College Basketball Recruiting: High School Teams Loaded with Talent in 2014-15
The college basketball stars of tomorrow will come from all over the country. Coaches have scoured gyms looking for that next great player to add to their roster.
A lot of that recruiting is done on the AAU and travel ball circuit, which pretty much exists solely to showcase the top prospects in the nation. However, coaches could also simply focus on a handful of high school programs, ones that collectively seem to have the lion's share of the top talent from the recruiting classes of 2015 and beyond.
Here's a look at some high school teams that will be overflowing with college-level basketball players this upcoming season.
Bishop Gorman
1 of 6Location: Las Vegas
Top players: Nick Blair (2015), Zach Collins (2016), Chase Jeter (2015), Stephen Zimmerman (2015)
One of two Nevada schools on this list, Bishop Gorman's games will draw many a college recruiter this season thanks to the presence of three of the state's top seven seniors as well as a rising junior.
Leading the list is Chase Jeter, the No. 8 prospect in the current recruiting class. The 6'11", 225-pound power forward is already off the market, having committed to Duke in August, but he'll still be fun to watch during his final prep season.
Fellow senior Stephen Zimmerman, a 6'11" center, is rated 15th overall. He has visited Kansas, Kentucky and UCLA and has a November trip planned to Arizona. He also has one of the most social media-savvy parents around in stepmother Lori Zimmerman, also known as @VegasBballMom on Twitter.
Nick Blair, a 3-star small forward, has interest from Arizona State, while 4-star junior power forward Zach Collins has offers from nine schools including Arizona and UCLA.
Findlay Prep
2 of 6Location: Henderson, Nevada
Top players: O'Shae Brissett (2017), Justin Jackson (2016), Jayce Johnson (2016), Horace Spencer (2015), Derryck Thornton (2016), Allonzo Trier (2015)
Since forming in 2007, Findlay Prep has quickly risen up the ranks of the top high school basketball programs in the country. Though considered a "non-scholastic" institution by the NCAA, there's no doubt Findlay has become an assembly line for top college talent.
This year's team is no different, with a roster comprised of players from five states (though not Nevada) and two countries. Six of the Pilots' 10 players are ranked 82nd or better in their respective recruiting classes, including Allonzo Trier, a 5-star shooting guard from Maryland who has pledged to play at Arizona next season.
Its underclassmen include 5-star point guard Derryck Thornton, rated No. 7 in the 2016 class, UNLV commit Justin Jackson and 4-star sophomore forward O'Shae Brissett.
According to the school's website, Findlay Prep has already produced six NBA draft picks in its short history, most recently former Arizona shooting guard Nick Johnson.
Huntington Prep
3 of 6Location: Huntington, West Virginia
Top players: Miles Bridges (2016), Thomas Bryant (2015), Ted Kapita (2015)
Like most prep schools that excel at basketball, Huntington Prep's roster has players from all over. Its 2014-15 lineup is particularly international, with six of its 12 players hailing from outside the U.S. as well as one who is from Puerto Rico.
This is, after all, the school that served as Andrew Wiggins' final high school destination after moving there from Canada.
Thomas Bryant, a 6'9.5" forward from New York, is Huntington's most noteworthy player this season. The 4-star prospect, who has visited Indiana, Missouri and Syracuse, is No. 25 in the 2015 class. Fellow senior and 4-star power forward Ted Kapita, originally from the Congo, came to this school after playing last season at Florida Air Academy.
Miles Bridges, a 6'6" junior from Michigan, is rated 23rd overall and is the third-best small forward in the 2016 class.
Oak Hill Academy
4 of 6Location: Mouth of Wilson, Virginia
Top players: Dwayne Bacon (2015), Daniel Giddens (2015) Rodney Miller (2016), Josh Reaves (2015)
The gold standard of basketball "factories," Oak Hill Academy has been doing it longer than anyone else, and coach Steve Smith has been around running things for more than 30 years.
Located in a small town on the North Carolina-Virginia border, Oak Hill has produced 25 NBA draftees, according to its website. A few more could come from the current roster, which features four top-100 players led by Florida State commit Dwayne Bacon and future Ohio State star Daniel Giddens.
Bacon, a 6'6" guard listed as the 20th-best prospect in the 2015 class, picked the Seminoles in September but visited Tennessee earlier this month. Giddens, a 4-star center, picked OSU in July a few weeks before transferring to Oak Hill from Wheeler High School in Georgia.
Oak Hill's underclassmen are also talented, most notably 6'11" junior Rodney Miller. The 4-star center is getting looked at by Cincinnati and Georgetown.
Plano West
5 of 6Location: Plano, Texas
Top players: Tyler Davis (2015), Chris Giles (2017), D.J. Hogg (2015), Mickey Mitchell (2015)
In the massive state of Texas, the biggest schools play at the 6A level. With such large enrollments, it's common for some teams to sport more than one elite college-bound basketball player.
Plano West High School has four—three seniors that are heading to power-conference programs and a sophomore superstar who may be the best of the lot.
Teammates Tyler Davis and D.J. Hogg will continue playing alongside each other next season, as each has committed to play at Texas A&M. The 6'9" Davis, a 4-star center rated No. 33 overall, made his pledge in late August. Two weeks later, 6'8" power forward Hogg (the No. 31 prospect) joined him on the Aggies' commit list. Mickey Mitchell, a 4-star small forward, chose Ohio State in mid-September.
Sophomore Chris Giles is currently rated as the 33rd-best player in the 2017 recruiting class. The 6'3" shooting guard already has offers from Houston, Oklahoma State and SMU.
Roselle Catholic
6 of 6Location: Roselle, New Jersey
Top players: Isaiah Briscoe (2015), Asante Gist (2016), Chris Silva (2015)
Winners of back-to-back state titles, Roselle Catholic has played in New Jersey's Tournament of Champions in each of the previous two seasons. The Lions have done so thanks to a loaded lineup led by 5-star point guard Isaiah Briscoe.
The 6'3", 200-pound Briscoe, listed as the No. 9 overall player in the 2015 recruiting class, has visited Kentucky, Missouri and St. John's and is expected to choose from that trio soon.
He's not the only stud on Roselle Catholic, though. The 6'9" Chris Silva is a 4-star power forward who committed to South Carolina in September.
The Lions' junior class is led by Asante Gist, a 3-star point guard whose offers include Maryland and Seton Hall.
