NFL Power Rankings Week 10: Latest Outlook and 2014-15 Super Bowl Odds

Chris RolingNov 3, 2014

Las Vegas is as lost as anyone when it comes to the 2014-15 Super Bowl with Week 10 on approach.

Seattle has lost at home. New England has resurrected to championship form. Denver folds on the road. A .500 team may win more than one division.

Believe it or not, power rankings may be able to help in this regard. At the very least, they serve as the most recent barometer of league hierarchy with the entirety of the season taken into account, wild as it has been so far.

32. Oakland Raiders (0-8)

There is something to be said for the Oakland Raiders continuing to put up a strong fight each week.

Week 10 was a six-point loss in Seattle that was surely too close for comfort for the defending champs. That makes it four weeks in a row against strong opposition that rookie quarterback Derek Carr and Co. have fought until the bitter end.

The Raiders are undoubtedly due, although the schedule gets no kinder in the coming weeks with Denver and San Diego on deck.

31. New York Jets (1-8)

It is becoming increasingly difficult to figure out how the New York Jets even have one win this season.

Right, they played the worst team on this list.

Rex Ryan's Jets have lost an impressive eight games and tout the league's worst passing attack behind the arm of Michael Vick. A strong defense means little once again for the franchise.

30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-7)

To say the first year of Lovie Smith's tenure in Tampa Bay has been a failure is an understatement.

When he has to bust out lines such as one provided by Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, it is clear things are in desperation mode:

Losers of four straight and with one of the league's worst pass defenses, the Buccaneers seem flat-out tired of trying.

29. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-8)

Jacksonville continues to improve each week thanks to the efforts of Denard Robinson on the ground (423 yards and two scores) and a stingy defense that keeps opposing signal-callers under pressure.

The problem is, like many of the worst teams in the league, a simple talent deficiency holds things back.

Still, it is quite clear coach Gus Bradley has something special brewing in one of the league's most significant rebuilds.

28. Tennessee Titans (2-6)

The Tennessee Titans have quite the resume this season.

A fluky win over Kansas City in Week 1? Check. A two-point win over a one-win Jacksonville team? Check.

That's all, folks. Charlie Whitehurst is not the answer under center, nor is Jake Locker. Rookie Zach Mettenberger is getting his shot. One of the league's worst run defenses tends to ensure whoever is under center gets a ton of chances to score, anyway.

27. Atlanta Falcons (2-6)

Losers of five straight, it seems forever ago that the Atlanta Falcons got started on the right foot with an overtime win against a divisional foe.

Matt Ryan leads an offense that ranks among the top 10 in terms of passing, but it means little when his backfield is entirely ineffective (ranks 25th in yards per game) and his defense ranks 30th against the pass and 25th against the rush.

Like it or not, a slight rebuild may be on the way if things do not turn around quickly.

26. Washington (3-6)

The return of Robert Griffin III did not provide Washington with a win, but it was an encouraging sign to see him gun for 251 yards and a score with another 24 yards on the ground against a game Minnesota defense.

Washington quietly ranks among the top 10 in terms of pass defense, so as long as RG3 can remain upright and healthy to hit weapons such as Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson, getting back to .500 at the very least has a strong chance of happening.

25. Carolina Panthers (3-5-1)

There seems to be no saving the Carolina Panthers at this point.

Just try not to tell that to coach Ron Rivera, as captured by the team's Twitter account:

The team has not won since Week 5 and looks miserable against any serious competition as of late. A woeful offensive line and set of weapons around Cam Newton is not something that can be fixed overnight, either.

24. Chicago Bears (3-5)

Losing four out of their last five and coming out of a bye to face Green Bay, a team that beat them 38-17 not too long ago, may prove the death knell for the 2014 Chicago Bears.

Really, the team has lost all of its games against serious contenders this year. Even Miami has the look of a great team thanks to an elite secondary, so tough sledding was to be expected.

The bad news is that the schedule never really lets up. Character and fortitude must come along with talent to win titles in this league.

23. Minnesota Vikings (4-5)

It has been a bumpy ride for first-year head coach Mike Zimmer in Minnesota, although some things have been entirely out of his control.

Still, a two-game win streak is something to be proud of, as is the continued development of rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. The former Louisville star most recently threw for 268 yards and a score to lead the Vikings to a win over Washington.

The Vikings will not be competing for a division title, but an elite pass defense and developing offense are positive signs for the future.

22. New York Giants (3-4)

The New York Giants offense tends to come and go in elite spurts, with the most recent stretch being of the embarrassing variety thanks to a pair of NFC East losses that has set the team back in a major way.

