Colt McCoy Will Limit Fantasy Value of DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon

Rob GoldbergOct 20, 2014

Colt McCoy has done enough to earn the job at starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins, but his limitations will hurt the weapons around him when it comes to fantasy football.

After taking over for the benched Kirk Cousins, McCoy had an impressive showing against the Tennessee Titans. The veteran completed 11 of his 12 attempts for 128 passing yards and a touchdown with no interceptions in a winning effort.

There was little surprise after the game when head coach Jay Gruden explained McCoy would be the starter for Week 8:

Of course, he did not rule out the possibility of Robert Griffin III returning to the field, although this seems doubtful based on Gruden's words:

This means McCoy will likely be the starter when the Redskins take on the Dallas Cowboys. Despite the quarterback's success the last time out, fans should not expect too much in Week 8.

In five years in the NFL, the former Texas star has made 21 starts at quarterback and has accumulated just a 6-15 record. He has a career quarterback rating of 76.1 and still has below-average arm strength that kept him from being a higher pick in the 2010 draft.

While he is an intelligent quarterback who often makes the right decision with the ball, he does not have the ability to make all the throws necessary for an NFL passer. Andy Benoit of Sports Illustrated noted how limited McCoy's passes were against the Titans:

Even the 70-yard touchdown to Pierre Garcon came on a short route, as Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan explained:

Take away this big play and McCoy would have averaged only 5.3 yards per attempt despite his high completion rate. Garcon could end up with more catches with this change at quarterback, but he would have to consistently make plays with the ball in his hands, which is not usually his strong suit.

Meanwhile, DeSean Jackson is certainly not a possession receiver, currently ranking second in the NFL with 20.3 yards per reception. He might find ways to get open down the field, but McCoy simply will not be able to get him the ball.

Instead, look for tight ends Jordan Reed and Niles Paul to get more looks on short-yardage plays throughout the upcoming game. Considering the Cowboys have already allowed seven touchdowns to tight ends this season, either one of them could have a big game Monday night.

Roy Helu could also be valuable thanks to his receiving ability out of the backfield.

Unfortunately, Garcon and Jackson will be limited by a quarterback who will mostly be making short passes all day long. Cousins might have made his mistakes, but at least he was willing to take a shot at the deep ball every so often.

Obviously, the Redskins are making the right call to help their team win, but your fantasy teams would be better off without him. Bench Garcon and Jackson and save yourself from a frustrating day of scoreboard watching.
