Liverpool vs. Chelsea: Brendan Rodgers and Jose Mourinho Post-Match Reaction

James DudkoNov 8, 2014

Chelsea stayed unbeaten at the top of the Premier League after beating Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield. Goals from Gary Cahill and Diego Costa were enough to give the Blues the win.

Boss Jose Mourinho heralded the victory as a symbol of Chelsea's intent to win major trophies this term, after finishing without silverware last season, per the club's official Twitter feed:

Mourinho made it clear the Premier League title remains his focus:

However, despite remaining unbeaten, Mourinho doesn't believe his team will emulate Arsenal's 'Incvincibles,' who won the 2003-04 title without losing, per Squawka Football:

Yet despite Mourinho's skepticism, his squad hasn't tasted defeat in 11 games. However, it took some controversy to keep it that way.

Nearly ten years after Luis Garcia knocked Chelsea out of the UEFA Champions league with a phantom goal that appeared to be cleared off the line by William Gallas, goal-line technology came to Mourinho's aid.

It confirmed Cahill's headed equaliser from a first-half corner. With a more than a hint of irony, Mourinho praised the technology:

The Blues were fortunate when referee Anthony Taylor overlooked the ball seeming to go out of play during the build-up to Costa's decisive strike. Luck was also on Chelsea's side when Taylor later failed to give a penalty after what appeared to be a clear handball from Cahill as he blocked a Steven Gerrard shot.

The BT Sport Twitter account captured the hotly contested moment:

Those incidents aside, Chelsea were largely in control during the second half. A smart and steady performance from playmaker Cesc Fabregas was a major reason why.

But Mourinho revealed the former Arsenal and Barcelona schemer had been an injury doubt for the game:

However, risking Fabregas has perhaps come at a price, as Mourinho revealed:

That next game will come after yet another international break and see Chelsea face off against West Bromwich Albion at Stamford Bridge. Given the strength and depth of his squad, Mourinho should be able to cope if Fabregas isn't fully fit in time.

But while Mourinho is understandably buoyant after another win, Anfield gaffer Brendan Rodgers was left fuming. Naturally, the non-award of the penalty was the obvious focus of his ire, per Eurosport:

Predictably, Rodgers also had to discuss the decision to rest key players for Liverpool's midweek Champions League game away to Real Madrid.

Rodgers reinstalled six of the players not used in the Spanish capital, including midfielders Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson. Despite the rest in Europe not helping Liverpool earn a win in the league, Rodgers defended his selection policies, per BBC Sport reporter Phil McNulty:

It's difficult to believe many Liverpool fans will share Rodgers' view of his recent choices. Winning cures all ills, but Liverpool certainly aren't doing that at the moment.

This result drops the Merseyside club to seventh in the league on just 14 points, according to PremierLeague.com. Losing one-time talisman Luis Suarez has clearly stunted a team that finished second last season.

Rodgers still needs to balance and settle a squad loaded with a batch of new recruits, many of whom have yet to live up to their billing. However, just like the rest of the league, Rodgers and Liverpool will have a hard time trying to stay with Mourinho's dominant Chelsea team.
