Adrian Chiles' Sprinkler Attack and the 10 Funniest Football Reporting Moments

Ryan BaileySep 9, 2014

Before England's Euro 2016 qualifier victory over Switzerland kicked off on Monday night, ITV viewers were treated to the spectacle of Adrian Chiles, Glenn Hoddle, Ian Wright and Lee Dixon getting a soaking from a powerful sprinkler at Basel's St Jakob-Park stadium.

Quite how no one predicted that the outdoor studio was in range of the icy blast is anyone's guess, but it made for one of the most amusing parts of the evening.

The rogue Swiss sprinkler inspires this list of 10 brilliant moments from football reporting...

Harry Redknapp Doesn't Enjoy Being Hit by a Football

Warning: Clip contains NSFW language

Most funny reporting moments involving Harry Redknapp surround interviews through car windows or someone calling him a "w****** d*****."

However, his greatest on-camera moment is surely the training ground interview at Portsmouth when a player accidentally struck him with the ball.

Redknapp is rendered unable to concentrate on the questioning and utters the immortal line "No wonder you're in the f***ing reserves!"

To his credit, Redknapp has always declined to name the player in question.

Nick Collins Suffers a Step Ladder Malfunction

2 of 10

Prior to England's friendly clash with Scotland in August 2013, Sky Sports News reporter Nick Collins filed a report from outside Wembley.

It soon transpired that Mr Collins was standing on a step ladder in order to get a decent shot of the stadium, as he lost balance and tumbled to the ground live on air.

Jim White in the studio seemed as bemused as the viewers.

Cristiano Ronaldo Interviews Cristiano Ronaldo

3 of 10

Not only is Cristiano Ronaldo one of the greatest players the game has ever seen and a true professional, but he clearly has a decent sense of humour.

Prior to the 2009 Champions League final in Rome, the Portuguese megastar interviewed himself—and he wasn't afraid of asking the tough questions.

He even managed to catch himself out with a lie: In the clip, Ronaldo insists that he would be staying at Manchester United, but a few weeks later, he made the move to Real Madrid.

This wasn't his first experience with being a "top journalist," as he interviewed Anderson when United won the league a few days earlier.

Sky Germany's Jessica Kastrop Hit on the Head During Game Build-Up

4 of 10

The perils of a pitch-side pre-match set-up should have been abundantly clear to Chiles and Co.

In the lead-up to a Bundesliga match between Mainz and Stuttgart in 2010, Sky Sport Germany presenter Jessica Kastrop was the unwitting recipient of a wayward long ball from Khalid Boulahrouz.

That kind of form is probably why Chelsea let the Dutchman go in 2008.

Jessica Kastrop's Pitch-Side Deja Vu

5 of 10

They say lightning doesn't strike twice, but try telling that to Jessica Kastrop.

In March 2014, four years after being struck on the back of the head on the side of the pitch, the exact same thing happened again. This time, it was a rogue pass from Leverkusen's Philipp Wollenberg in the warm-up for a match against Hoffenheim.

MLS Reporter Kelli Tennant Has a Jessica Kastrop Moment

6 of 10

This is fast turning into a list of reporters being hit on the back of the head, but here's one more for good measure.

In the build-up to Vancouver's MLS match with Los Angeles in April 2014, reporter Kelli Tennant was hit from behind. Amazingly, Tennant barely even broke her sentence and carried on as if it was a very minor nuisance. What a pro.

Afterwards, she saw the funny side of the incident.

Chris Kamara Misses the Action

7 of 10

There are lengthy reels of Chris Kamara's funniest moments as a Soccer Saturday correspondent, but his finest hour came in April 2010 when covering a match between his old club Portsmouth and Blackburn.

Kamara had failed to notice that Pompey's Anthony Vanden Borre had earned a second yellow card—cue hilarity.

Neil Lennon Takes Some Calls

8 of 10

Here's a tip for budding journalists: If you are ever using your phone to record a press conference, set it to airplane mode so your subject doesn't feel the temptation to answer the call.

That's exactly what former Celtic manager Neil Lennon did to Scottish journo Michael Grant in January 2013 when his wife's calls interrupted proceedings.

Ian Holloway's 'Pulling' Analogy

9 of 10

Ian Holloway has contributed so much to the canon of hilarious interview responses, but the current Millwall manager's "pulling" analogy from his time at Queens Park Rangers certainly takes some beating.

David Luiz Agrees with Everything

10 of 10

David Luiz is a part-time defensive midfielder and very occasional defender who appears to divert most of his time and energy to making people laugh.

The Paris Saint-Germain star clearly doesn't take life too seriously, as shown in an interview during his formative days at Chelsea when he didn't speak English very well. His attempts to steal the limelight reach fever pitch when he starts stroking Frank Lampard's face.
