La Liga Results 2014 Week 6: Tracking Final Scores, Top Scorers for Matchday 6

James DudkoSep 26, 2014

Valencia began Week 6 of the La Liga season perched at the top of the table, level on points with Luis Enrique's impressive FC Barcelona team. The team Enrique left behind, Celta Vigo, began the Week 6 fixtures with a tricky looking trip to Elche.

It look a late goal from former Benfica striker Nolito to earn Celta a 1-0 win. The vital three points moves manager Eduardo Berizzo's plucky team up to within a point of the top three, at least for the moment.

Here's a breakdown of the fixture list, along with an updated list of La Liga's top scorers following the Week 6 results:

Sunday Recap

While Saturday's fixtures may have been open affairs flush with goals, Sunday proceedings made for a much tighter storyline as only one of the four results ended with more than one goal.

That came thanks to a 1-1 draw in San Sebastian, where Real Sociedad fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against unbeaten Valencia.

Sergio Canales struck in the 36th minute to redeem La Real for the early opener scored by Los Che's Carles Gil, WhoScored.com telling us just how long the midfielder was made to wait for his score:

Almeria and Getafe had better fortunes earlier in the day, however, beating Deportivo La Coruna and Malaga, respectively, each with a 1-0 scoreline.

Michel scored for hosts Getafe, and Malaga's day went from bad to worse when defender Weligton picked up two yellow cards in the last three minutes of the game, although ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan says the dismissal was harsh:

Almeria took their three points through a 90th-minute winner from Edgar, leading to Depor's third consecutive defeat and extending their winless La Liga run at home to four.

The day's last fixture came with Cordoba and Espanyol seeing out a 0-0 stalemate at the Estadio Nuevo Arcangel, the hosts still yet to win a game this season.

The result was especially disappointing for the hosts as it would have been considered a prime opportunity to really get their campaign started, coming close with a disallowed goal late on.

It leaves the Caliphs one point off the pace at the foot of the table while Barca head into a Champions League week with a two-point cushion at the summit, second=placed Atletico Madrid stuck to the Blaugrana's coat-tails.

Saturday Recap

Barcelona and Real Madrid both took care of business on Saturday, recording easy wins over Granada and Villarreal, respectively.

The Blaugrana put six goals past Granada, three coming from Brazilian superstar Neymar. His effort was overshadowed by Lionel Messi, who scored his 400th career goal, as shared by Bleacher Report UK:

He added one more in the second half, for good measure, while Ivan Rakitic also scored for the Catalans, who took sole possession of the top spot in the La Liga standings with the win.

As shared by ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan, manager Luis Enrique showed his knowledge of basketball when he compared Messi to the legendary Wilt Chamberlain:

Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric scored for Los Blancos, who recorded a routine 2-0 win at Villarreal. Ronaldo's scoring form in recent weeks has been sensational, prompting former England international Gary Lineker to tweet his disappointment the Portuguese star scored "only once:"

He comfortably remains at the top of the top scorer's list, with an incredible 10 goals in just six matches.

Defending champions Atletico Madrid had little difficulty dispatching of Sevilla, as Koke, Saul Niguez, Raul Garcia and and Raul Jimenez all found the back of the net.

Sevilla had little chance in their first defeat of the new campaign, scarcely finding any chances at the Vicente Calderon in Diego Simeone's first match back on the touchline following his suspension.

Leo Baptistao scored twice in the first half as Rayo Vallecano recorded a 2-0 win over Levante, while Eibar and Athletic Bilbao failed to score in their fixture.

Celta's win owed much to their attacking endeavour. Berizzo has allowed his team to be open and bullish in the search for goals.

It's a smart policy when considering the forward riches at his disposal. Nolito is part of a front-line three that is causing havoc so far this season, as figures from Opta Jose have detailed:

Had it not been for Orellana's profligacy, Celta would've won this game by a much more favourable scoreline. In the end, it was left to Noltio, the clever and pacy left-sided attacker, to slot home the clutch winner.

The goal is simply more evidence of Nolito's growing significance in Berizzo's team:

It's also enough to move him ahead of players such as Barca star Lionel Messi in the current scoring charts. Berizzo will be more pleased to be in contention the big boys at the top of the league rankings.

A stern test awaits Valencia, in the form of a trip to Real Sociedad, a side that can be deadly on its day.

Enrique will fancy his chances of claiming top spot with his team at home to Granada. Barca's opponents surprisingly enter this game in eighth place but are still likely to come up short at the Camp Nou.

In particular, star forwards Lionel Messi and Neymar will hope to close the gap on Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Real Madrid's free-scoring talisman will likely continue his run at the Madrigal.

An outside candidate to watch in the race for the Pichichi is Sevilla's deadly ace Carlos Bacca. The tricky Colombian can cause problems even for Atletico's notoriously stubborn defence.
