Overview
Having won both of their qualifiers so far, Northern Districts have one foot in the main Champions League draw. With a very good net run rate, even a loss against Mumbai Indians should edge them through.
Mumbai face a tougher task. Having lost their opener, they bounced back with a big win over Southern Express, the weakest team of the group. Express play Lahore Lions prior to Mumbai’s match, and the Indian team will know before they begin their charge against Northern Districts exactly what they have to do in order to progress.
A win for Lahore over Southern Express will mean Mumbai have a must-win fixture on their hands. Whereas if Lahore lose, Mumbai will definitely progress with a win and will most likely go through if they lose, provided their net run rate doesn't change too dramatically.
Mumbai have blown hot and cold throughout the qualifiers, while Northern Districts have looked like a really balanced side.
A win will go a long way in helping boost their momentum before their first match in the Champions League group stages. Tim Southee and Trent Boult have forged a sublime bowling partnership, something Boult relishes. In an interview with CLT20.com, he talked about the importance of bowling in pairs:
"I enjoy bowling with him. I have known him for a lot of years now, we have grown up together and played age-group cricket together and I have learnt a lot from him.
It [bowling in pairs] is an important thing in all formats. We both are pretty young in our careers and hopefully we have a lot more to come in the future. As a pair, we just go about keeping things simple. We try our best to put the ball in the right spot and hope for success from there.
"
If Boult and Southee can replicate some of their performances from their first two games, they should be in a good position to seal their progress to the next round with an unbeaten run.
Key players
Northern Districts
Trent Boult has picked up four wickets in his two games and has a solid economy rate of 4.00. Mumbai's biggest weakness is in their middle order, and the ability to strike up front with their new ball pair of Boult and Southee will be a big advantage.
Mumbai Indians
Mike Hussey had a good knock in his last outing, scoring 60 off just 40 balls. The ability to get runs at the top of the order to sheltered the inexperienced middle order will be Mumbai's biggest challenge.
