The Merseyside derby is always a thrilling affair, but rarely have the city of Liverpool's teams been so attack-minded, yet vulnerable defensively.
There are ample goals in both thanks to the presence of forward players such as Raheem Sterling and Romelu Lukaku. But this particular derby will probably hinge on which defence isn't a liability.

Speaking of defensive nous, one member of Liverpool's back line certain to be under scrutiny is goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. The Belgian stopper was highly capable during his days at Sunderland, but a reckless streak has crept into his game since he made the move to Anfield last summer.

Liverpool Echo reporter James Pearce explicitly described the pressure Mignolet is under this season:
"His place in this Liverpool side is under scrutiny like never before and those who doubt his long-term suitability for the No 1 shirt are having a field day.
The Reds’ interest in free agent Victor Valdes, who is a month away from fitness following a cruciate ligament injury, has undoubtedly cranked up the pressure on Mignolet. A three-time Champions League winner and Spain international wouldn’t be lured to Anfield by the prospect of being a deputy to anyone.
Mignolet has a battle on his hands and tomorrow's visit of Everton would be the perfect time to start silencing the doubters.
"
It won't help that Mignolet will face an Everton squad amply stocked with forwards who can cause plenty of problems. Obviously, Lukaku remains the focal point of manager Roberto Martinez's attack.
His bullish power, lightning pace and excellent technique make him a threat to trouble any defence. But the defenders in front of Mignolet can't make the mistake of focusing too much on the dynamic 21-year-old.
That's just how crafty link player Steven Naismith usually gets free. The clever ex-Rangers man has netted three times already for the Toffees this season, per WhoScored.com.

His guile combines well with the direct quickness of Lukaku's fellow Belgium international Kevin Mirallas. Mignolet will certainly need to turn the clock back to his Sunderland days to help Liverpool repel Everton's attack.
Of course, Anfield chief Brendan Rodgers may opt for attack as the best form of defence for his forward-thinking team. With Sterling and Mario Balotelli up front, that's probably a wise policy.
Prediction
Both teams have stuttered through the early stages of the new season.
A derby win can be the perfect tonic and an excellent platform for building some genuine momentum.
At the moment, Liverpool look a little more jaded. However, the Reds rarely give Everton anything at Anfield.
Expect a high-scoring tilt to tip Liverpool's way late on.