Eli Manning is being better with the football than last season, when he led the league in interceptions.

But Manning has little help with Victor Cruz and running back Rashad Jennings injured. His defense also happens to be one of the leakiest in the league. Never count out the Giants with Manning under center, but things look bleak.

21. St. Louis Rams (3-5)

This was easy to see coming.

The St. Louis Rams have stood tall and not batted an eye in the face of injury all season long, giving the best of contenders nightmares in the process.

Week 7 was a win over Seattle. This past weekend was a road upset of San Francisco in which the team forced its way to eight sacks.

The Rams are not winning much of anything but the pride battle this season, and that is just fine. There is nothing more fun than a gritty spoiler to give contenders fits this time of year and onward.

20. Houston Texans (4-5)

How bad is the AFC South?

The Houston Texans, losers of four of their last five with three wins coming over laughably bad competition, rest in second place.

A defense led by J.J. Watt cannot make up for a miserable offense led by Ryan Fitzpatrick under center. Such is life when a front office ignores its biggest need of all in the draft.

19. San Francisco 49ers (4-4)

Feel free to give the panic button a smack for the San Francisco 49ers.

Now in third place in the NFC West, the 49ers have dropped two games in a row, the latest being a letdown at the hands of St. Louis despite coming off a bye.

Much of the blame for the team's issues this year directly falls on the shoulders of the coaching staff. Late in the loss this past weekend, the staff ignored Frank Gore with the game on the line in the waning moments.

That is how to lose a football game, folks.

18. San Diego Chargers (5-4)

The San Diego Chargers are victims of their own schedule at this point.

Week 7 was a loss to a surging Kansas City team. Week 8 was a loss in Denver. Last week was an inexcusable 37-0 loss to a quietly very strong Miami team.

The Chargers will remain labeled as contenders thanks to Philip Rivers under center and a strong pass defense that has had a rough go of it in recent weeks, but the team had better figure things out over the course of the bye in Week 10 before even that label slips away.

17. Buffalo Bills (5-3)

The Buffalo Bills have been a tad erratic this season in some areas, but not where it tends to matter most—in terms of turnovers.

Mike Jurecki of Fox Sports 910 has the scoop:

Coming out of a bye winners of two straight, the Bills and veteran quarterback Kyle Orton have some serious momentum, although catching New England at this point is quite the uphill climb.

16. Cleveland Browns (5-3)

Say hello to one of the league's most intriguing teams.

Wins against New Orleans and Pittsburgh are great. A loss to Jacksonville? Not so much.

It is quite difficult to discern which Cleveland Browns team will show up on a weekly basis, but a strong rushing attack and decent play from veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer (10 touchdowns to four interceptions) ensures the team will hang around in the AFC North hunt.

15. Baltimore Ravens (5-4)

Here is perhaps the strangest note of all after nine weeks of action—the Baltimore Ravens rest in the cellar of the AFC North.

The Ravens were the latest victim of a suddenly potent Pittsburgh passing attack, but more concerning is the fact that the team dropped both divisional encounters with Cincinnati this season.

Baltimore is going to need a minor miracle to claw its way off the bottom of the pile and nab a playoff spot. A miserable pass defense that ranks in the bottom 10 will make the task quite difficult.

14. New Orleans Saints (4-4)

Just like that, the New Orleans Saints are once again serious contenders.

A one-point loss to Detroit in Week 7 was impressive given the quality of the competition, but Drew Brees and Co. did even better with a 44-23 win over Green Bay the week after. A 28-10 stomping of Carolina does not hurt, either.

The Saints tout one of the league's best run defenses and have stumped three elite quarterbacks in a row. Whatever has changed as of late has the Saints thinking playoffs and much more.

13. Seattle Seahawks (5-3)

The Seattle Seahawks have been as erratic as it gets this season, with wins over contenders such as Green Bay and Denver, but losses to pretenders such as St. Louis.

Still, quarterback Russell Wilson is confident his team will turn it around sooner rather than later, per the Seahawks on Twitter:

Considering the defending champs almost dropped a game to the winless Raiders at home last week, Wilson and Co. had better hope everything clicks into place in a hurry.

If not, Arizona is going to run away with the division.

12. Kansas City Chiefs (5-3)

Slowly but surely, the Kansas City Chiefs continue to emerge as serious contenders.

An elite ground game led by Jamaal Charles (435 yards, five scores) and Knile Davis (410 and four), not to mention the league's top pass defense, has seen the Chiefs get wins over tough opposition such as Miami, New England and San Diego.

A division crown is not out of the question so long as the team stays healthy.

