Start 'Em, Sit 'Em Week 6: Analyzing Tricky Fantasy Football Lineup Decisions

Tim DanielsOct 9, 2014

Austin Davis is outscoring Tom Brady and Cam Newton. Matt Asiata ranks higher through five weeks than Jamaal Charles and LeSean McCoy.

These are the type of things that make fantasy football fun—the weekly guessing game to build a perfect lineup.

The challenge tends to get slightly easier as the season wears on. Roles become more defined, and trends emerge to help make those two or three toughest decisions.

But even as the season approaches the midway point, there's still no perfect strategy since the results are highly variable. Just because a certain player scored 20 points last week doesn't mean he can't score two this week. It's something to keep in mind when making those tricky fringe choices.

Let's check out some players who belong in that category for Week 6 and analyze if they belong in the lineup or on the bench.

Ben Roethlisberger is nothing more than a mid-range option with his value closely tied to the matchup. The good news for his fantasy owners this week is that he faces off with the Cleveland Browns. He put up 365 yards against the division rival in Week 1 and should thrive again.

Andre Williams was starting to take on a larger role in the New York Giants offense even before Rashad Jennings went down with a knee injury.

He had 15 carries the previous week. Now he'll just have less competition for touches against the 24th-ranked rush defense of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Michael Eisen of the team's official site passed along comments from the rookie running back, who says he's ready for the challenge.

"I prepare every week like I am going to play a full game," Williams said. "This week I am actually going to be able to play a full game, so I think up to this point I have prepared enough to start the next game and compete at the highest level."

Wes Welker is quickly working to regain his usual role for the Denver Broncos. He's made 13 catches in two games since returning from suspension. The only thing missing has been a trip to the end zone. Look for that short drought to end against the New York Jets, who rank 21st in points allowed.

Owen Daniels illustrates the weakness of the tight end position. He's averaging fewer than six points per game but still ranks 12th among tight ends.

With that said, the veteran has been seeing a steady diet of targets and should turn in a strong showing against the struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Tennessee Titans are not a recommended option virtually any other week. They showed why with a combined score of minus-nine over the past two games. Alas, any defense facing the Jacksonville Jaguars possesses sleeper appeal this season.

While certain teams' attempts to go young at kicker have failed, the Arizona Cardinals seem to have found a solid option in Chandler Catanzaro. The rookie is 11-of-11 on field goals through four games. He should see plenty of scoring chances against the Washington Redskins, who are giving up 27 points per game.

For fantasy owners without a settled quarterback situation, Davis is a solid waiver-wire option. He's scored 47 points over the past two games. It's too early to trust him against the San Francisco 49ers, however. They rate fourth against the pass and will control the game on the ground.

Stevan Ridley is quickly becoming one of fantasy's most frustrating players. He's had two nice games, but they have been surrounded by total clunkers.

That's why he should be on the bench as he faces the second-ranked Buffalo Bills run defense despite scoring 17 points last week.

Speaking of frustrating, Michael Crabtree falls in the same category. While he's been inconsistent throughout his career, he showed encouraging signs in back-to-back 14-point outings. He only tallied five points in the two games that followed, however, and can't be trusted until his role increases.

Jordan Cameron has played three games and secured just six catches. That's certainly not what fantasy owners were expecting when they used a mid-round pick on him. He should be left on the bench until he shows significant signs of getting back on track.

Marc Sessler of NFL.com notes the Browns are still scoring at a solid clip, which suggests they won't change their approach just to get him more looks:

The Houston Texans are basically the opposite of the previously mentioned Titans. They are a reliable choice most weeks, ranking sixth among defenses so far, but should be avoided this week as they attempt to slow down Andrew Luck and Co.

Nick Folk is coming off a dreaded zero in Week 5. When it comes to kickers, avoiding that type of outing is more important than scoring big.

Avoid him in a game where the Jets will need touchdowns rather than field goals against the Broncos.
