British Sports Therapist Sets Record by Running 53 Marathons in 53 Days
Most people would have a hard time training for just one marathon, so thinking about what British sports therapist Amy Hughes accomplished over the past two months is mind-blowing.
According to BBC.com, the 26-year-old ran a marathon on a daily basis from Aug. 6 to Sept. 27. That means she ran 26.2 miles each day for 53 straight days. If you do the math, she ran a total of 1,389 miles in less than two months. Some people don't even drive that much during a 53-day span.
The feat is even more impressive considering Hughes battled a stomach bug—which caused her to vomit—last week. Fatigue had to make running the final marathons tough, so getting ill near the end of the journey couldn't have helped.
Fans can see which cities she ran marathons in by checking out her website. As she knocked out marathons one by one, she used the @53Marathons Twitter account to update her followers on her progress.
Hughes set some records along the way. Not only did she shatter the women's record for most consecutive days of running a marathon (17), but she also topped the men's record (52).
Some may wonder why she decided to run so many marathons. She set out to raise exercise awareness and to raise money for the Isabelle Lottie Foundation.
The sports therapist talked about what started her record-setting journey.
"I was inspired by Larry Macon who ran across the states," Hughes said, per BBC.com. "I didn't really start by wanting to break a record, I just looked at a map of the major cities in the U.K. and wanting to run in them."
She may not have set out to break records, but she now finds herself in the record books because of her amazing accomplishment.
