Salvatore Sirigu and PSG Agree on New 3-Year Contract

Salvatore Sirigu and Paris Saint-German have agreed to a new three-year contract that will keep the Italian goalkeeper at the club until 2018. The club's official website reported the news Wednesday.

The Italy international has been a key component of Les Parisiens' steady rise to the top of European football, and he shared his delight at the continued faith the club has put in his abilities:

"I wanted to continue this incredible adventure, both on a sporting and on a human level, with Paris Saint-Germain," he said. "I know we are only at the start of something exceptional. We are going to win a lot of titles together."

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi commented on the performances of Sirigu, who has established himself as one of Europe's most reliable stoppers:

"We are very proud to extend the contract of Salvatore, an exceptional goalkeeper and a remarkable human being," Al-Khelaifi said. "He is a symbol of the Paris Saint-Germain project: to build one of the most successful clubs in Europe."

Sirigu honed his craft in Italy with Palermo and was one of PSG's first acquisitions following the financial takeover by Qatar Sports Investments. Perennially stuck on the Azzurri bench behind Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon, the 27-year-old remains one of the most underrated stoppers on an international level.

Bleacher Report UK's Andrew Gibney believes the French champions are doing the right thing by rewarding their current No. 1 with a contract extension:

Goal's Robin Bairner agrees:

PSG were linked with a transfer move for Chelsea's Petr Cech, as reported by the Daily Mail's Rob Draper, but followers of French football immediately discredited the reports as nothing but rumours.

Sirigu has been a steady presence in goal for PSG, and while he may not sell as many shirts as Cech or Buffon, Les Bleus would have been foolish to pull their proven starter for a veteran whose play will start to decline in the coming years.

At just 27 years of age, Sirigu could realistically continue on his current level for the next eight years. He's the favourite to take over the starting position in the Italian XI once Buffon retires, and with talents like Simone Scuffet, Nicola Leali and Mattia Perin coming through the ranks for the Azzurri, it's a testament to his abilities.

His main focus will be on his club career, however, as PSG attempt to finally make their mark on the highest stage, the UEFA Champions League.

The French champions once again had a productive summer transfer window, and with their longtime starter in goal now locked up to a new deal, the hunt for European silverware can truly start.