11. Miami Dolphins (5-3)

Now would be a good time to start believing in the Miami Dolphins.

A top-five rushing attack led by Lamar Miller (518 yards and five scores) is great, but these Dolphins are contenders thanks to an elite defense, as Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel breaks down:

A shutout of Rivers and the aforementioned Chargers says all that really needs to be said about the Dolphins at this point.

10. Green Bay Packers (5-3)

The Green Bay Packers did what most do and took a loss in New Orleans back in Week 8, but the thing to remember about Aaron Rodgers and Co. is simple—the team's three losses have come in Seattle, Detroit and now New Orleans.

Sue them, right?

Rodgers predictably leads a top passing attack and is flanked by a top-10 pass defense. Should the Packers make a serious push and play a few playoff games at home, watch out.

9. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-3)

The rest of the league can only hope that whatever has clicked in Pittsburgh in recent weeks suddenly disappears.

Pittsburgh has won three straight games, but more importantly, the offense has scored a minimum of 43 points in its last two while Ben Roethlisberger totaled 12 passing touchdowns, an NFL record:

With the Steelers suddenly looking like The Greatest Show on Turf, the team's astronomical rise may only be helped in the coming weeks with matchups against the New York Jets and Tennessee.

8. Dallas Cowboys (6-3)

It is wildly difficult to knock the Dallas Cowboys too much for a pair of losses thanks to a back injury suffered by Tony Romo.

After all, the difference without Romo in the lineup, as illustrated by Fox Sports 1, is staggering:

Provided Romo is back to his normal self soon, the Cowboys and the league's No. 1 rushing attack, led by DeMarco Murray (1,133 yards and seven scores), are not going anywhere.

7. Cincinnati Bengals (5-2-1)

No A.J. Green? Mohamed Sanu steps up and plays like a No. 1 receiver. No Giovani Bernard? Jeremy Hill steps into the starting role and rushes for 154 yards and a pair of scores.

Such is life for one of the NFL's deepest rosters.

The only thing stopping the Cincinnati Bengals at this point is themselves. Case in point—blown coverages and sloppy tackling allowed the Jaguars to hang around in Week 9. Better teams will take advantage.

6. Indianapolis Colts (5-3)

The Indianapolis Colts caught the aforementioned Steelers at the wrong time in Week 8, but try to remember that the week before that was a 27-0 shellacking of the aforementioned Bengals.

What really sticks out about the Colts—other than having an MVP candidate under center and a top-15 rushing attack—is that the team played Denver and Philadelphia tough in the opening weeks of the season.

This is not like the old Colts that would score in bunches and be let down by its defense.

5. Denver Broncos (6-2)

It is quite difficult to grill the Denver Broncos for their two losses this season.

One came in Seattle against the defending champs, the other came on the road against New England.

Still, an elite passing attack and rush defense means little if the team continues to bumble around on the road against strong opposition. The team's only road win this season came against the Jets.

Until road woes are corrected, it is hard to rank the Broncos any higher.

4. Detroit Lions (6-2)

The Detroit Lions do everything but rush the ball well this season, although the team might rank better than 31st in that department if it actually put its mind to it.

Fans know that Matthew Stafford and an offense that continues to click despite injuries to Calvin Johnson and Reggie Bush make the Lions contenders.

What puts things over the top, though, is a top-five pass defense and the league's No. 2 overall rush defense. A more well-rounded team is quite difficult to find.

3. Philadelphia Eagles (6-2)

The Philadelphia Eagles have lost two games this season by a combined nine points, but they may have suffered the biggest loss of all in a Week 9 win over Houston thanks to an injury to quarterback Nick Foles, per Derrick Gunn of Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia:

In other words, Mark Sanchez will be the leader under center for an unknown amount of time.

Philadelphia is a very good team, but an offense with clipped wings heads into a stretch that includes Carolina, Green Bay, Dallas twice and Seattle over the course of the next six weeks.

2. Arizona Cardinals (7-1)

The Arizona Cardinals are serious Super Bowl contenders so long as Carson Palmer stays healthy.

Keep laughing, but since his return, the former USC star has thrown nine touchdowns to just two interceptions and continues to be backed by a top-five run defense and an explosive ground game led by Andre Ellington.

Right now, the NFC West runs through the desert.

1. New England Patriots (7-2)

The best teams annually find a way to compensate for issues, so it should come as no surprise that the New England Patriots are the top team in the land.

Details provided by Ben Volin of The Boston Globe put things into perspective:

The Patriots have now rattled off five consecutive wins, the most recent coming against Denver.

With Tom Brady slinging it at a high level and the defense showing well against the pass, the Patriots appear postseason-bound.
