontario, Canada)
2 of 5
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 104 overall; No. 12 among defensive tackles
High School Success
Neville Gallimore, a beastly Canadian defensive lineman, was a late-riser in this cycle but established himself as a legitimate blue-chipper by holding his own at The Opening. The 6'3", 300-pound prospect is powerful off the snap and routinely discards double-team blocking efforts at Canada Prep Football Academy.
He flashes an explosive first step and rare reactive quickness for an athlete of his stature. His size and short-area agility offer several possibilities at the next level, whether he lines up at nose tackle or 3-technique.
Recruitment Status
This is one of the most wide-open recruitments remaining as signing day approaches. Gallimore has given the impression he's willing to wait for a decision, and teams across the country remain in the mix.
Though Gallimore was initially expected to visit Oregon this weekend, he will instead head to Auburn. The Ducks are likely to host his next official visit, while several other suitors are still in pursuit.
Ohio State, Oklahoma and Florida State have each welcomed him to campus and are anticipated to contend for his commitment.
Florida State: 5-Star DE Josh Sweat (Chesapeake, Virginia)
3 of 5247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 overall, No. 1 among weak-side defensive ends
High School Success
Josh Sweat was simply unstoppable during a breakout 2013 campaign. He pillaged offensive backfields while going to work alongside former Oscar Smith High School teammate Andrew Brown, a 5-star defensive tackle who graduated earlier this year.
Sweat secured 94 tackles and 22 sacks in 2013, wreaking havoc as a pass-rusher and run-stuffing specialist along the perimeter. The 6'5", 240-pound playmaker can hold his own along the interior or beat offensive tackles off the edge, evidenced by a 40-yard dash time of 4.46 seconds.
"You have to be perfect against Sweat," 5-star Clemson offensive tackle commit Mitch Hyatt told me. "Otherwise, you're done."
Unfortunately, his senior season ended extremely early due to injury. Sweat suffered a knee injury that required surgery and is currently concentrating on rehabilitation for college.
Recruitment Status
After undergoing surgery, Sweat postponed official visit plans for approximately two months. His lone pre-injury visit occurred at Ohio State.
He's back on the recruiting trail this month, and a trip to Tallahassee is his second straight official visit weekend. Sweat spent last weekend at Georgia and will travel to Virginia next week before making his decision.
Florida State has a vital opportunity to impress the coveted defender and lock in his commitment within a matter of weeks.
Arizona State: 4-Star DT Joseph Wicker (Long Beach, California)
4 of 5
247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 182 overall; No. 17 among defensive tackles
High School Success
Joseph Wicker moved to defensive tackle full time this season, and the switch paid immediate dividends. The Long Beach Poly High School standout has secured 55 tackles, including 25 for loss, through 10 games this season, per MaxPreps.
The 6'2", 265-pound prospect is an explosive pass-rusher, evidenced by an astounding 17.5 sacks. Wicker previously played along the perimeter and could line up at various positions in college.
He possesses a physical frame that should be able to expand in coming years without sacrificing the athleticism that sets him apart.
Recruitment Status
Wicker is expected to land in the Pac-12, with UCLA playing the part of heavy favorite less than three months shy of signing day. The former Washington commit will now take a close look at Arizona State, a team that has quietly assembled one of the conference's most well-rounded recruiting classes.
Beyond the Pac-12, teams worth monitoring include Oklahoma and Texas Tech.
UCLA: 5-Star DB Kevin Toliver II (Jacksonville, Florida)
5 of 5247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 8 overall; No. 2 among cornerbacks
High School Success
LSU commit Kevin Toliver II anchors the secondary for defending state champion Trinity Christian Academy. The 6'2", 185-pound cornerback is an absolute ball hawk who approaches the line of scrimmage with a refreshing streak of physicality.
He serves a dual-threat talent at Trinity Christian, lining up at both quarterback and running back. Toliver shows the versatility to contribute at cornerback or safety in college, projecting most favorably in press coverage.
Recruitment Status
Toliver pledged to LSU as a sophomore but continues to consider other options. He's stayed busy this season, spending official visits at Ohio State, Virginia Tech and Florida State.
Now he heads to UCLA, a program that's invested substantial time into recruiting the Sunshine State star.
"The biggest school coming at me is UCLA," Toliver told Amos Morale of NOLA.com earlier this year.
The Bruins hold a commitment from linebacker Victor Alexander, who lines up alongside Toliver at Trinity Christian. Alexander will accompany him during the campus visit.
