Ryder Cup 2014: Twitter Reacts to Final Standings and Results for USA vs. Europe
The chance of the United States coming back during singles play was always a long shot. On Sunday Europe showed why, wrapping things up with four matches still unfinished and ultimately winning by a 16.5-11.5 margin.
It was Jamie Donaldson's 4 and 3 victory over Keegan Bradley that would clinch it. PGA Tour on Twitter shared the following after Europe clinched the title:
As Paul Hayward of The Telegraph noted, it was business as usual for the Europeans:
Heck, even former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson weighed in on the performance, per Hayward:
Here's a look at all of the day's results:
McIlroy was the first player to earn a win on the day, absolutely dominating the talented Rickie Fowler, 5 and 4, after winning five of the first six holes and holding on from there. Here he is speaking to Steve Sands of the Golf Channel after the match:
As Jason Sobel of the Golf Channel noted, McIlroy may be having an epic year but it was another player who arguably was Europe's most important player during this tournament:
Tom Watson, of course, was the captain for the United States in this year's Ryder Cup.
And Justin Rose was indeed spectacular throughout the tournament and saved one big moment for the end, as he managed to erase a lead that Hunter Mahan had held throughout much of their match to halve the points on the very last hole.
While a win from Mahan wouldn't have made a difference—Jamie Donaldson's win shortly after would have clinched the victory for Europe even if Mahan hadn't halved and instead won—his reaction after blowing a late lead left a bad taste in the mouths of some United States fans.
Ashley Mayo of Golf Digest was one of them:
Of course, while Europe would go on to win the tournament, the biggest (or at least the most fun) story of the day came from Patrick Reed, who beat Henrik Stenson by one hole and shushed the European crowd along the way, per The Telegraph Sport on Twitter:
Like him or loathe him, Reed brought the right attitude to the Ryder Cup. Trey Wingo of ESPN certainly thought he was a great addition to the Americans:
He certainly came up big for the team, per Justin Ray of the Golf Channel:
"Patrick Reed: 1st US rookie to win 3+ matches & lose 0 since 1995 (Phil Mickelson)
— Justin Ray (@JustinRayGC) September 28, 2014"
While Reed was excellent throughout, Phil Mickelson had his struggles throughout the tournament. While he probably wishes he had played stronger throughout he certainly finished with a bang, defeating Stephen Gallacher 3 and 1.
It was a dominating display and one that Shane Bacon of Back9Network's The Turn put into perspective:
On his best day, Lefty is still as formidable as they come. Unfortunately, his best came a little late for the United States.
